Jyothika is an Indian actress who appears predominantly in Tamil films. [1] [2] She also acted in some Hindi, Malayalam, Telugu, and Kannada films. She debuted in Bollywood in the Hindi film Doli Saja Ke Rakhna (1997), directed by Priyadarshan. She starred in her first Tamil film Vaali (1999) and her first Telugu film Tagore (2003), opposite Chiranjeevi.She won one National Award, four Filmfare Awards, [3] six Tamil Nadu State Film Awards, two Cinema Express Awards, one South Indian International Movie Award, [4] International Tamil Film Award [5] and four Dinakaran Awards. She is also a recipient of the Kalaimamani Award. [6] She is regarded as one of the most prolific actresses in Tamil cinema. Jyothika left the industry at the peak of her career marrying Tamil actor Suriya on 11 September 2006, after being engaged in a relationship for several years, [17] and with whom she was paired in seven films. She made a comeback in the film 36 Vayadhinile (2015) where her performance was given good reviews and she received Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Actress and Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress – South for the movie. [13] [18] By Winning her fourth Best Actress Award at Tamil Nadu State Film Awards, she broke the record of winning most Best Actress Title till date with four as her record. [19] After the success of 36 Vayadhinile, she appeared in a series of women centric movies like Magalir Mattum (2017), Naachiyaar (2018), Kaatrin Mozhi (2018), Raatchasi (2019), and Ponmagal Vandhal (2020) [20] and also played a lead female role in Mani Ratnam's multi-starrer Chekka Chivantha Vaanam (2018). [18] In 2018, she appeared as the lead role of Chitra, a housewife to Arvind Swamy's character in Mani Ratnam's film Chekka Chivantha Vaanam . The first look was released on 21 August. The film has a worldwide release on 27 September 2018. [23] She was next seen as a housewife struggling to find her own identity in Kaatrin Mozhi , the Tamil remake of Vidya Balan's Tumhari Sulu . The project was directed by Radha Mohan and marked his reunion with Jyothika after Mozhi . The film narrates the story of an ambitious housewife who becomes a radio jockey for a late-night relationship advice show. The film was released worldwide in November 2018. The film's title was taken from a song from Mozhi, which was also directed by Mohan and featuring Jyothika in the lead.
Raatchasi (transl. Demoness) is a 2019 Indian Tamil-language social drama film, written and directed by Syed Gowthamraj, and produced by S. R. Prakashbabu and S. R. Prabhu under the banner of Dream Warrior Pictures. The film stars Jyothika, while Hareesh Peradi, Poornima Bhagyaraj, Sathyan, Nagineedu, and Aruldoss play supporting roles. Ponmagal Vandhal is a 2020 Indian Tamil-language legal drama film written and directed by J. J. Fredrick in his directorial debut, and produced by Suriya under his banner 2D Entertainment. The film stars Jyothika leading an ensemble cast including R. Parthiban, K. Bhagyaraj, Thiyagarajan, Pratap K. Pothan and Pandiarajan. The film featured music composed by Govind Vasantha, cinematography handled by Ramji and editing done by Ruben. It revolves around a rookie lawyer who leads to the reopening of a notorious 15-year-old case of a dead killer, alleged to have kidnapped and murdered young girls.
Udanpirappe is a 2021 Indian Tamil-language drama film written and directed by Era. Saravanan. Produced by Suriya and Jyothika via 2D Entertainment, it stars Jyothika, M. Sasikumar and Samuthirakani in lead roles. The film features music composed by D. Imman, while cinematography and editing were handled respectively by R. Velraj and Ruben. It was released for streaming through the digital platform Amazon Prime Video on 14 October 2021. The film received mixed to positive reviews from critics and was also Jyothika's 50th film.
Kaathal – The Core is a 2023 Indian Malayalam-language drama film directed by Jeo Baby and written by Adarsh Sukumaran and Paulson Skaria. Produced by Mammootty Kampany, the film stars Mammootty and Jyothika in lead roles. Sudhi Kozhikode, RS Panickar, Joji John, Muthumani and Chinnu Chandni played the other supporting roles.
Shaitaan (transl. Devil) is a 2024 Indian Hindi-language supernatural horror film directed by Vikas Bahl and produced by Devgn Films, Jio Studios and Panorama Studios. The film stars Ajay Devgn, R. Madhavan, Jyothika, Janki Bodiwala and Anngad Raaj. The music was composed by Amit Trivedi, while the cinematography and editing were handled by Sudhakar Reddy Yakkanti and Sandeep Francis. The story revolves around a family whose lives are disrupted when their eldest daughter falls under the spell of black magic cast by a stranger. The family then endeavors to stop the possession and uncover the stranger's motives.
