History

The event was established in 1963, and it was originally called the Westbury Stakes. It was initially held in late May or early June. [1]

The Westbury Stakes continued to be staged in May or June until 1973. That year's edition took place at Kempton Park. [2] Its date was switched with that of the Brigadier Gerard Stakes in 1974, and from this point it was held in April. [3]

The race was given its present title in 1987. It was renamed in memory of Sir Gordon Richards, a famous jockey who died the previous year. [4]

The Gordon Richards Stakes is part of a two-day meeting which features both flat and jump races. Other events at the meeting include the Bet365 Gold Cup, the Celebration Chase, the Sandown Classic Trial and the Sandown Mile.

Pourparler was an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare who won the classic 1000 Guineas in 1964. In a racing career lasting from the spring of 1963 until July 1964, the filly ran ten times and won three races. As a two-year-old, Pourparler won two important races in England and finished third in the Prix Robert Papin in France. In the following spring, she was beaten in her first two races before winning the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket. She was beaten in her two subsequent races before being retired to stud, where she had limited success as a broodmare.

Princely Gift (1951–1973) was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. In a racing career which lasted from 1953 until 1955 he ran twenty-three times and won nine races. After showing good, but unexceptional form in his first two seasons, he improved significantly in the summer of 1955 and ended his career with a record-breaking win in the Portland Handicap. Having been awarded one of the highest Timeform figures of the decade, Princely Gift was retired to stud at the end of the season and had considerable success as a sire of winners.

Ridge Wood (1946–1956) was a British Thoroughbred racehorse best known for winning the classic St Leger Stakes in 1949. The colt was rejected by his prospective owner as a yearling and failed to win as a two-year-old in 1948. Even after winning five of his first six races as a three-year-old he was not regarded as a top-class performer even by his trainer, who only ran him in the St Leger when a more fancied stable companion was injured. After winning the Leger as a 14/1 outsider, Ridge Wood was defeated in his only subsequent start and was retired to stud, where he was a failure as a breeding stallion. He died at the age of ten in 1956.

Connaught was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. Noted for his difficult temperament and front-running style he won seven of his sixteen races in a track career which lasted from October 1967 to July 1970. Owned and bred by Jim Joel, he was trained by Noel Murless and ridden in most of his races by Sandy Barclay.

Scottish Rifle was an Irish-bred British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. After winning one minor race as a juvenile he emerged as a top-class middle distance colt in 1972, winning the Predominate Stakes, Gordon Stakes and March Stakes as well as finishing second in the Irish Derby. He reached his peak as a four-year-old in 1973, winning the Earl of Sefton Stakes, Brigadier Gerard Stakes, Westbury Stakes, Eclipse Stakes and Cumberland Lodge Stakes. He also finished second in the Prince of Wales's Stakes and the Benson and Hedges Gold Cup and ran third in the Washington D C International. After his retirement from racing he stood as a breeding stallion in England and Czechoslovakia but had little success as a sire of winners. He died in 1984.
