Georg Ludolf Dissen (17 December 1784 – 21 September 1837) was a German classical philologist who was a native of Groß Schneen, a village in the District of Göttingen.
Friedland is a municipality in the district of Göttingen, in Lower Saxony, Germany. It is situated on the river Leine, approx. 13 km south of Göttingen. Its seat is in the village of Groß Schneen, one of five communities in the municipality. The others are Friedland proper, Klein Schneen, Lichtenhagen, and Reiffenhausen.

He studied classical philology at the University of Göttingen, where one of his instructors was Christian Gottlob Heyne (1729-1812). After graduation, he was a lecturer at Göttingen, and in 1812 relocated to the University of Marburg as an associate professor. The following year he returned to Göttingen, where he was a colleague to Friedrich Gottlieb Welcker (1784-1868), Ernst Karl Friedrich Wunderlich (1783-1816) and Karl Otfried Müller (1797-1840). In 1817 he was appointed "full professor", and in 1833 became a full member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences.
The University of Göttingen is a public research university in the city of Göttingen, Germany. It is the oldest university in the state of Lower Saxony and the largest in student enrollment, which stands at around 31,500.
Christian Gottlob Heyne was a German classical scholar and archaeologist as well as long-time director of the Göttingen State and University Library. He was a member of the Göttingen School of History.
The Philipps University of Marburg was founded in 1527 by Philip I, Landgrave of Hesse, which makes it one of Germany's oldest universities and the oldest Protestant university in the world. It is now a public university of the state of Hesse, without religious affiliation. The University of Marburg has about 25,000 students and 7,500 employees and is located in Marburg, a town of 72,000 inhabitants, with university buildings dotted in or around the town centre. About 12% of the students are international, the highest percentage in Hesse. It offers an International summer university programme and offers student exchanges through the Erasmus programme.
Dissen was considered an excellent teacher, and was an important influence to the development of philologist Karl Lachmann (1793-1851). Among his written works were editions of Pindar (1830), Tibullus (1835) and the orations of Demosthenes (1837). In addition, he collaborated with Philipp August Böckh (1785-1867) on the latter's masterful edition of Pindar.
Karl Konrad Friedrich Wilhelm Lachmann was a German philologist and critic. He is particularly noted for his foundational contributions to the field of textual criticism.
Pindar was an Ancient Greek lyric poet from Thebes. Of the canonical nine lyric poets of ancient Greece, his work is the best preserved. Quintilian wrote, "Of the nine lyric poets, Pindar is by far the greatest, in virtue of his inspired magnificence, the beauty of his thoughts and figures, the rich exuberance of his language and matter, and his rolling flood of eloquence, characteristics which, as Horace rightly held, make him inimitable." His poems can also, however, seem difficult and even peculiar. The Athenian comic playwright Eupolis once remarked that they "are already reduced to silence by the disinclination of the multitude for elegant learning". Some scholars in the modern age also found his poetry perplexing, at least until the 1896 discovery of some poems by his rival Bacchylides; comparisons of their work showed that many of Pindar's idiosyncrasies are typical of archaic genres rather than of only the poet himself. His poetry, while admired by critics, still challenges the casual reader and his work is largely unread among the general public.
Albius Tibullus was a Latin poet and writer of elegies. His first and second books of poetry are extant; many other texts attributed to him are of questionable origins.
