The title Hero of Labor (German : Held der Arbeit) was awarded by the German Democratic Republic for supporting the socialist economy, usually by increasing factory output or agricultural yields. It was instituted on 19 April 1950 and was limited to 50 awards per year. A cash prize of up to 10,000 Marks was linked to each award.

The Order of the Red Banner of Labour was an order of the Soviet Union established to honour great deeds and services to the Soviet state and society in the fields of production, science, culture, literature, the arts, education, sports, health, social and other spheres of labour activities. It is the labour counterpart of the military Order of the Red Banner. A few institutions and factories, being the pride of Soviet Union, also received the order. The Order of the Red Banner of Labour was the third-highest civil award in the Soviet Union, after the Order of Lenin and the Order of the October Revolution.

The title of Hero is presented by various governments in recognition of acts of self-sacrifice to the state, and great achievements in combat or labor. It is originally a Soviet-type honor, and is continued by several nations including Belarus, Russia, and Ukraine. It was also awarded to cities and fortresses for collective efforts in heroic feats. Each hero receives a medal for public display, special privileges and rights for life, and the admiration and respect of the nation. Some countries without Soviet connections also award Hero honours.

Alaksandar Iosifovich Dubko was the former chairman of the Grodno Regional Executive Committee. In 1960 graduated from the Grodno State Agrarian University with a degree in agronomy. Have worked in different positions in agrarian sector, was a director of one of the biggest agricultural companies in Grodno region. In 1994, he was a candidate for President of Belarus. He also served in the Belarus SSR Supreme Soviet and the USSR Supreme Soviet. He was awarded the titles of Hero of Socialist Labor and Hero of Belarus, however, the Hero of Belarus title was presented to him posthumously for valiant service to state and society.

The Hero of Labor is the highest title of honor in the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. It is awarded to individuals or collectives with outstanding achievements in labor. This includes supporting the objective of a strong country and an equitable, democratic, prosperous, and civilized society. Awardees are loyal to the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, and possess revolutionary virtues and qualities. It can be awarded to collectives for the same reasons that have maintained good internal unity, strong Party affiliations and mass organizations.

Labor Hero is one of the highest titles of honor of North Korea and the highest decoration of the country overall. The award was probably scheduled for establishment in the summer of 1950, but the Korean War postponed these plans. When the war had entered a phase of stalemate along the 38th parallel, the government had time to officially launch the decoration, originally under the name Korea Hero of Labor. 16 people were decorated Labor Heroes during the war and more since then. The decoration is based on its Soviet equivalent, Hero of Socialist Labour.

Kateryna Ivanivna Boloshkevich was a Ukrainian weaver and statesperson who was a weaver at the Zhytomyr flax mill of the Ministry of Light Industry of the Ukrainian SSR and an elected deputy of the ninth convocation of the Supreme Soviet of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. Previously, she worked at the Zhytomyr meat processing plant after she graduated from high school. Boloshkevich was a delegate to the 24th Congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, the 20th Congress of the Communist Party of Ukraine and was on the Central Audit Commission of the Communist Party of Ukraine. She was a two-time recipient of the Order of Lenin and got the Order of the Red Banner of Labour, the Hero of Socialist Labour and the "Hammer and Sickle" gold medal.
