Elizabeth Hughes (March 19,1875 - March 15,1941 [1] ) was an American educator and politician who was one of the four women first elected in 1918 to the California Legislature to serve in the 1919 session of the California State Assembly. She was a Republican Party [2]
Elizabeth was married to James B. Hughes. They resided in Butte County,California where her husband was the principal of Oroville High School,and she taught school. [2]
In 1918 Elizabeth Hughes,along with Esto Bates Broughton,Grace S. Dorris,and Anna L. Saylor,was elected to serve in the 1919 California State Assembly. [3] [4] Hughes was chairwoman of the House Education Committee. [2]
Amasa Leland Stanford was an American industrialist and politician. A member of the Republican Party,he served as the 8th governor of California from 1862 to 1863 and represented California in the United States Senate from 1885 until his death in 1893. He and his wife Jane were also the founders of Stanford University,which they named after their late son.
