Brønnøysund is a town and the administrative centre of Brønnøy Municipality in Nordland county, Norway. It is also a former municipality within Nordland county. The village of Brønnøysund originally was declared a ladested in 1923 which made it an independent municipality. After merging with Brønnøy in 1964, it lost its town status. Then in 2000, it once again received town status. The town lies along the coast and is often called "the coastal town in the middle of Norway." Brønnøysund is also the regional center of Southern Helgeland.

The 5.77-square-kilometre (2.23 sq mi) lake lies mostly in Bindal Municipality, but the far eastern part of the lake extends into the neighboring Brønnøy Municipality where it is known as Storvatnet. It flows out through a channel on the southwestern side of the lake and flows into the neighboring lake Eidevatnet.

Velfjord is a former municipality in Nordland county, Norway. The 600-square-kilometre (230 sq mi) municipality existed from 1875 until its dissolution in 1964. Velfjord municipality was centered around the Velfjorden in what is now Brønnøy Municipality. Most of the municipality is located on the mainland, but it also includes nearly 100 small islands, islet, and skjerries. The administrative centre was the village of Hommelstø at the innermost part of the fjord. Velfjord Church lies just west of Hommelstø.
Tosbotn or Tosbotnet is a village in the municipality of Brønnøy in Nordland county, Norway. The village is located at the end of the Tosenfjord arm of the Bindalsfjorden. The village is mostly a tourist center. Brønnøy District Court is a district court located in the town of Brønnøysund in Nordland county, Norway. The court serves the central part of the county which includes the municipalities of Bindal, Brønnøy, Sømna, Vega, and Vevelstad. The court is subordinate to the Hålogaland Court of Appeal. The court is led by the chief judge Rolf Selfors, who also leads the neighboring Alstahaug District Court and Rana District Court. This court employs a chief judge, one other judge, and four prosecutors.
