"Eating the cats ft. Donald Trump (Debate Remix)" is a parody song by The Kiffness, also known as David Scott, a South African born musician. [1] [2] The song samples Donald Trump's claim, during the United States presidential debate on 10th September 2024, that Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, were eating residents' pets. [3] The song pokes fun at the President's claims with a refrain "people of Springfield, don't eat my cat". [4]
Referring to the reasons behind the song, The Kiffness states that "music has a way of taking away negative energy and polarising feelings, especially with someone like Donald Trump". [5] He said there is a "vested interest" in American politics because of its impact on his home country, South Africa. [6]
The song has been streamed and watched over 9 million times on YouTube and has been viewed more than 1 million times on X (formerly known as Twitter) within 24 hours of its posting. [7] [8] Scott pledges to donate all proceeds to the Clark County SPCA Springfield, Ohio with over $20,000 raised already. [9] On September 18, The Kiffness performed "Eating the cats" live in Munich, cementing the popularity of the song. [10]
The lyrics of the song begin with Trump saying "they are eating the dogs, they are eating the cats, they are eating the pets of the people that live there". [11] The singer then chimes in with the verse calling out "people of Springfield" and commenting, "why would you do that?" and "eat something else", offering bread, carrots and eggs as alternatives. [12]

Multiple songs, albums, bands and performances have referenced Donald Trump or his various brands, including Trump Tower, his TV show, his hotel chain, and his casinos. While recent songs refer to Trump's campaign, election, and tenure as President of the United States, more than 200 songs refer to Trump prior to his campaigns for president. Most earlier references to Trump in lyrics revolve around his status as a business tycoon, but then shifted toward a stance more critical of his politics as he attempted to attain public office. With his victory in the 2016 presidential election, Trump's prominence in hip-hop music has been likened to that of Ronald Reagan's in hardcore punk during the 1980s.

Starting in September 2024, baseless claims spread online that Haitian immigrants were stealing and eating pets in Springfield, Ohio. The claims began with a local Facebook group post claiming a local cat had been butchered, and spread quickly among far-right and neo-Nazi groups. The claims were then amplified by prominent figures in the American right, most notably Republican Senator and vice-presidential nominee, JD Vance of Ohio, followed by his running mate Donald Trump and allies such as Laura Loomer and Twitter owner Elon Musk. Subsequently, the author of the original Facebook post and the neighbor who told her the story admitted it was based on a rumor from people with whom they had not spoken.
