Highland Peak is a prominent 10,936-foot-elevation (3,333 meter) mountain summit located in the Sierra Nevada mountain range, in Alpine County of northern California, United States.^[3] It is situated 3.5 miles east of Ebbetts Pass in the Carson-Iceberg Wilderness, on land managed by Humboldt–Toiyabe National Forest. Although it ranks as the 680th highest summit in California, it ranks 36th highest of those with at least 500 meters of topographic prominence.^[2] Also, there is no higher peak than Highland Peak to the north within the Sierra Nevada. Highland Peak has a subsidiary South Peak (10,824 ft/3,299 m), with one-half mile separation between summits.^[1] This subsidiary peak is listed as Rockshire Peak on many maps. The Pacific Crest Trail traverses the western foot of this mountain, providing an approach option.

History

This mountain's name was applied in 1878 by Lieutenant Montgomery M. Macomb during the Wheeler Survey.^[4] The name commemorates the short-lived Highland City, set on the high land between the Carson and Stanislaus watersheds.^[5] The mountain's name has been officially adopted by the United States Board on Geographic Names, and a brass USGS benchmark bearing the name was placed at the summit in 1956.^[3]

Climate

According to the Köppen climate classification system, Highland Peak is located in an alpine climate zone.^[6] Most weather fronts originate in the Pacific Ocean, and travel east toward the Sierra Nevada mountains. As fronts approach, they are forced upward by the peaks, causing them to drop their moisture in the form of rain or snowfall onto the range (orographic lift). Precipitation runoff from this mountain drains into tributaries of the East Fork Carson River.

The nearest higher neighbor is Mount Gabb, 1.75 miles (2.82 km) to the northeast, and Recess Peak is 2.2 miles (3.5 km) to the northwest. Carson Peak is a 10,908-foot-elevation mountain summit located in the Sierra Nevada mountain range, in Mono County of northern California, United States. It is situated in the Ansel Adams Wilderness, on land managed by Inyo National Forest. It is approximately 3.5 miles (5.6 km) southwest of the community of June Lake, 2.0 miles (3.2 km) south of Silver Lake, and 2.25 miles (3.62 km) northwest of San Joaquin Mountain, the nearest higher neighbor. Graveyard Peak ranks as the 535th-highest summit in California, and topographic relief is significant as the south aspect rises over 2,300 feet (700 meters) above Devils Bathtub in approximately one mile. It is two miles southeast of Silver Peak, five miles north of Lake Thomas A Edison, and approximately 13 miles (21 km) south of the community of Mammoth Lakes. It is situated in Kings Canyon National Park, on Monarch Divide which is west of the crest of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Mount Harrington is four miles to the west along the divide, and Kennedy Pass less than a mile east. Kennedy Mountain ranks as the 569th-highest summit in California, and topographic relief is significant as the northeast aspect rises 2,000 feet (610 meters) above Kennedy Canyon in approximately one mile.
