Contents

Horizon's Lord is designed to combat ATGMs, high caliber machine guns, light armored vehicles, and enemy snipers.

History

It is made by the Mayak company which is part of the state enterprise Ukroboronprom, [1] at the Mayak arms factory in Kyiv (not to be confused with the Mayak nuclear facility) under the direction of chief designer Alexander Gordeev.

Mayak was founded in 1924 and made tape recorders and other items.[ citation needed ] After the declaration of Ukraine's independence, the plant became Ukraine's leading enterprise in the production of communication and recording equipment.[ citation needed ] In 2015 Mayak began production of a new sniper rifle, the MCR Horizon's Lord.

Longest kill

The record for longest sniper kill (3.8 kilometres (2.4 mi)) was set in November 2023 by Viacheslav Kovalskyi, using a MCR Horizon's Lord. As of 2024 this remains the current world record. Kovalskyi was working for the Security Service of Ukraine in the Russo-Ukrainian War. [2]

Specifications

It can be chambered in 12.7x99mm NATO, 12.7x108mm, 14.5x114mm, 23x115mm, and its own caliber, 12.7x114mmHL. This caliber, 12.7x114mmHL, is a necked down 14.5x114mm created to have the capability of both anti-materiel and anti-personnel engagements.

The creation of this caliber came after multiple proposed cartridges failed to meet the requirements. The first was to use .416 Barrett or .408 CheyTac, both of which failed to meet the anti-materiel requirements. Although both are generally considered to excel at long range anti-personnel engagements, neither had anti-materiel bullet types available. 14.5x114mm was rejected for the opposite problem, that being its sub-par anti-personnel capabilities. This role would normally be filled by .50 BMG, however it didn't have enough velocity for the role.

Due to the difficulty of creating an entirely new cartridge and caliber, they repurposed two that had already been produced. By necking down the cartridge 14.5x114mm to accept 50 BMG, 12.7x114mmHL was created, with a muzzle velocity of 3,280 feet per second (1,000 m/s). MCR Horizon's Lord was also designed to be adaptable in comparison to other similar rifles. It can switch between the previously mentioned calibers on the field, sometimes only requiring a barrel change. (depending on which caliber being switched from and to). Unfolded, its length is 71.65 inches (182.0 cm), and 59.84 inches (152.0 cm) folded. Its weight is approximately 34 pounds (15 kg). [3] [4]

The .50 BMG, also known as 12.7×99mm NATO, and designated as the 50 Browning by the C.I.P., is a .50 in (12.7 mm) caliber cartridge developed for the M2 Browning heavy machine gun in the late 1910s, entering official service in 1921. Under STANAG 4383, it is a standard service cartridge for NATO forces. The cartridge itself has been made in many variants: multiple generations of regular ball, tracer, armor-piercing (AP), incendiary, and saboted sub-caliber penetrator rounds. The rounds intended for machine guns are made into a continuous ammunition belt using metallic links.

An anti-personnel weapon is a weapon primarily used to maim or kill infantry and other personnel not behind armor, as opposed to attacking structures or vehicles, or hunting game. The development of defensive fortification and combat vehicles gave rise to weapons designed specifically to attack them, and thus a need to distinguish between those systems and ones intended to attack people. For instance, an anti-personnel landmine will explode into small and sharp splinters that tear flesh but have little effect on metal surfaces, while anti-tank mines have considerably different design, using much more explosive power to effect damage to armored fighting vehicles, or use explosively formed penetrators to punch through armor plating.

An anti-materiel rifle (AMR) is a rifle designed for use against military equipment, structures, and other hardware (materiel) targets. Anti-materiel rifles are chambered in significantly larger calibers than conventional rifles and are employed to eliminate equipment such as engines and unarmored or lightly armored targets. Although not originally designed for use against human targets, the bullet weight and velocity of anti-materiel rifles gives them exceptional long-range capability even when compared with designated sniper rifles. Anti-materiel rifles are made in both bolt-action as well as semi-automatic designs.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Longest recorded sniper kills</span>

Reports regarding the longest recorded sniper kills that contain information regarding the shooting distance and the identity of the sniper have been presented to the general public since 1967. Snipers have had a substantial history following the development of long distance weaponry. As weapons, ammunition, and aids to determine ballistic solutions improved, so too did the distance from which a kill could be targeted. In mid-2017 it was reported that an unnamed Canadian special forces operator, based in Iraq, had set a new record of 3,540 m (3,871 yd), beating the record previously held by an Australian sniper at 2,815 m (3,079 yd). In November 2023, the record was once again broken by 58-year old sniper, Viacheslav Kovalskyi of the Security Service of Ukraine, who shot a Russian soldier from a distance of 3,800 m (4,156 yd) during the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
