Horizon: An American Saga [2] is a tetralogy of upcoming American epic Western films co-written, produced, directed by and starring Kevin Costner. The films will also star Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Luke Wilson and Thomas Haden Church. Four total films in the series have been greenlit, with the first having begun filming in August 2022. The second and third films began filming in May 2023.

Contents

First conceptualized by Costner in 1988, the films are planned to be released over several months and tell an overarching story of the American west prior to and after the American Civil War.

Set in pre- and post-American Civil War depicting the expansion of the American west. [3]

Cast

Production

Kevin Costner first commissioned Horizon as a single film in 1988, and later approached Walt Disney Pictures with the project after the release of his 2003 film Open Range . [3] It was announced in January 2022 that Costner was set to direct and produce the film in addition to starring. Casting began in February 2022. [4] In April, Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema joined the production to distribute. [5] In a June interview, Costner stated he plans to make four movies out of the premise, and was looking to cast over 170 speaking roles. [6] In August, Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Jamie Campbell Bower, Luke Wilson, Thomas Haden Church, Jena Malone, Alejandro Edda, Tatanka Means and Michael Rooker were cast in the film. [7] [8] [9] [10] Isabelle Fuhrman, Ella Hunt, Jeff Fahey and Tom Payne would be amongst numerous casting announcements made throughout September. Filming of at least the first installment began on August 29, 2022 in southern Utah, [7] concluding in November. [18] Filming of the second installment began by May 2023. [2]

Release

In a May 2023 interview, Costner expressed hope to have the first film released by Fall 2023, possibly debuting at the Venice Film Festival. [3]

Sequels

In June 2022, Costner stated he plans to make four Horizon films in total, shot back-to-back. [6] In November 2022, Costner confirmed that the first film had been completed, and that the second had been greenlit, set to be filmed in Spring 2023. [19] Production for the second film was commenced by April 2023, with Glynn Turman, Kathleen Quinlan & Giovanni Ribisi joining Kevin Costner, Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Ella Hunt, Will Patton, Luke Wilson, Isabelle Fuhrman and Thomas Haden Church who continue on from the first film, while director of photography J. Michael Muro, production designer Derek R. Hill, editor Miklos Wright and costume designer Lisa Lovaas also return. [20]

Killers of the Flower Moon is a 2023 American epic Western crime drama film directed and co-produced by Martin Scorsese, who co-wrote the screenplay with Eric Roth, based on the 2017 book of the same name by David Grann. Its plot centers on a series of Oklahoma murders in the Osage Nation during the 1920s, committed after oil was discovered on tribal land. The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio, who also serves as an executive producer, alongside Robert De Niro, Lily Gladstone, Jesse Plemons, Brendan Fraser, and John Lithgow. It marks the seventh collaboration between Scorsese and DiCaprio as well as the eleventh collaboration between Scorsese and De Niro.

Yellowstone is an American neo-Western drama television series created by Taylor Sheridan and John Linson that premiered on June 20, 2018, on Paramount Network. The series stars Kevin Costner, Luke Grimes, Kelly Reilly, Wes Bentley, Cole Hauser, Kelsey Asbille, and Gil Birmingham. The series follows the conflicts along the shared borders of the Yellowstone Ranch, a large cattle ranch, the Broken Rock Indian reservation, Yellowstone National Park and land developers. In May 2023, it was announced that the fifth season will be its last and be followed by an untitled sequel series. The first part of the fifth and final season premiered on November 13, 2022, with the second part premiering in late 2023.

Avatar 4 is an upcoming American epic science fiction film co-written, co-edited, co-produced and directed by James Cameron. It will be the sequel to the upcoming 2024 Avatar 3, and the fourth installment in the Avatar franchise. It will star Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldaña, among others from the original cast, reprising their roles. The screenplay is written by James Cameron and Josh Friedman. The film is scheduled to be released on December 18, 2026, by 20th Century Studios and is planned to be followed by a sequel, Avatar 5, in 2028.

Phase Six of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is a group of American superhero films produced by Marvel Studios based on characters that appear in publications by Marvel Comics. Phase Six features all of the Marvel Studios productions set to be released starting from late 2024 to mid-2026, with Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures distributing the films. The first film in the phase will be Deadpool 3, scheduled for release in November 2024. Kevin Feige produces every film in this phase, alongside producers Ryan Reynolds and Shawn Levy for Deadpool 3.
