Mjøsa is Norway's largest lake, as well as one of the deepest lakes in Norway and in Europe. It is the fourth-deepest lake in Norway. It is located in the southern part of Norway, about 100 km north of Oslo. Its main tributary is Gudbrandsdalslågen in the north; the only distributary is Vorma in the south. Inflows would theoretically need 5.6 years to fill the lake. With an average depth of 153 meters, most of the lake's volume is under sea level. Average outflow is 316 m3/s or 9959 million m3. Mjøse contains about 56 km3 of water compared to 15 km3 of Røssvatnet, the second largest volume of lakes in Norway.

Vikingskipet, officially known as Hamar Olympic Hall, is an indoor multi-use sport and event venue in Hamar, Norway. It was built as the speed skating rink for the 1994 Winter Olympics, and has since also hosted events and tournaments in ice speedway, rally, association football, bandy, ice sledge speed racing, flying disc and track cycling. The arena is also used for concerts, trade fair and the annual computer party The Gathering. It is the home arena of Hamar IL bandy team. The venue is owned by Hamar Municipality, and along with Hamar Olympic Amphitheatre is run by the municipal Hamar Olympiske Anlegg. Vikingskipet has a capacity for 10,600 spectators during sporting events and 20,000 during concerts.

Storhamar Idrettslag is a Norwegian multi-sports club based in Hamar. It has sections for ice hockey, team handball, association football and figure skating.

The competition started with two qualifying rounds on 11 April and 21 April, and the final was held on 14 November at Ullevaal Stadion. A total of 127 games were played and 508 goals were scored. The 1938 Norwegian Football Cup was the 37th season of the Norwegian annual knockout football tournament. The tournament was open for all members of NFF, except those from Northern Norway. The final was played at Briskeby in Hamar on 16 October 1938, and was contested by the defending champions Mjøndalen and the three-time former winners Fredrikstad. Fredrikstad secured their fourth title with a 3-2 win after extra time in the final. Fredrikstad's cup-victory completed the first Norwegian double, having also won the inaugural League of Norway.
