Home is a restaurant in Penarth, Vale of Glamorgan, Wales. It is owned by chef James Sommerin and run by Sommerin and his family.

Sommerin formerly ran the Michelin starred Restaurant James Sommerin on Penarth seafront [2] and, before that, the Michelin starred The Crown at Whitebrook in Monmouthshire. [3]

Description

Home is located at 1, Royal Buildings on Stanwell Road in Penarth town centre [4] and opened its doors on 18 August 2021. [2] It has blacked-out windows to create and intimate, immersive experience for customers, who also have to ring the front doorbell to enter. [2] Home is much smaller than Sommerin's previous restaurant on Penarth seafront. Neither does it allow diners to choose items from a menu, instead they are presented with a four-course lunch or an evening eight-dish taster menu. [2]

Home is run by Sommerin and his immediate family, with Sommerin and his daughter Georgia working in the kitchen. His wife Louise and daughter Angharad also work front of house in the restaurant. [2] [4]

Recognition

Six months after opening, Home appeared in the Michelin Guide and was awarded a Michelin Star. [5] A year later in February 2023 the restaurant was awarded three AA rosettes for culinary excellence. [6] Home came 25th on SquareMeal's 2022 UK top 100 list of restaurants. [7]

Television appearances

In the first episode of the Hairy Bikers television series The Hairy Bikers Go Local, first broadcast on BBC2 on 2 January 2023, the duo visit Home to try one of the Sommerins' dishes. [8]

Home appeared in BBC2's The Great British Menu , first broadcast on 15 February 2023, when Georgia Sommerin competed to cook a dish for a Paddington Bear-themed banquet. [9]

Hibiscus was a London restaurant which was owned and run by French chef Claude Bosi. It was opened in 2000 in Ludlow, Shropshire, and won its first Michelin star within a year, and a second in the 2004 Guide. In July 2006, Bosi and his wife Claire announced that they were to sell the location in Ludlow and move closer to London. The property was sold to Alan Murchison, and Bosi purchased a new site on Maddox Street in London. The restaurant closed in 2016.

The Whitebrook, formerly known as The Crown at Whitebrook, is a restaurant with rooms in Whitebrook, 6 miles (9.7 km) south-south-east of Monmouth, Monmouthshire, Wales, near the River Wye and the border with England. The building is thought to date from the 17th century and by the 19th century it was used as a roadside inn. Its restaurant was run by Chef Patron James Sommerin until 2013; it gained a Michelin star in 2007. It contains eight double rooms and a 2-acre (0.81 ha) garden. On 7 March 2013, it closed because of financial difficulties; at the time it had the longest held Michelin star in Wales. Critics praised the food under Sommerin, but have criticised the difficulty in finding the restaurant. It re-opened in October 2013 under new chef and owner Chris Harrod, and regained the Michelin star in 2014. Harrod serves a menu using locally produced meat and vegetables along with foraged ingredients such as charlock, hedge bedstraw and pennywort.

Kenny Atkinson is an English chef, who won Michelin stars at the restaurants St Martin's on the Isle, and Kenny Atkinson at the White Room within Seaham Hall. He has appeared on the BBC show Great British Menu, where he has twice been selected as the chef for courses at the final banquets. He was named Chef of the Year at the 2009 Catey Awards. In 2015 he was awarded a Michelin star for his own restaurant House of Tides in Newcastle upon Tyne.
