Cerro El Melao [2] [3] is the highest peak of the Sierra de Velasco in the Sierras Pampeanas range. It is located in the La Rioja Province of Argentina, about 70 km north-west of the provincial capital, La Rioja.
El Melao has an elevation of 4,157 metres (13,638 ft) above sea level. Despite its relatively low altitude, with 2,904 metres (9,528 ft) it is one of Argentina's most prominent peaks. [2] Other sources mention an altitude of 4,189 metres (13,743 ft). [3]
Catamarca is a province of Argentina, located in the northwest of the country. The province had a population of 429,556 as per the 2022 census [INDEC], and covers an area of 102,602 km2. Its literacy rate is 95.5%. Neighbouring provinces are : Salta, Tucumán, Santiago del Estero, Córdoba, and La Rioja. To the west it borders the country of Chile.
La Rioja, officially Province of La Rioja is a province of Argentina located in the west of the country. The landscape of the province consist of a series of arid to semi-arid mountain ranges and agricultural valleys in between. It is in one of these valleys that the capital of the province, the city of La Rioja, lies. Neighboring provinces are, from the north clockwise, Catamarca, Córdoba, San Luis and San Juan. The Triassic sauropodomorph dinosaur Riojasaurus is named after the province.
Sierra Nevada, also known as Sierra Nevada de Lagunas Bravas, is a major ignimbrite-lava dome complex which lies in both Chile and Argentina in one of the most remote parts of the Central Andes.
Roque de los Muchachos is a rocky mound at the highest point on the island of La Palma in the Canary Islands, Spain. The rocks are found at an elevation of 2,426 metres (7,959 ft) above sea level, not far from the Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos, where some of the world's largest telescopes are situated; the altitude and the dryness of the climate here give rise to excellent observing conditions. The rocks are contained with the Parque Nacional de la Caldera de Taburiente.
Acotango is the central and highest of a group of stratovolcanoes straddling the border of Bolivia and Chile. It is 6,052 metres (19,856 ft) high. The group is known as Kimsa Chata and consists of three mountains: Acotango, Umurata north of it and Capurata south of it.
Aracar is a large conical stratovolcano in northwestern Argentina, just east of the Chilean border. It has a main summit crater about 1–1.5 kilometres (0.6–0.9 mi) in diameter which sometimes contains crater lakes, and a secondary crater. The volcano has formed, starting during the Pliocene, on top of a lava platform and an older basement. Constructed on a base with an altitude of 4,100 metres (13,500 ft), it covers a surface area of 192.4 square kilometres (74.3 sq mi) and has a volume of 148 cubic kilometres (36 cu mi). The only observed volcanic activity was a possible steam or ash plume on March 28, 1993, seen from the village of Tolar Grande about 50 km (31 mi) southeast of the volcano, but with no evidence of deformation of the volcano from satellite observations. Inca archeological sites are found on the volcano.
Risco Plateado is a stratovolcano in Argentina, with an elevation of 4,999 metres (16,401 ft) above sea level. With a prominence of 1,602 metres (5,256 ft), it is one of the many ultra prominent peaks in the Andes. The equilibrium line altitude of the volcano lies at an altitude of 3,800 metres (12,500 ft).
Riojasaurus was a herbivorous sauropodomorph dinosaur named after La Rioja Province in Argentina where it was found in the Los Colorados Formation in the Ischigualasto-Villa Unión Basin by José Bonaparte. It lived during the Late Triassic and grew to about 6.6 metres (22 ft) long. Riojasaurus is the only known riojasaurid to live in South America.
La Malinche, also known as Matlalcueye or Malintzin, is an inactive volcano located in the states of Tlaxcala and Puebla in Mexico. Officially, its summit reaches 4,461 metres (14,636 ft) above sea level, though it is generally considered to be closer to 4,440 metres (14,567 ft), using GPS measurements. It is the highest peak in Tlaxcala, the fifth-highest in Puebla, the sixth-highest in Mexico, the 23rd-highest in North America, and the 252nd-highest in the world. Its height above nearby cities varies from 1,908 metres (6,260 ft) above Huamantla, 2,461 metres (8,074 ft) above Villa Vicente Guerrero, 2,221 metres (7,287 ft) above Tlaxcala, to 2,299 metres (7,543 ft) above Puebla. The summit is 22.4 kilometres (13.9 mi) from Tlaxcala, 28.3 kilometres (17.6 mi) from Puebla, and 118 kilometres (73 mi) from Mexico City. The climate is cold near the summit and mild on the lower slopes.
Monte Pissis is an extinct volcano on the border of the La Rioja and Catamarca provinces in Argentina, 25 km (16 mi) to the east of the Chilean border and about 550 km (340 mi) north of Aconcagua. The mountain is the third-highest in the Western Hemisphere. Monte Pissis is named after Pedro José Amadeo Pissis, a French geologist who worked for the Chilean government. Due to its location in the Atacama Desert, the mountain has very dry conditions but features an extensive glacier, with crevasses, which is unique in the region. The peak is the highest summit on Earth without a permanent glacier.
Sarektjåkkå is the second highest mountain in Sweden and the highest mountain in the Laponian area at 2,089 metres (6,854 ft) AMSL. The mountain is located close to the eastern border of Sarek National Park, about 23 kilometres (14 mi) southwest of Suorva.
An ultra-prominent peak, or ultra for short, is a mountain summit with a topographic prominence of 1,500 metres (4,900 ft) or more; it is also called a P1500. The prominence of a peak is the minimum height of climb to the summit on any route from a higher peak, or from sea level if there is no higher peak. There are approximately 1,524 such peaks on Earth. Some well-known peaks, such as the Matterhorn and Eiger, are not ultras because they are connected to higher mountains by high cols and thus do not achieve enough topographic prominence.
The Abaucán is a river in Argentina which flows through the provinces of Catamarca and La Rioja, areas with very low precipitation. The river water is provided by the ingress of two larger rivers, the Fiambalá and the Chaschuil.
Palpana is a volcano in the Andes of Chile. It has a summit elevation of 6,040 metres (19,820 ft).
Sierra de Velasco is a mountain range in the Argentine province of La Rioja. Sierra de Velasco runs from north to south just west of the city of La Rioja and east of Chilecito.
La Mira is a peak of the Sierra de Gredos range in central Spain. It is located in the central part of the Sierra de Gredos range, a subrange of the larger Sistema Central, in the autonomous community of Castile and León. Listed at 2,343 metres (7,687 ft), it marks the common boundary of Arenas de San Pedro, Guisando, El Hornillo and Hoyos del Espino municipalities.
Los Llanos Formation is a geological formation in the La Rioja Province, northwestern Argentina whose strata date back to the Campanian stage of the Late Cretaceous.
