Jerrilynn Patton (born July 30, 1987), [1] known as Jlin, is an electronic musician from Gary, Indiana. Patton began producing music in 2008, and received early attention for her 2011 track "Erotic Heat". Jlin's debut album, Dark Energy , was released in 2015 to critical praise. [2] Her follow-up Black Origami (2017) received further acclaim. [3]
Gary is a city in Lake County, Indiana, United States, 25 miles (40 km) from downtown Chicago, Illinois. Gary is adjacent to the Indiana Dunes National Park and borders southern Lake Michigan. Gary was named after lawyer Elbert Henry Gary, who was the founding chairman of the United States Steel Corporation. The city is known for its large steel mills, and as the birthplace of the Jackson 5 music group.
Dark Energy is the debut album of Indiana producer Jlin, released in 2015 by Planet Mu. It received acclaim from critics, and was named the best album of 2015 by The Wire and The Quietus.
Black Origami is the second album by Indiana producer Jlin, first issued for streaming on May 11, 2017 and on other formats by Planet Mu on May 19, 2017. Produced in a year from 2015 to 2016, it features collaborations with William Basinski, Holly Herndon, Fawkes, and Dope Saint Jude. Two tracks from previous Jlin extended plays appear on Black Origami: "Nandi" from Free Fall (2015) and "Nyakinya Rise" from Dark Lotus (2017).
Patton was raised in Gary, Indiana, United States. [4] Growing up, she was exposed to music through her parents, and her favorite artists were Anita Baker, Rachelle Ferrell, and Sade. She also heard footwork at an early age. [5] She briefly attended Purdue University as a math major. [4] As an adult, she supported herself by working at a steel mill, although she claims this did not substantively influence her work. [6] Patton began making her own music in 2008, and was inspired by her mother to pursue a unique sound. [5] She also received encouragement from figures such as DJ Rashad, who she communicated with online. [5]
Anita Denise Baker is an American singer-songwriter. Starting her career in the late 1970s with the funk band Chapter 8, Baker released her first solo album, The Songstress, in 1983. In 1986, she rose to stardom following the release of her platinum-selling second album, Rapture, which included the Grammy-winning single "Sweet Love". Although she has had some success in the mainstream R&B, pop, gospel and classical music scene, she is noted for her talents as a contemporary jazz singer. In contemporary jazz she is noted for her delivery, control, range, improvisational vocal percussion, scatting ability and whistle register.
Sade are an English band, formed in London in 1982 and named after their lead singer, Sade Adu. Three of their members were originally from Hull in the East Riding of Yorkshire. Their music features elements of soul, quiet storm, smooth jazz and sophisti-pop.
After making the track "Erotic Heat", she was hesitant to release it because it did not fit the conventional sound of a footwork song. [5] The track was ultimately released on Planet Mu's Bangs & Works, Vol. 2 compilation in 2011, which showcased Chicago juke and footwork artists and brought Jlin attention. The song was later used to accompany a 2014 Rick Owens fashion show. [5] She released her debut album Dark Energy in 2015 to critical acclaim. Planet Mu is an English electronic music record label run by Mike Paradinas. It was based in Worcester until March 2007, then moved to London and has recently relocated to Broadstairs, Kent. The label started out as a subsidiary of Virgin Records, until in 1998 Mike Paradinas set up the label independent of Virgin and was distributed through SRD.

Holly Herndon is an American composer, musician, and sound artist based in San Francisco, California. She is currently a doctoral student at Stanford University studying composition. Her music is primarily computer-based and often uses the visual programming language Max/MSP to create custom instruments and vocal processes. She has released music on the labels RVNG Intl. and 4AD. Her most recent full-length album Platform was released on May 19, 2015.
Also in 2017, Jlin was commissioned to compose the score for "AutoBIOgraphy", a new work by Company Wayne McGregor that has its premiere at Sadler's Wells in London in October 2017. [10]

A Seat at the Table is the third studio album by American singer-songwriter Solange. It was released on September 30, 2016, by Saint Records and Columbia Records. While recording the album, Knowles released an EP, titled True (2012) and launched her own record label named Saint Records. Writing for the album began as early as 2008, while the recording sessions took place from 2013 to June 2016.
