In the music industry, a single is a type of release, typically a song recording of fewer tracks than an LP record or an album. This can be released for sale to the public in a variety of different formats. In most cases, a single is a song that is released separately from an album, although it usually also appears on an album. Typically, these are the songs from albums that are released separately for promotional uses such as digital download or commercial radio airplay and are expected to be the most popular. In other cases a recording released as a single may not appear on an album.

According to a Nielsen report, downloadable music accounted for 55.9% of all music sales in the US in 2012. By the beginning of 2011, Apple's iTunes Store alone made US$1.1 billion of revenue in the first quarter of its fiscal year.

Temposhark is an English electronic rock band, formed in London and Brighton by singer-songwriter Robert Diament and one-time music producer Luke Busby. Temposhark were best known for their songs Bye Bye Baby, Joy, It's Better To Have Loved and Not That Big; a duet with singer Imogen Heap which appeared on their 2008 debut album The Invisible Line. Their second album Threads was released in 2010 and reached the top 15 on iTunes UK electronic albums chart. Other notable artist collaborations include Guy Sigsworth, Sean McGhee, Youth from Killing Joke, Kate Havnevik, Melnyk, Camille, MaJiKer, Morgan Page, Avril and the virtuoso violinist Sophie Solomon. Temposhark's music has been featured in numerous television programmes, including the USA advertising campaign for British TV series Downton Abbey in 2011.

Early Cats and Tracks is the fourth EP released by electronica band Psapp. Unlike the band‘s other EPs, Early Cats and Tracks was released exclusively as a digital download through the iTunes Store rather than on vinyl record. The EP is often overlooked, possibly due to its digital distribution, and the fact that the only new track on the album is "In My Head". The band did not announce plans to release the EP on a more conventional format.
Wild Beasts were an English indie rock band, formed in 2002 in Kendal. They released their first single, "Brave Bulging Buoyant Clairvoyants", on Bad Sneakers Records in November 2006, and subsequently signed to Domino Records. They have released five acclaimed albums, Limbo, Panto in 2008, Two Dancers in 2009, Smother in 2011, Present Tense in 2014 and Boy King in 2016. Two Dancers was nominated for the Mercury Prize.
William Edward Ryder-Jones is an English singer-songwriter, musician, producer and composer from West Kirby, Merseyside. He co-founded the band The Coral, together with James Skelly, Lee Southall, Paul Duffy, and Ian Skelly, playing as their lead guitarist from 1996 until 2008. He has since pursued a solo career, writing both his own albums and film scores, as well as producing records for other artists and appearing as a session musician.
Electric Arguments is the third album by The Fireman, an experimental music duo consisting of Paul McCartney and producer Youth. The album was first announced 29 September 2008, on Paul McCartney's website, and was released on 24 November 2008 on the duo's website. It is the first Fireman release to be publicly acknowledged by McCartney, and the album cover features the names of both contributors in contrast to the anonymity of earlier works.
Bitte Orca is the sixth studio album by American experimental rock band Dirty Projectors, released on June 9, 2009 on Domino Records. The word "bitte" is a German word for "please", and "orca" is another name for a killer whale. Frontman David Longstreth states that he liked the way the words sound together. Longstreth notes that the music contained within the album "felt very [much] about colors, and their interaction," and that the music was written with the notion of the band, as a whole, in mind.
"Dominos" is the first single from The Big Pink's debut album A Brief History of Love. "Dominos" was released as a digital download and on 7" vinyl on September 7, 2009, a week before the release of the album. The song was co-produced by the band and record producer Paul Epworth, and mixed by Rich Costey. In their native United Kingdom, the song peaked on the UK Singles Chart at #27 and #10 on the Irish Singles Chart in the Republic of Ireland. The single's B-side, "She's No Sense", features vocals from Florence Welch of Florence and the Machine.
Honest Words is an EP by Scottish singer-songwriter King Creosote and English electronica musician Jon Hopkins, released on 19 September 2011 on Domino Records. The release is available on 12" vinyl and digital download.
"John Taylor's Month Away"/"Missionary" is a double a-side single by King Creosote and Jon Hopkins, that was released on February 6, 2012 on Domino Records. The track, "John Taylor's Month Away", is taken from the duo's studio album, Diamond Mine, while "Missionary" originally appeared on Creosote's Kenny and Beth's Musakal Boat Rides. Hopkins and Creosote recorded a new version of the track, initially intended for inclusion on Diamond Mine, but ultimately removed it from the track listing.
Sexy Lady is a song recorded by British singer-songwriter Jessie J for her second studio album, Alive (2013). Appearing on as the fourth song on the album's track listing, "Sexy Lady" was written by Jessie and long-term collaborator Claude Kelly. American record producer Joshua "Ammo" Coleman wrote and produced the music for the song, whilst additional production came from O.C. and Kevin Figs; Jessie's vocals on the song were produced by Kelly.
