In Belarus, a country that gained independence in 1991, football is the most popular sport, closely followed by ice hockey. The national association takes part in all competitions organized by FIFA and UEFA at senior and youth level, as well as in women’s football. [1]



In 1910 was when football first began in Belarus with a club called First Gymnasium Football Team in Gomel. [2] Dinamo Minsk were once one of the powerhouses in the top flight of Soviet Union football, sometimes playing in European club competitions. A number of Belarusians, such as Sergei Aleinikov, Sergei Borovsky, Sergei Gotsmanov, Ihar Hurynovich, Georgi Kondratiev, Aleksandr Prokopenko, Andrei Zygmantovich and Eduard Malofeyev (as both player and manager), represented the Soviet Union. Today, the star of Belarusian football is Alexander Hleb, who currently plays for BATE Borisov. [3]

In 2020, the Belarusian League gained international recognition during the coronavirus pandemic due to the fact it continued when many other leagues were suspended. [4] [5] [6]

Belarusian Premier League mens associtation football top division of Belarus

The Belarusian Premier League or the Vyšejšaja Liha or the Vysheyshaya Liga is the top division of professional football in Belarus, and is organized by the Belarusian Football Federation. The number of teams in the competition has varied over the years from as high as 17 to as low as 11 (2012). As of 2016, the league includes 16 teams. Each team plays every other team twice during the course of the season. At the end of the season, the two teams with the fewest number of points are automatically relegated to the Belarusian First League, while the 3rd worst team plays a promotion-relegation playoff against the 3rd best team from the 2nd tier. The top two teams from the Belarusian First League automatically win promotion to the Premier League. Dinamo Brest are the current champions, after winning their first championship title in 2019.

A Lyga association football league

The A Lyga is the top division of professional football in Lithuania. It is organized by Lithuanian Football Federation LFF. The league size has varied between 8 and 12 teams in the recent seasons, however 2020 A Lyga the league features only 6 teams. The final list of participants sometimes does not correlate to the final results of the previous season, as the participation is finalized through the Lithuanian Football Federation league licensing process. The season usually kicks off in late February or early March and ends in November. Because of the harsh climate, there are no games in the winter.

Sergei Yevgenyevich Aleinikov is a Belarusian former professional footballer, and currently a coach. He primarily played as a defensive midfielder and was known for his stamina, intelligence, tactical ability and passing ability. He also played in defence as a sweeper.

The 2020 FC BATE Borisov season is the club's 33rd season of existence and their 23rd consecutive season in the Belarusian Premier League. BATE Borisov entered the season as the league's 10-time defending champions. Beyond the Premier League, BATE Borisov is participating in the UEFA Europa League and the Belarusian Cup. Competitive fixtures began on 9 March 2020, and the league began play on 19 March 2020.
