The Jiul de Vest ("Western Jiu", previously also known as Jiul Românesc) is a headwater of the river Jiu in Romania. [1] [2] At its confluence with the Jiul de Est in Iscroni, the Jiu is formed. [3] Its length is 54 km (34 mi) and its basin size is 496 km2 (192 sq mi). [2] The upper course of the river is also known locally as Câmpușelu.
Jiul simply means "the Jiu", appended by the definite article -l .

The Jiu is a river in southern Romania. It is formed near Petroșani by the confluence of headwaters Jiul de Vest and Jiul de Est.
The Siret or Sireth is a river that rises from the Carpathians in the Northern Bukovina region of Ukraine, and flows southward into Romania before it joins the Danube. It is 647 km (402 mi) long, of which 559 km (347 mi) in Romania, and its basin area is 44,811 km2 (17,302 sq mi), of which 42,890 km2 (16,560 sq mi) in Romania. Its average discharge is 250 m3/s (8,800 cu ft/s). In ancient times, it was named Hierasus.
The Putna is a right tributary of the river Siret in Vrancea County in Romania, in the historical region of Moldavia. It discharges into the Siret in Călienii Noi, near Vulturu.
The Teleajen is a left tributary of the river Prahova in southern Romania. Its source is at 1,754 m (5,755 ft) elevation in the Ciucaș Mountains, north of Roșu Peak and the locality of Cheia. Upstream from its confluence with the Gropșoarele in Cheia, it is also called Berea or Cheița. It flows through the Cheia hollow, by the towns of Vălenii de Munte and Boldești-Scăeni and the city of Ploiești. It discharges into the Prahova near Palanca. Its length is 122 km (76 mi) and its basin size is 1,656 km2 (639 sq mi).
The Aita is a right tributary of the river Olt in Romania. It discharges into the Olt in Aita Mare. Its length is 25 km (16 mi) and its basin size is 132 km2 (51 sq mi).
The Lotru is a right tributary of the river Olt in Romania. Its source is in the Parâng Mountains. It feeds the reservoirs Vidra, Malaia and Brădișor. It flows into the Olt in Golotreni, near the town Brezoi. It passes through the communes Voineasa, Malaia, and Brezoi. Its length is 83 km (52 mi) and its basin size is 990 km2 (380 sq mi).
The Gilort is a river in southern Romania, a left tributary of the river Jiu. The Gilort flows through the villages and towns Novaci, Bălcești, Bengești, Târgu Cărbunești, Jupânești, Turburea and Capu Dealului. Its length is 116 km (72 mi) and its basin size is 1,358 km2 (524 sq mi). It flows into the Jiu near Țânțăreni.
The Ghimbav is a left tributary of the river Dâmbovița in Romania. Its source is in the Leaota Mountains. It flows into the Dâmbovița upstream from Rucăr. Its length is 12 km (7.5 mi) and its basin size is 42 km2 (16 sq mi).
The Săcuieu is a left tributary of the river Crișul Repede in Romania. Its source is in the Apuseni Mountains. It discharges into the Crișul Repede near Bologa. Its length is 31 km (19 mi) and its basin size is 226 km2 (87 sq mi).
The Jiul de Est is a headwater of the river Jiu in Romania. Its source is in the Șureanu Mountains. At its confluence with the Jiul de Vest in Iscroni, the Jiu is formed. Its length is 29 km (18 mi) and its basin size is 468 km2 (181 sq mi).
The Ghimbășel is a left tributary of the river Bârsa in Romania. Its source is in the northern part of the Bucegi Mountains. Originally it discharged directly into the Olt, but much of its flow has been diverted into the Bârsa, another tributary of the Olt, near Colonia Bod. Its length is 67 km (42 mi) and its basin size is 533 km2 (206 sq mi). The former lower course of the Ghimbășel, downstream of this diversion, still exists and is used for the discharge of local inflows. It flows into the Olt north of Bod. Its length is 6 km (3.7 mi) and its basin size is 8 km2 (3.1 sq mi).
The Valea de Pești is a right tributary of the river Jiul de Vest in Romania. It flows into the Jiul de Vest near Câmpu lui Neag. The Valea de Pești Dam is built on this river. Its length is 11 km (6.8 mi) and its basin size is 32 km2 (12 sq mi).
The Săliște is a left tributary of the river Cibin in Romania. It discharges into the Cibin in Orlat. Its length is 32 km (20 mi) and its basin size is 220 km2 (85 sq mi).
The Izvorul Dorului is a right tributary of the river Prahova in Romania. It discharges into the Prahova in Sinaia. Its length is 16 km (9.9 mi) and its basin size is 33 km2 (13 sq mi).
The Lotrioara is a right tributary of the river Olt in Romania. Its source is in the Lotru Mountains. It discharges into the Olt in Lazaret. Its length is 25 km (16 mi) and its basin size is 120 km2 (46 sq mi).
The Pârâul de Câmpie is a right tributary of the river Mureș in Transylvania, Romania. It discharges into the Mureș in Luduș. Its length is 59 km (37 mi) and its basin size is 643 km2 (248 sq mi).
The Ozunca is a left tributary of the river Baraolt in Romania. It discharges into the Baraolt near Biborțeni. Its length is 18 km (11 mi) and its basin size is 96 km2 (37 sq mi). The name Ozunca is used mostly for the upper reach of the river, while the name Bățani is used for the lower reach.
The Șușița is a right tributary of the river Siret in Romania. It discharges into the Siret in Doaga. It flows through the following towns and villages, from source to mouth: Rucăreni, Dragosloveni, Rotileștii Mari, Câmpuri, Gogoiu, Răcoasa, Varnița, Repedea, Panciu, Satu Nou, Tișița and Doaga. The Târnava Mare is a river in Romania. Its total length is 223 km (139 mi) and its basin size is 3,666 km2 (1,415 sq mi). Its source is in the Eastern Carpathian Mountains, near the sources of the Mureș and Olt in Harghita County. It flows through the Romanian counties of Harghita, Mureș, Sibiu, and Alba. The cities of Odorheiu Secuiesc, Sighișoara, and Mediaș lie on the Târnava Mare. It joins the Târnava Mică in Blaj, forming the Târnava.
