Green Bay–Austin Straubel International Airport( IATA : GRB, ICAO : KGRB, FAA LID : GRB), is a county-owned public-use airport in Brown County, Wisconsin, United States, which serves Northeastern Wisconsin. [1] The airport is located 7 nautical miles (13 km ; 8.1 mi ) southwest of downtown Green Bay, [1] in the village of Ashwaubenon. It is included in the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2021–2025, in which it is categorized as a non-hub primary commercial service facility. [3] The airport sits on portions of land encompassing Green Bay and the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin's Indian reservation. It has two runways and is used for commercial air travel and general aviation. There are two concourses with six gates each. [4] The airport is named for Lt. Col. Austin Straubel, the first aviator from Brown County to lose his life in his country's service on February 3, 1942, after having served for thirteen years in the United States Army Air Corps. The airport name was officially changed to Green Bay–Austin Straubel International Airport on August 17, 2016. [5] [6]
Green Bay–Austin Straubel International Airport is also known as "The Gateway to Lambeau", as it is the primary airport utilized for people traveling to Lambeau Field, home of the Green Bay Packers. [7]
Green Bay–Austin Straubel International Airport has two fixed-base operators: Executive Air and Jet Air. Both offer full service during operating hours. The airport covers 2,441 acres (988 ha) and has two runways. [1]
For the twelve-month period ending December 31, 2019, the airport had 44,698 aircraft operations, an average of 122 per day: 64% general aviation, 18% air taxi, 16% commercial airline and 2% military. TWA Flight 427 was a regularly scheduled TWA passenger flight departing Lambert-St. Louis International Airport (STL) in Bridgeton, Missouri on November 22, 1994, operated using a McDonnell Douglas MD-82. On the takeoff roll it struck a Cessna 441 Conquest II, killing both of its occupants. It was the second of two flights numbered 427 that would be involved in an incident that year, the other being USAir Flight 427, which crashed in September near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania killing all 132 on board.
On April 9, 1990, Atlantic Southeast Airlines Flight 2254, a scheduled passenger flight from Muscle Shoals, Alabama, to Gadsden, Alabama, to Atlanta, Georgia, was involved in a mid-air collision with a Cessna 172 over Gadsden. The collision resulted in the death of the pilot and passenger of the Cessna 172.
On May 30, 1972, Delta Air Lines Flight 9570 crashed while attempting to land at the Greater Southwest International Airport (GSW) in Fort Worth, Texas during a training flight. All four occupants aboard the training flight were killed. The crash was determined to be caused by the aircraft flying through wake turbulence, and led to sweeping changes in procedures for maintaining minimum safe distance behind aircraft that generate substantial wake turbulence.
On July 7, 2015, an F-16 fighter jet operated by the United States Air Force collided in-flight with a private Cessna 150 single-engine light aircraft over Moncks Corner, South Carolina, United States. Both occupants of the Cessna were killed; the pilot of the F-16 ejected safely.
