Line 1 is a rapid transit line of the Ho Chi Minh City Metro, Vietnam. [1] Line 1 is the city's first metro line, connecting District 1 and Thu Duc City. [2] [3] The line began construction in 2012, initially scheduled for completion in 2018. The project's completion date has been delayed to the end of 2024. [4] [5] [6] Ticket prices will range from VND9,000-23,000 ($0.39-1) per trip. [7]
The line was designed by Nippon Koei. The above-ground section was constructed by a joint venture between the Japanese rail corporation Sumitomo Group and Vietnamese state-owned corporation Cienco 6. The underground section was constructed by two Japanese companies, Shimizu Corporation and Maeda Corporation. 83% of the project finance was provided by Japanese government loans through Japan International Cooperation Agency, while the rest was provided by the Vietnamese government. On 13 September 2017, the authorities announced that Line 1 would be delayed for two years. Cost overruns, audits, and delayed payments to contractors contributed to the delay. The targeted completion date was set for 2020. [9] Planners expect the route to serve more than 160,000 passengers daily upon launch, increasing to 635,000 by 2030 and 800,000 by 2040. All stations along the route are expected to accommodate the disabled, with automatic ticket vending machines, telephone booths, restrooms, subway doors and information bulletins accessible to the handicapped and visually impaired.
On 28 January 2019, MAUR Director of Project Management Unit Duong Huu Hoa stated that as of December 2018, construction progress of Line 1 has reached 62%, below the target of 65%. The project has been criticised by the local press for its repeated delays. [10]
By August 2022, the line is 92% complete. 17 Hitachi train sets have arrived and are undergoing testing. [11] [12]
By February 2024, the line is now 97.5% complete. Test runs have begone occurring, and MAUR are planning for commercial use in Q4 2024. [13]
The first three stations - Bến Thành, Opera House and Ba Son - are underground, with the remainder being on elevated track. [14]

Transportation in Vietnam is improving rapidly in terms of both quantity and quality. Road traffic is growing rapidly but the major roads are dangerous and slow to travel on due to outdated design and an inappropriate traffic mix. In recent years, the construction of expressways has accelerated. Air travel is also important for long distance travel. Metro systems are under construction in the two metropolises of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

Tao Dan Park is an urban park in District 1, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam behind the Independence Palace. It is of the largest parks in the city, covering 10 hectares. Part of the park will be used for the Ho Chi Minh City Metro Line 2's Tao Dan Station. The park formerly hosted a bird park that attracted songbird owners.
The Nguyen Thien Thuat apartment buildings are a complex of American-built historic buildings in District 3, Ho Chi Minh City. The apartments are located on Nguyen Thien Thuat street, a thoroughfare known for its musical instrument shops.
The Saigon Waterbus is a transportation service in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam operating on the Saigon River. Launched in November 2017, the Waterbus offers services between District 1 and Thu Duc City. In 2021, the Waterbus launched an evening service from 5:00-9:00 PM.
The Ba Son Bridge, originally known as Thu Thiem 2 Bridge, is a 6-lane bridge in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, opened in 2022. The bridge crosses the Saigon River to link District 1 and Thu Duc City.
Bến Thành Station is a future underground Ho Chi Minh City Metro interchange station on the future Line 1, Line 2, Line 3A, and Line 4A. Located in front of Bến Thành Market, the station will serve as the central metro station in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.
Opera House Station is a future underground Ho Chi Minh City Metro station on Line 1. Built in front of the Municipal Theatre of Ho Chi Minh City, underneath Lê Lợi Boulevard, the station opened to public viewing in April 2020. It is expected to be completed in by the end of 2023 before public operations begin in early 2024.
Long Binh Depot is a train depot located in Thu Duc, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The 20 ha depot serves as the control center and maintenance yard for Line 1 of the Ho Chi Minh City Metro.
Ba Son Station is a future underground Ho Chi Minh City Metro station on Line 1. Located in District 1 at the site of the former Ba Son Shipyard, the station is planned to open in 2024.

Bàn Cờ Market is a market in District 3, Ho Chi Minh City selling a variety of produce, meat, and prepared foods. The market is located off Ban Co Street between Nguyen Dinh Chieu and Dien Bien Phu, near the Nguyen Thien Thuat apartment buildings. Bàn Cờ Market comprises one main laneway and several branching off, its name "Bàn Cờ" reflects the market's resemblance to a chessboard in layout. The market is popular for its Vietnamese street food, including banh xeo, bot chien, and banh khot.
Turtle Lake is a lake surrounded by a traffic roundabout in District 3, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Located at the intersection of Pham Ngoc Thach, Tran Cao Van and Vo Van Tan streets, the lake is adorned with a modernist monument designed by architect Nguyễn Kỳ, and unveiled in 1969. Prior to this, a 1878-built French water tower existed, which was replaced by a small lake and monument in 1921. The area is popular for street food vendors, and in 2023 was developed into a pedestrian area.
