Consular representation in the region started in 1929 when the U.S. had a presence in the former colony of French Somaliland. [4] In April 1977, the United States established a consulate general in Djibouti. On June 27, 1977, the United States recognized the Republic of Djibouti following its independence from France, and the American Consulate General in the former French Territory of Afars and Issas was elevated to the status of an American Embassy. Walter S. Clarke took the position as Chargé d'Affaires ad interim. [5] The first ambassador, Jerrold M. North, was appointed on September 26, 1980.
The Djiboutian government has been a supportive partner of U.S. interests, particularly in countering violent extremism and in hosting the only enduring U.S. military presence in Africa at Camp Lemonnier, which was formalized by agreement in 2003. The strategic location of Djibouti is critical not only for military and security purposes but also for transportation and economic functions within the region. [4] [6]
