Hasanuddin Murad (10 October 1957 –18 May 2023) was an Indonesian politician affiliated with the Golkar Party. He had served in the legislature as a member of the People's Representative Council (DPR) from 1999 until 2007 and the South Kalimantan Regional People's Representative Council (DPRD) from 2019 until his death in 2023. Murad also served as the regent in his birthplace,Barito Kuala,from 2007 until 2017.
Hasanuddin Murad was born on 10 October 1957 in Marabahan,Barito Kuala,South Kalimantan,from the couple Abdul Murad and Badariah. Both of his parents were of Bakumpai ethnicity and worked as farmers. Murad completed his basic education at the Banjarmasin 7th State Junior High School (1971–1973) and Banjarmasin 28th Vocational Junior High School (1975–1977). During his time at the vocational junior high school,Murad became the chairman of Banjarmasin's social youth association and the school's student council. [1]
Upon completing junior high school,Murad continued his education at a Muhammadiyah-run high school in Banjarmasin. He then began studying law at the Lambung Mangkurat University (Unlam) from 1978 until 1986. Murad began working during his time in the university,being the director of the Cipta Guna Marabahan company from 1982 until 1986 and the chairman of the student senate of Unlam's law faculty. [1]
Murad completed his law education in 1986 and began teaching law at the Lambung Mangkurat University. Murad continued to study during his teaching career. He attended a post-graduate course on classic and contemporary social science theory at the Gadjah Mada University in 1986. He also attended non-degree postgraduate studies at the Satyagama University from 1999 until 2000. [1]
Murad's political career began after his graduation from the university. He joined Kosgoro,a mass organization related to the state-sponsored Golkar Party. He became the youth chief of the organization in 1986. He later joined the National Youth Committee (KNPI,Komite Nasional Pemuda Indonesia) and became the deputy leader of KNPI in South Kalimantan for seven years. After being involved in youth organizations for several years,Murad eventually joined Golkar,becoming a staff member in the research and development section of the party. He became the chief of the party's organization bureau in South Kalimantan in 1999. [1]
Murad's involvement in the Golkar Party led to his positions in the national legislative bodies. He was elected to the DPR in the 1999 Indonesian legislative election,representing Barito Kuala Regency. During his first term,Murad was seated in Commission IV of the People's Representative Council,which handles transport and infrastructure. He was involved in several special committees in DPR,such as the special committee on Aceh and the special committee on the protection and development of manpower. [1]
Murad was nominated again for a seat in the People's Representative Council in 2004. He was nominated by Golkar for the South Kalimantan constituency and obtained 40,399 votes,thus allowing him a seat in DPR for a second term. [2] During his second term,Murad continued to handle transport and infrastructure. He was seated in the lawmaking body of the DPR and was involved in formulating several bills,such as the bill on Aceh,manpower development and protection,building,industrial dispute settlement,water resources,pornography,information and electronic transactions,the elimination of racial and ethnic discrimination,spatial planning,railways,shipping,aviation,and traffic and highways. In 2007,Murad resigned from the People's Representative Council after being elected as the Regent of Barito Kuala,his birthplace. He was re-elected for the same position in 2012. During his tenure,Murad frequently met with farmers and engaged in the construction of roads,bridges,and irrigation to support local agriculture. [4] At the end of his second term,in 2016 nine villages in the regency began receiving electricity from the local power grid. [5] Murad was succeeded by Noormiliyani Aberani Sulaiman,his wife,in 2017. Noormiliyani previously served as the speaker of the South Kalimantan Regional People's Representative Council. [6]
After the end of his term as regent,Murad was nominated for the South Kalimantan Regional People's Representative Council in the 2019 Indonesian general election,representing Barito Kuala. [7] Murad initially wanted to run as a senator,but his wish was rejected by the Golkar party,who instructed him to ran for the local legislature instead. [8] Murad obtained 40,482 votes in the election and obtained a seat. He was a strong candidate for the speaker of the council but lost the political bidding. [9] He then became the chairman of the council's commission for development and infrastructure. [10]
Hasanuddin Murad was married to Noormiliyani Aberani Sulaiman. The couple has a child. [1]
Murad died on the afternoon of 18 May 2023 at the Gleneagles Hospital Kuala Lumpur. He was 65. [11] His body arrived in Indonesia later that night, [11] and was buried at the Taman Bahagia Cemetery the next day. [12]
South Kalimantan is a province of Indonesia. It is the smallest province in Kalimantan,the Indonesian territory of Borneo. The provincial capital was Banjarmasin until 15 February 2022 when it was legally moved to Banjarbaru. The population of South Kalimantan was recorded at just over 3.625 million people at the 2010 Census,and at 4.07 million at the 2020 Census. The official estimate as at mid 2021 was 4,112,576. One of the five Indonesian provinces in Kalimantan,it is bordered by the Makassar Strait in the east,Central Kalimantan in the west and north,the Java Sea in the south,and East Kalimantan in the north. The province also includes the island of Laut,located off the eastern coast of Kalimantan. The province is divided into 11 regencies and 2 cities. South Kalimantan is the traditional homeland of the Banjar people,although some parts of East Kalimantan and Central Kalimantan are also included in this criteria. Nevertheless,South Kalimantan,especially the former capital city Banjarmasin has always been the cultural capital of Banjarese culture. Many Banjarese have migrated to other parts of Indonesia,as well as neighbouring countries such as Singapore and Malaysia. In addition,other ethnic groups also inhabit the province,such as several groups of the Dayaks,who mostly live in the interior part of the province,as well as the Javanese,who mostly migrated from Java due to the Transmigration program which dated from the Dutch colonial era.
Banjarmasin is a city in South Kalimantan,Indonesia. It was the capital of the province until 15 February 2022. The city is located on a delta island near the junction of the Barito and Martapura rivers. Historically the centre of the Banjarese culture,and the capital of the Sultanate of Banjar,it is the biggest city in South Kalimantan and one of the main cities of Kalimantan. The city covers an area of 98.46 km2 (38.02 sq mi) and had a population of 625,481 as of the 2010 Census and 657,663 as of the 2020 Census;the official estimate as of mid 2021 was 662,320. Greater Banjarmasin,also known as Banjarbakula,is an urban agglomeration of around two million people covering an area of 8,136 km2 (3,141 sq mi),which includes Banjarbaru city and parts of Banjar Regency,Barito Kuala Regency,and Tanah Laut Regency,and accounts for almost half of the province's population. It is the third most populous city on the island of Borneo.
Banjarbaru is the capital city of South Kalimantan,one of the provinces in Indonesia. It is located 35 km (22 mi) southeast of Banjarmasin,the largest city of the province. The city had a population of 199,627 as of the 2010 Census,and 253,442 at the 2020 Census,and the official population estimate is 258,750. The town of Martapura lies immediately to the north of Banjarbaru,and in effect constitutes an extension of the city. The second largest city in the province after Banjarmasin,it is also part of Banjarbakula metropolitan area.
The Banjar or Banjarese are an indigenous ethnic group native to the Banjar regions in the southeastern Kalimantan regions of Indonesia. Nowadays,Banjarese diaspora can be found in neighbouring Banjar regions as well;including Kotabaru Regency,the southeastern regions of Central Kalimantan,southernmost regions of East Kalimantan,and some provinces of Indonesia in general. The Banjarese diaspora community also can be found in neighbouring countries of Indonesia,such as Brunei,Malaysia,and Singapore.
Bakumpai or Baraki are indigenous people of Borneo and are considered as a sub-ethnic group of the Dayak Ngaju people group with Islamic background. The Bakumpai people first occupy along the Barito riverbanks in South Kalimantan and Central Kalimantan,from Marabahan to Puruk Cahu,Murung Raya Regency. The Bakumpai people first appeared as a newly recognized people group in census 2000 and were made up of 7.51% of Central Kalimantan population,which before this the Bakumpai people were considered as part of the Dayak people in a 1930 census.
Hasan Basry was a military general,Indonesian nationalist leader,and was a key figure in the liberation of Kalimantan from Dutch rule. During the Indonesian National Revolution,he acted as the military representative of the Indonesian army in Kalimantan and led a guerilla war against the Linggadjati Agreement. He was a key figure behind the 17 May Proclamation which rallied Kalimantan natives against Dutch rule in 1949. He was declared a National Hero of Indonesia in 2001.
Karolin Margret Natasa is an Indonesian politician who served as regent of Landak between 2017 and 2022. Previously,she had served as a member of the People's Representative Council.

Jukung tambangan is a traditional boat made by the Banjar people of South Kalimantan. They are mainly used for riverine transportation. It is already present at least since mid-18th century. They were not seen anymore in Banjarmasin ca. 1950s and around the 1970s on the Nagara River,Hulu Sungai Selatan Regency.
The Kalimantan Physical Revolution was an armed conflict between Indonesian nationalists in and pro-Dutch forces in Dutch Borneo following the end of the Japanese occupation of the Dutch East Indies and the 1945 Proclamation of Indonesian Independence by Sukarno and which lasted until the Dutch withdrew from most of Indonesia in 1949. It can be considered a regional conflict in the larger Indonesian National Revolution. After the surrender of the Japanese at the end of World War II,allied forces took control of the Dutch East Indies,including Dutch Borneo. The return of Dutch authorities however,was rejected by majority of native population,including in Borneo,resulting in various regional armed conflicts between Royal Netherlands East Indies Army and Indonesian nationalist forces. Allied military forces in Borneo were in a strong position after an early conflict in August 1945,and were able to pacify local nationalist uprisings and impose a blockade to prevent military aid and exchange in personnel from nationalist strongholds in Java and Sumatra. Later,nationalists with connections to Borneo were able to breach tofhe military blockade to provide information revolutionary events in Java and Sumatra,declaring Kalimantan as inseparable part of the new Indonesian republic.
South Kalimantan People's Representative Council is the unicameral legislature of the Indonesian province of South Kalimantan. The council is composed of 55 members chosen every 5 years from the general election. Currently,Golkar Party is currently party with the most seats in this province. In addition,the council has four commissions.
BRT Banjarbakula,also informally known as "Tayo bus",is a bus rapid transit (BRT) system serving Greater Banjarmasin metropolitan area,encompassing Banjarmasin,Banjarbaru,and parts of Banjar Regency in Indonesia. It comprises three routes and more than 37 bus stops as of 2019. After several months of trials with free service,it launched on 14 August 2019 to coincide with the celebration of 69 years since the creation of South Kalimantan province. The local government plans to expand the system to 6 routes and a total of 112 bus stops,encompassing the entire Banjar regency,Tanah Laut regency,and Barito Kuala regency;covering the entire metropolitan area with service. The government is also considering handing operations to a private firm in 2021 to boost its development. As of September 2020,recruitment of new drivers for the service was stalled because of the COVID-19 pandemic,hampering route and fleet expansion needed to keep up with demand.
Adang Sudrajat was an Indonesian medical doctor and elected official for the Prosperous Justice Party in the People's Representative Council (DPR-RI) and Bandung city council. His second term in the DPR-RI ended abruptly due to his death from COVID-19 in July 2021.
Abdul Wahab Dalimunthe was an Indonesian bureaucrat and politician. He served as the Vice Governor of North Sumatra from 1997 until 2003,Speaker of the North Sumatra Regional People's Representative Council from 2004 until 2008,and MP from 2009 to 2014 and from 2017 until his death.
The 2022 Indonesian student protests,also known as the 11 April demonstrations,were a series of protests led mostly by students throughout Indonesia. They were triggered by rumours regarding a delay of the 2024 election and proposals of amending the Constitution to allow President Joko Widodo to have a third term. On 18 April 2022 16:45 Central Indonesian Time,a three-storey building which included an Alfamart convenience store collapsed in Gambut district,Banjar Regency,South Kalimantan. As of 21 April 2022,the collapse resulted in 14 casualties including five deaths and search was still conducted by police and rescuers.
The Law on South Kalimantan province,officially Law Number 8 of 2022,is a law passed by the People's Representative Council of Indonesia regarding the existence of the province of South Kalimantan. The law is one of several laws passed with relatively minor changes to provide an updated legal basis for the existence of Indonesian provinces;previously,the legal standing for many Indonesian provinces was based on laws from the era of the United States of Indonesia. However,while other provinces' laws were passed uncontroversially without major change,South Kalimantan's province law was passed with a sudden change of the capital city from Banjarmasin to Banjarbaru. This change led to a court challenge from elements associated with Banjarmasin city,with consequent response from Banjarbaru city.
Negara Dipa was a Hindu kingdom in South Kalimantan that appears in Hikayat Banjar. It was located in Amuntai near modern-day Tabasan. It was also the predecessor of Negara Daha and Banjar Sultanate.
Mochamad Hasbi was an Indonesian army officer and politician who served as the Regent of Boyolali from 1984 until 1994 and the deputy speaker of the Central Java Regional People's Representative Council from 1999 until 2007.
