There are 50 passenger ferry quays in İstanbul, of which 37 are in active service in Bosphorus, Golden Horn and the Sea of Marmara. [1] As of the 2017 Summer season, the ferry quays are served at 600 voyages daily by 28 traditional passenger ferry boats on 17 lines operated by the Şehir Hatları ("City Lines") company. [2]

The Sea of Marmara, also known as the Sea of Marmora or the Marmara Sea, and in the context of classical antiquity as the Propontis is the inland sea, entirely within the borders of Turkey, that connects the Black Sea to the Aegean Sea, thus separating Turkey's Asian and European parts. The Bosphorus strait connects it to the Black Sea and the Dardanelles strait to the Aegean Sea. The former also separates Istanbul into its Asian and European sides. The Sea of Marmara is a small sea with an area of 11,350 km2 (4,380 sq mi), and dimensions 280 km × 80 km. Its greatest depth is 1,370 m (4,490 ft).

Ferries in Istanbul

The city of Istanbul is at a geographic crossroads, straddling Europe and Asia Minor, and is divided by a sea lane called the Bosphorus Strait, which joins the Black Sea in the northeast and the Marmara Sea in the southwest. This strait has played a key role in the history of the city.

Bostancı railway station

Bostancı railway station is a railway station in Kadıköy, Istanbul and is the easternmost station in the district. Located along Bağdat Avenue in the Bostancı neighborhood of Kadıköy, it was a station on the Haydarpaşa suburban between 1951 and 2013, when the railway between Haydarpaşa and Pendik was closed. Starting in late 2018, the station will reopen to Marmaray commuter rail service. Prior to 2012, the station was also serviced by many intercity trains to Ankara and Anatolia as well as frequent regional train service to Adapazarı. Intercity train service is expected to return once the station reopens. Bostancı station is 8.64 km (5.37 mi) away from Haydarpaşa Terminal.

Kadıköy (Istanbul Metro) metro station

Kadıköy is the western terminal station on the M4 line of the Istanbul Metro. Located beneath Haydarpaşa Rıhtım Caddesi (Street) it is serviced by the M4 between 6:00 and 0:04. The station has two tracks serving an island platform. Kadıköy opened on 17 August 2012 along with fifteen other stations on the M4 line. The Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan along with the Mayor of Istanbul, Kadir Topbaş and other members of government inaugurated the line from Kadıköy and boarded a train to Kartal.

Üsküdar Ferry Terminal

Eyüp Pier is a ferry slip on the Golden Horn in Eyüp, Istanbul. Located just south of Piyerloti Park, it is the westernmost pier on the Golden Horn. The Municipal ferry operator, Şehir Hatları, operates hourly ferry service from Eyüp to Üsküdar, stopping at seven other piers on the Golden Horn. This route is known as the Golden Horn Line.

Karaköy (Tünel)

Karaköy is a station on the historic Tünel funicular railway in Beyoğlu, Istanbul. Located on Tersane Avenue, just north of the Golden Horn, it is the southern and lower terminus of the 573 m (1,880 ft) railway. The station is located at the ground floor of the IETT General Headquarters Building.

Turyol

Turyol is a private ferry operator, which owns and operates urban and international ferry service in western Turkey, focused primarily around Istanbul. It is one of three private ferry operators in Istanbul, along with İDO and Dentur. Turyol maintains a fleet of 70 vessels, 60 of which are for scheduled passenger service. In terms of fleet size and number of lines, Turyol is the largest private ferry operator in Turkey and second largest overall, after the Istanbul Municipality's ferry operator Şehir Hatları.
