United States Federal republic in North America

The United States of America (USA), commonly known as the United States or America, is a country composed of 50 states, a federal district, five major self-governing territories, and various possessions. At 3.8 million square miles, the United States is the world's third or fourth largest country by total area and is slightly smaller than the entire continent of Europe's 3.9 million square miles. With a population of over 327 million people, the U.S. is the third most populous country. The capital is Washington, D.C., and the largest city by population is New York City. Forty-eight states and the capital's federal district are contiguous in North America between Canada and Mexico. The State of Alaska is in the northwest corner of North America, bordered by Canada to the east and across the Bering Strait from Russia to the west. The State of Hawaii is an archipelago in the mid-Pacific Ocean. The U.S. territories are scattered about the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, stretching across nine official time zones. The extremely diverse geography, climate, and wildlife of the United States make it one of the world's 17 megadiverse countries.

Contents

Hardcore Gamer concentrates on niche and indie video game titles, such as Disgaea and Limbo , and contains specialty features which differ from what more mainstream outlets generally cover. The Graveyard feature, for instance, covers forgotten retro games. Although primarily focusing on specialty games, Hardcore Gamer features stories for major releases such as Grand Theft Auto V and The Last of Us , assessing them from alternative perspectives.

A niche market is the subset of the market on which a specific product is focused. The market niche defines the product features aimed at satisfying specific market needs, as well as the price range, production quality and the demographics that it is intended to target. It is also a small market segment.

<i>Disgaea</i> video game series

Disgaea is a series of tactical role-playing video games created and developed by Nippon Ichi. The series debuted in Japan on January 30, 2003, with Disgaea: Hour of Darkness, later re-released as Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness and Disgaea DS. One of Nippon Ichi's most popular franchises, it has branched off into both a manga and anime series. The Disgaea games take place in a fictional universe called the Netherworld and are known for elements, such as complex gameplay, extremely high maximum stats and humorous dialogue. Main characters in the series often include cynical, power-hungry antiheroes forced to fight alongside heroic foils. The Disgaea series has sold 3 million games as of May 18, 2017.

<i>Limbo</i> (video game) video game

Limbo is a puzzle-platform video game developed by independent studio Playdead. The game was released in July 2010 on Xbox Live Arcade, and has since been ported to several other systems, including the PlayStation 3 and Microsoft Windows. Limbo is a 2D side-scroller, incorporating a physics system that governs environmental objects and the player character. The player guides an unnamed boy through dangerous environments and traps as he searches for his sister. The developer built the game's puzzles expecting the player to fail before finding the correct solution. Playdead called the style of play "trial and death", and used gruesome imagery for the boy's deaths to steer the player from unworkable solutions.

History

Hardcore Gamer Magazine printed its first issue in June 2005. While most magazines were strictly print, Hardcore Gamer offered free copies of every issue in PDF file format in addition to the hard copies. Until April 2007, nearly every issue's cover was hand drawn by former GameFan artist Terry Wolfinger. Beginning in 2008, Hardcore Gamer changed its format by switching their release schedule from monthly to quarterly and shifting much of their coverage to their newly launched website. In addition to the change of format, Hardcore Gamer Magazine's logo was changed and the magazine began to be referred to as simply Hardcore Gamer. In 2009, Hardcore Gamer changed their release schedule once again to become a bi-annual magazine. In late 2009, former Editorial Director, Steve Hannley, purchased the publication in a private sale, pledging to continue with all current staff. [2]

The Portable Document Format (PDF) is a file format developed by Adobe in the 1990s to present documents, including text formatting and images, in a manner independent of application software, hardware, and operating systems. Based on the PostScript language, each PDF file encapsulates a complete description of a fixed-layout flat document, including the text, fonts, vector graphics, raster images and other information needed to display it. PDF was standardized as an open format, ISO 32000, in 2008, and no longer requires any royalties for its implementation.

<i>GameFan</i>

GameFan was a publication started by Tim Lindquist and Dave Halverson in September 1992 that provided coverage of domestic and import video games. It was notable for its extensive use of game screenshots in page design because of the lack of good screen shots in other U.S. publications at the time. The original magazine ceased publishing in December 2000. On April 2010, Halverson relaunched GameFan as a hybrid video game/film magazine. However, this relaunch was short-lived and suffered from many internal conflicts, advertising revenue being the main one.

After publishing a final print issue in 2010, the publication was then moved exclusively online where it has remained. In addition to a large review base and features carried over from the magazine, Hardcore Gamer now includes constant news updates and numerous editorials, as well as video content and livestreaming. [3]

Tim Lindquist, the founder of Hardcore Gamer, co-founded GameFan with Dave Halverson. Both magazines have an emphasis on the hardcore gaming community and feature article layouts stylistically embedded with images. In addition to Tim Lindquist, Terry Wolfinger and Greg Off, who were key staff of GameFan, both worked on Hardcore Gamer.

Dave Halverson is an American video game journalist who has been the founder, publisher and editor-in-chief of GameFan, Gamers' Republic, Play, and currently the new versions of GameFan. Halverson is regarded as a well-known but a controversial and polarizing figure in video game journalism regarding his personality, actions and statements, such as his aggressive criticism of the poor reception of Golden Axe: Beast Rider by many other outlets, and also initially giving the Xbox 360 version of Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) a 9.5, which is regarded as one of the worst video games of all-time. He also reviewed anime releases, including for Gamers' Republic.
