Gunapati Venkata Krishna Reddy (born 22 March 1937) is a philanthropist and entrepreneur. GVK Reddy is the founder and chairman of GVK Group, a business conglomerate with a predominant focus on infrastructure development. [1]

GVK Reddy also heads GVK EMRI, Corporate social responsibility initiatives of GVK. [2] This is an emergency response services provider under a Public-Private Partnership model spread across 15 states and two Union Territories of India. In 2009, he was elected as the Chairman of 108 Ambulance for Andhra Pradesh. [3]

As the President of the All India Senior Tennis Association and a tennis player himself, [4] GVK Reddy has been a keen supporter of budding sporting talent. He has led GVK Group to sponsor many young tennis players including Sania Mirza and Pranjala Yadlapalli. [5]

Early life and education

GVK Reddy was born on 22 March 1937 in Kothur Village of Nellore District in Andhra Pradesh. [6] Reddy did his basic schooling from his village, early college from Nellore and graduated from Hyderabad.  He later completed the Owner/President Management (OPM) Program from Harvard Business School, USA. [7] GV Krishna Reddy is married to Indira Reddy, and has a daughter, Shalini Bhupal, and a son GV Sanjay Reddy.

Career

GVK Reddy began his career at the age of 21 by taking over his family construction business. [8] The starting business was contracting major irrigation projects including bridges, dams, and irrigation canals. His first project included construction of canal and under tunnel at Nagarjuna Sagar Right Canal at Adigoppula and Chamarajapuram. [9] Apart from Airports, Roads & Power, GVK has a presence in Hospitality and Life-Sciences sectors.

One of the milestone achievements for GVK Reddy was winning the Jegurupadu power project in Andhra Pradesh for GVK Group in 1990. This helped the business scale up, form international collaborations and win national recognition in its upcoming projects. Before Jegurupadu power project, he had also led to group to hospitality projects in Hyderabad. [10]

Philanthropy

The philanthropic focus of GVK Reddy is driven by the GVK Foundation which formed to serve the underprivileged. The various endeavors of this foundation now extends to urban improvement initiatives and promoting sports talent. [11]

Under his leadership GVK Group has focused on environment preservation with the setting up of Deer Park which is spread over 6 hectares at the Jegurupada Power Plant and Botanical Gardens in Mumbai. The group has also adapted environment friendly practices in its constructed plants such as Jegurupada Power Plant, Goindwal Sahib Thermal Power Project, Punjab and waste management in airports.

GVK-EMRI's hospital offered free covid treatment after becoming operational on June 7, 2021. [12] GVK Reddy contributed Rs 1 crore for the construction of Ram Mandir. [13]

Dial-108, or one-zero-eight, is a free telephone number for emergency services in India. It is currently operational in 20 states and one union territory. The 108 Emergency Response Service is a free emergency service providing integrated medical, police and fire emergency services. Government of Andhra Pradesh in Public Private Partnership with GVK EMRI launched the 108 Emergency Response Service on 15 August 2005. This system was introduced nationwide by former Union Health Minister, Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss. In Madhya Pradesh. The service is a public-private partnership between state governments and private EMS providers. This 108 service was rolled out initially by Ramalinga Raju and his family in August 2005. It was initially a private funded initiative, but later signed MOUs with multiple state governments from August 2007. In 2007, Chief minister Narendra Modi launched these services in Gujarat on 29 August 2007. With the life-saving service becoming so popular in the rural parts of combined Andhra Pradesh, the (108) system was later introduced by the Central government of India in other parts of India. The system was originally designed by Satyam Infotech. As of November 2014, this service had handled over 540,000 emergency cases in India. From year 2017 to 2022, 108 service in Jharkhand is operated by Ziqitza Healthcare Limited. On an iOS device, "Hey Siri, 108" command to Siri will place an emergency call.

The Veligonda Project is an irrigation project located in Markapur, Prakasam district in Andhra Pradesh, India. When completed, the project will provide irrigational facilities to 459,000 acres and drinking water to 1.5 million people in 29 Mandals of fluoride and drought affected areas in Prakasam district, Nellore district and Kadapa district by diverting 43.5 TMC of floodwater from the Krishna River from foreshore of Srisailam Reservoir near Kollamvagu and proposed to store in Nallamalasagar Reservoir. The water for the project is drawn through two 18.8 km long tunnels across Nallamala hills. The project has been renamed to the "Poola Subbaiah Irrigation Project". It displaces around 20,946 families. The oustees have protested for enhanced compensation over the years and many have not received the compensation promised to them.

Vijayawada–Hyderabad Expressway is a 247 km long, 4/6 lane wide tolled expressway that connects Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh with Hyderabad in Telangana. It was opened for public in October 2012. The project was undertaken by concessionaire GMR Hyderabad Vijayawada Expressways Private Limited, a subsidiary of GMR Group on a Build-Own-Operate-Transfer (BOOT) basis. Jogulamba Barrage is a proposed barrage across Krishna River with full pond level (FPL) 274m. It would be located at Veltoor village, Peddamandadi mandal, Wanaparthy district, Telangana, India. This barrage is proposed to divert 3 TMC of water via lift to Yedula Reservoir being built as part of Palamuru-Rangareddy Lift Irrigation Scheme. This would also provide water for Dindi Lift Irrigation Project and Mahatma Gandhi Kalwakurthy Lift Irrigation Scheme.
