Mathematical optimization or mathematical programming is the selection of a best element,with regard to some criterion,from some set of available alternatives. It is generally divided into two subfields:discrete optimization and continuous optimization. Optimization problems arise in all quantitative disciplines from computer science and engineering to operations research and economics,and the development of solution methods has been of interest in mathematics for centuries.

Babak Hassibi is an Iranian-American electrical engineer,computer scientist,and applied mathematician who is the inaugural Mose and Lillian S. Bohn Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computing and Mathematical Sciences at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). From 2011 to 2016 he was the Gordon M Binder/Amgen Professor of Electrical Engineering. During 2008-2015 he was the Executive Officer of Electrical Engineering and Associate Director of Information Science and Technology.
Stochastic control or stochastic optimal control is a sub field of control theory that deals with the existence of uncertainty either in observations or in the noise that drives the evolution of the system. The system designer assumes,in a Bayesian probability-driven fashion,that random noise with known probability distribution affects the evolution and observation of the state variables. Stochastic control aims to design the time path of the controlled variables that performs the desired control task with minimum cost,somehow defined,despite the presence of this noise. The context may be either discrete time or continuous time.
In game theory,differential games are a group of problems related to the modeling and analysis of conflict in the context of a dynamical system. More specifically,a state variable or variables evolve over time according to a differential equation. Early analyses reflected military interests,considering two actors—the pursuer and the evader—with diametrically opposed goals. More recent analyses have reflected engineering or economic considerations.
Ali H. Sayed is the dean of engineering at EPFL,where he teaches and conducts research on Adaptation,Learning,Statistical Signal Processing,and Signal Processing for Communications. He is the Director of the EPFL Adaptive Systems Laboratory. He has authored several books on estimation and filtering theories,including the textbook Adaptive Filters,published by Wiley &Sons in 2008. Professor Sayed received the degrees of Engineer and Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Sao Paulo,Brazil,in 1987 and 1989,respectively,and the Doctor of Philosophy degree in electrical engineering from Stanford University in 1992.
Game theory has been used as a tool for modeling and studying interactions between cognitive radios envisioned to operate in future communications systems. Such terminals will have the capability to adapt to the context they operate in,through possibly power and rate control as well as channel selection. Software agents embedded in these terminals will potentially be selfish,meaning they will only try to maximize the throughput/connectivity of the terminal they function for,as opposed to maximizing the welfare of the system they operate in. Thus,the potential interactions among them can be modeled through non-cooperative games. The researchers in this field often strive to determine the stable operating points of systems composed of such selfish terminals,and try to come up with a minimum set of rules (etiquette) so as to make sure that the optimality loss compared to a cooperative –centrally controlled setting –is kept at a minimum.

Dimitri Panteli Bertsekas is an applied mathematician,electrical engineer,and computer scientist,a McAfee Professor at the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in School of Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT),Cambridge,Massachusetts,and also a Fulton Professor of Computational Decision Making at Arizona State University,Tempe.
Mean-field game theory is the study of strategic decision making by small interacting agents in very large populations. It lies at the intersection of game theory with stochastic analysis and control theory. The use of the term "mean field" is inspired by mean-field theory in physics,which considers the behavior of systems of large numbers of particles where individual particles have negligible impacts upon the system. In other words,each agent acts according to his minimization or maximization problem taking into account other agents’decisions and because their population is large we can assume the number of agents goes to infinity and a representative agent exists.
Harold Vincent Poor FRS FREng is the Michael Henry Strater University Professor of Electrical Engineering at Princeton University,where he is also the Interim Dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Science. He is a specialist in wireless telecommunications,signal processing and information theory. He has received many honorary degrees and election to national academies. He was also President of IEEE Information Theory Society (1990). He is on the board of directors of the IEEE Foundation.
Georgios B. Giannakis is a Greek-American Computer Scientist,engineer and inventor. He has been an Endowed Chair Professor of Wireless Telecommunications,he was Director of the Digital Technology Center,and at present he is a McKnight Presidential Chair with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Minnesota.
A blockchain is a distributed ledger with growing lists of records (blocks) that are securely linked together via cryptographic hashes. Each block contains a cryptographic hash of the previous block,a timestamp,and transaction data. Since each block contains information about the previous block,they effectively form a chain,with each additional block linking to the ones before it. Consequently,blockchain transactions are irreversible in that,once they are recorded,the data in any given block cannot be altered retroactively without altering all subsequent blocks.
A decentralised application is an application that can operate autonomously,typically through the use of smart contracts,that run on a decentralized computing,blockchain or other distributed ledger system. Like traditional applications,DApps provide some function or utility to its users. However,unlike traditional applications,DApps operate without human intervention and are not owned by any one entity,rather DApps distribute tokens that represent ownership. These tokens are distributed according to a programmed algorithm to the users of the system,diluting ownership and control of the DApp. Without any one entity controlling the system,the application is therefore decentralised.
Ji-Feng Zhang was born in Shandong,China. He is currently the vice-chair of the technical board of the International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC),the vice-president of the Systems Engineering Society of China (SESC),the vice-president of the Chinese Association of Automation (CAA),the chair of the technical committee on Control Theory (CAA),and the editor-in-chief for both All About Systems and Control and the Journal of Systems Science and Mathematical Sciences.
Salman A. Avestimehr is a Dean's professor at the Electrical &Computer Engineering and Computer Science Departments of University of Southern California,where he is the inaugural director of the USC-Amazon Center for Secure and Trusted Machine Learning and the director of the Information Theory and Machine Learning (vITAL) research lab. He is also the CEO and Co-Founder of FedML. Avestimehr's contributions in research and publications are in the areas of information theory,machine learning,large-scale distributed computing,and secure/private computing and learning. In particular,he is best known for deterministic approximation approaches to network information theory and coded computing. He was a general co-chair of the 2020 International Symposium on Information Theory (ISIT),and is a Fellow of IEEE. He is also co-authors of four books titled “An Approximation Approach to Network Information Theory”,“Multihop Wireless Networks:A Unified Approach to Relaying and Interference Management”,“Coded Computing”,and “Problem Solving Strategies for Elementary-School Math.”
