John Patteson may refer to:

John Patteson (bishop) English Anglican bishop and martyr

John Coleridge Patteson was an English Anglican bishop and martyr. A missionary to the South Sea Islands from 1855, Patteson was an accomplished linguist, learning 23 of the islands' more than 1,000 languages. In 1861, he was selected as the first Bishop of Melanesia. Patteson was killed on Nukapu in the Solomon Islands. He is commemorated in the Church of England on 20 September.

Nukapu island in Solomon Islands

Nukapu is one of the islands of the nation of Solomon Islands. It is in the Reef Islands group in Temotu Province; the easternmost province of the Solomons. The estimate terrain elevation above sea level is 15 metres.

Patteson Shoal is an outer reef in the Reef Islands, in the Solomon Islands province of Temotu. It is located about 50 km northeast of Nupani. The shoal is named for John Coleridge Patteson.

The Nukapu Expedition occurred between October 1871 and February 1872 and was a British punitive operation in response to the murder of Bishop John Coleridge Patteson by the natives of Nukapu. A Royal Navy warship was sent to the island and it sank a group of hostile war-canoes and landed men to attack a fortified village.
