College of Engineering Cherthala

College of Engineering Cherthala [1] is affiliated to APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University (KTU) and Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT), The college is approved by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). It is one of the leading technical institutions in Kerala. It opened in 2004. CEC has established excellence in the field of science and technology. CEC offers bachelor and master engineering courses in electronics, computer science, and electrical engineering.

Nair Service Society College

NSS College, Cherthala, was founded by the Nair Service Society, led by the late Mannathu Padmanabhan.

This institution began as a Junior College in 1964. It was upgraded in 1968. Its first PG course was started in 1995.

The college has an active NCC Unit, three socially committed National Service Scheme Units and a sports and arts wing. Students won laurels in University examinations, youth festivals and athletic contests.

It offers Bachelor of Arts (English, Malayalam, History and Economics), Bachelor of Science (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Botany and Environment & Water Management), Master of Arts (Economics), Bachelor of Commerce and Master of Science in mathematics. The college is affiliated to Kerala University. [2]

Sree Narayana College

SN College [3] It was inaugurated in 1964 by the late Sri. R. Sankar, the founder-secretary of S.N. Trusts and then Chief Minister of Kerala. It began as a junior college and evolved into a full college, offering ten degree courses and two PG courses.

The college enrolls more than 2,500 students served by more than 90 faculty. Four NSS units are active in the college. A Population Education Club and a Women's Cell operate there. The NCC wing has had its cadets participate in Republic Day Parade. College sports teams have excelled, especially in Kabaddi and Kho-Kho.

Its degree courses are Bachelor of Arts (Malayalam, Politics, Philosophy, History and Economics), Bachelor of Science (Computer Science, Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology and Geology), Master of Arts (Economics), Bachelor of Commerce and Master of Science (Botany, Zoology, Physics). St. Michael's college enrolls 1,700 students with 62 members on the teaching staff and 47 on the non-teaching staff. [5]

The importance and antiquity of education in Kerala are underscored by the state's ranking as among the most literate in the country. The educational transformation of Kerala was triggered by the efforts of the Church Mission Society missionaries, who were the pioneers that promoted mass education in Kerala, in the early decades of the 19th century. The local dynastic precursors of modern-day Kerala—primarily the Travancore Royal Family, the Nair Service Society, Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana Yogam and Muslim Educational Society (MES)—also made significant contribution to the progress on education in Kerala. Local schools were known by the general word kalaris, some of which taught martial arts, but other village schools run by Ezhuthachans were for imparting general education. Christian missionaries and British rule brought the modern school education system to Kerala. Ezhuthu palli was the name used in earlier times. The word was derived from the schools run by the Buddhist monasteries. For centuries villages used to set up an ezhuthupally or ashan pallikoodam with one or two teachers. Students used to go this school from nearby areas and learn languages, literature, mathematics, grammar etc. After completing this students may continue study about specific subjects such as ayurveda, astrology, accounting etc. Censuses during 1800 shows that Travancore, Cochin, Kannur areas have many such schools. Even name list of ashans were used to be published along with the census.

The first college in Kerala state and the second established under British rule in India was the C.M.S. College (1840). Mahatma Gandhi University is located in Kottayam district.


The town has a number of secondary, and higher secondary educational institutions, plus a number of Polytechnics, and Engineering Colleges in the vicinity. The Govt. HSS in the town is one of the oldest schools in the entire state. It was established long before in the 1890s. It has churned out a number of proficient people, who have excelled in every field.
