Gilman M. Dame was an American politician from Michigan who served as the chairman of the Michigan Republican Party from 1914 to 1916. Dame resided in Northport,Leelanau County,Michigan. [1]
The Big Ten Conference is the oldest Division I collegiate athletic conference in the United States. It is based in Rosemont,Illinois. For many decades this conference consisted of ten universities,and presently has 14 members and two affiliate institutions. Michiana is a region in northern Indiana and southwestern Michigan centered on the city of South Bend,Indiana. The Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team is the intercollegiate football team representing the University of Notre Dame in Notre Dame,Indiana,north of the city of South Bend. The team plays its home games at the campus's Notre Dame Stadium,which has a capacity of 77,622. Notre Dame is one of seven schools that competes as an Independent at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) level;however,they play five games a year against opponents from the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC),of which Notre Dame is a member in all other sports except ice hockey. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic,Notre Dame football competed as an ACC member for the 2020 FBS season. During the 2020 season,they went on to appear in the ACC Championship Game.
The Michigan State Spartans football program (MSU) represents Michigan State University in college football at the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision level. The Spartans are members of the Big Ten Conference. Michigan State claims a total of six national championships. The Spartans have also won eleven conference championships,with two in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association and nine in the Big Ten. The Spartans compete with in-state rival Michigan for the Paul Bunyan Trophy.
Brian Keith Kelly is an American football coach who is currently the head football coach at Louisiana State University (LSU). Kelly previously served as the head football coach at Grand Valley State University (1991–2003),Central Michigan University (2004–2006),the University of Cincinnati (2006–2009),and the University of Notre Dame (2010–2021). He led the Grand Valley State Lakers to consecutive NCAA Division II Football Championships in 2002 and 2003. Kelly's 2012 Notre Dame team reached the 2013 BCS National Championship Game,while his 2018 and 2020 teams made appearances in the College Football Playoff (CFP).
The 1966 Notre Dame vs. Michigan State football game is considered one of the greatest and most controversial games in college football history played between Michigan State and Notre Dame. The game was played in Michigan State's Spartan Stadium on November 19,1966. Michigan State entered the contest 9–0 and ranked No. 2,while Notre Dame entered 8–0 and ranked No. 1. Notre Dame elected not to try for a score on the final series;thus,the game ended in a 10–10 tie. Notre Dame went on to win or share the national title in fourteen polls;Michigan State won or shared in three minor polls,and Alabama,who finished with the only undefeated and untied record,won two minor polls. The 1955 college football season saw the Oklahoma Sooners win the national championship after going 10–0–0. Although the final poll was taken before the postseason bowl games,Oklahoma played against the nation's other unbeaten and untied (10–0–0) team,the Maryland Terrapins,at the Orange Bowl in Miami,and won 20–6.
The 1953 college football season finished with the Maryland Terrapins capturing the AP,INS,and UPI national championship after Notre Dame held the top spot for the first nine weeks. The No. 4 Oklahoma Sooners defeated Maryland in the Orange Bowl,but there was no further polling after the November 30 results were released. However,Notre Dame was selected as the National Champions by 10 other polls and the Oklahoma Sooners received first in two polls. However,despite the team receiving National Championship rings,the University of Notre Dame does not recognize this title due to their policy of only recognizing AP or coaches' poll titles during the polling era (1936–present). Maryland was also the first champion of the Atlantic Coast Conference,which had been formed earlier in 1953 by seven colleges formerly with the Southern Conference. The year 1953 also saw the Michigan State Spartans,previously an independent,join the Big Nine Conference,which then became the Big Ten;MSU won the conference title in that first year and was the conference representative to the Rose Bowl,which it won 28–20 over UCLA.
The 1949 college football season finished with four teams that were unbeaten and untied-- Notre Dame,Oklahoma,California,and Army had won all their games at season's end. Notre Dame,however,was the overwhelming choice for national champion in the AP Poll,with 172 of 208 first place votes. The Fighting Irish did not participate in the New Year's Day bowl games,which were played on January 2,1950.
The 1948 college football season finished with two unbeaten and untied teams:Michigan and Clemson. Michigan was the first-place choice for the majority of the voters in the AP Poll,but did not play in the postseason because of a no-repeat rule for Big Nine schools. Notre Dame,second in the AP Poll,tied USC 14–14 at the end of the regular season,but did not participate in any bowl per university policy at the time. Northwestern beat California 20–14 in the Rose Bowl,and Clemson defeated Missouri by one point in the Gator Bowl.
The 1947 college football season finished with Notre Dame,Michigan,and Penn State all unbeaten and untied,but the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame were the first place choice for 107 of the 142 voters in the final AP Poll in early December,and repeated as national champions.
