The Kamoshika (かもしか, lit. "Japanese serow") was a limited express train service in Japan operated by East Japan Railway Company (JR East) which ran between Akita and Aomori via the Ōu Main Line. [1] The service was discontinued from December 2010.

Service pattern

There were three services in each direction daily.

Rolling stock

Trains were normally formed of three-car 485 series EMUs based at Akita depot, sometimes strengthened to six cars during busy seasons. Green car (first class) accommodation was included in car 1. [1]

The trains were formed as follows, with car 1 at the Akita end. [2]

History

The Kamoshika was first introduced on 1 November 1986 as an express service operating between Kami-Suwa, Iida, and Nagano. This service was discontinued from the start of the revised timetable on 13 March 1988. [3]

The Kamoshika name was revived from March 1997 as a limited express service operating between Akita and Aomori, replacing the former Tazawa limited express service which ran between Morioka and Aomori via Akita before the Akita Shinkansen was opened. [4]

From the start of the revised timetable on 4 December 2010, the Kamoshika services were discontinued, replaced by Tsugaru services, formerly operating between Hachinohe and Hirosaki, which were rerouted to operate between Aomori and Akita. [5]

<i>Komachi</i> (train)

The Komachi (こまち) is a high-speed shinkansen service between Tokyo and Akita in Japan, operated by the East Japan Railway Company since March 1997. It is the only shinkansen service that runs on the Akita Shinkansen, and uses E6 series trains. Between Tokyo Station and Morioka, it couples with Tōhoku Shinkansen E5 series Hayabusa and E2 series for E3 series. After Morioka, the Komachi service continues along standard gauge tracks that were converted from narrow gauge. Because it then runs on tracks that have grade crossings, its maximum speed from Morioka to Akita is 130 km/h (80 mph), compared to 320 km/h (200 mph) on the Tohoku Shinkansen.

<i>Hayate</i> (train)

Hayate (はやて) is a high-speed Shinkansen service operated in Japan, on the Tohoku Shinkansen by East Japan Railway Company since 2002 and on the Hokkaido Shinkansen by JR Hokkaido since 26 March 2016. It operates as far as the northern terminus of Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto, and it is the second-fastest service on the Tohoku Shinkansen. These services were inaugurated with the opening of the Tohoku Shinkansen extension to Hachinohe on 1 December 2002.

<i>White Arrow</i>

The White Arrow, and later Super White Arrow were limited express train services operated by Hokkaido Railway Company on the Hakodate Main Line between the cities of Sapporo and Asahikawa in Hokkaido, Japan, between 1986 and 2007.

Hakuchō (train)

The Hakuchō and Super Hakuchō (スーパー白鳥) were Japanese limited express train services which operated between Shin-Aomori and Hakodate via the undersea Seikan Tunnel from December 2002 until March 2016. The services were operated by East Japan Railway Company and Hokkaido Railway Company respectively.

Kamome

Kamome (かもめ) is a limited express train operated by JR Kyushu in Japan. It operates between Hakata and Nagasaki on the Kagoshima Main Line and the Nagasaki Main Line. Kamome means seagull in Japanese.

<i>Hayabusa</i> (train)

The Hayabusa is a high-speed Shinkansen service operated by East Japan Railway Company and Hokkaido Railway Company between Tokyo and Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto in Japan since 26 March 2016. The name was formerly used for a limited express sleeping car service operated by JR Kyushu, which ran from Tokyo to Kumamoto, and was discontinued in March 2009.

Tsugaru (train)

The Tsugaru (つがる) is a limited express train service in Japan operated by East Japan Railway Company, which runs from Aomori to Hirosaki and Akita via the Tōhoku Main Line and Ōu Main Line.

<i>Inaho</i>

The Inaho (いなほ) is a limited express train service in Japan operated by East Japan Railway Company, which runs from Niigata to Sakata and Akita. The train runs along the Uetsu Main Line with views on the coast and Japanese Alps.

Shiosai

The Shiosai (しおさい) is a limited express train service in Japan operated by East Japan Railway Company. It runs from Tokyo and Shinjuku to Chōshi on the Bōsō Peninsula in Chiba Prefecture.

Hokuetsu

The Hokuetsu (北越) was a limited express train service in Japan formerly operated by Japanese National Railways (JNR) and later by East Japan Railway Company between Kanazawa and Niigata from 1970 until March 2015.

Akebono (train)

The Akebono (あけぼの) was a seasonal limited express sleeper train service operated by East Japan Railway Company, which ran from Ueno Station in Tokyo to Aomori, via the Joetsu Line, Uetsu Main Line and Ou Main Line. The journey took approximately 12 hours.

Suzuran

The Suzuran (すずらん) is a limited express train service operated by Hokkaido Railway Company between Muroran and Sapporo in Hokkaido, Japan. The current limited express service was introduced in July 1992, but the name was first used from 1956 for an express service operated by JNR between Hakodate and Sapporo. Suzuran is Japanese for Lily of the valley.

Akagi (train)

The Akagi (あかぎ) is a limited express train service in Japan operated by the East Japan Railway Company. It runs between Tokyo and Maebashi in Gunma Prefecture. Some trains run to or from Shin-Maebashi or Honjō.

Hamanasu (train)

The Hamanasu (はまなす) was an overnight express train service in Japan operated by Hokkaido Railway Company, which ran from Aomori to Sapporo via the Tsugaru Line, Kaikyō Line, Esashi Line, Hakodate Main Line, Muroran Main Line, and Chitose Line. The journey took approximately seven and a half hours. Following the withdrawal of the Ginga overnight express service between Tokyo and Osaka in 2008, the Hamanasu became the only locomotive-hauled express service in Japan. The service was discontinued in March 2016.

Ayame (train)

The Ayame was a limited express train operated by East Japan Railway Company between Tokyo, Kashima-Jingu and Chōshi via Sawara. First introduced in 1975, the last service ran on 13 March 2015.

Minakami (train)

The Minakami (水上) is a limited express train service in Japan operated by the East Japan Railway Company between Ueno in Tokyo and Minakami in Gunma Prefecture.

Lilac (train)

The Lilac is a limited express train service operated by Hokkaido Railway Company between Sapporo and Asahikawa in Hokkaido via the Hakodate Main Line since 4 March 2017. The Lilac train service name was also formerly used for express and limited express services operated by Japanese National Railways (JNR) and later by JR Hokkaido between 1963 and 2007.

<i>Hakutaka</i>

The Hakutaka (はくたか) is a high-speed shinkansen train service jointly operated by East Japan Railway Company and West Japan Railway Company between Tokyo and Kanazawa on the Hokuriku Shinkansen line in Japan. The shinkansen service was introduced on 14 March 2015, but the name was first used for a limited express service operated by Japanese National Railways (JNR) from 1965 until 1982, and later by JR West and Hokuetsu Express between 1997 and March 2015.

Kubikino

The Kubikino (くびき野) was a "Rapid" limited-stop train service in Japan operated by the East Japan Railway Company between Niigata and Arai on the Shinetsu Main Line in Niigata Prefecture from 2002 until March 2015.

Mt. Fuji (train)

The Mt. Fuji is a "Romancecar" limited express train operated by Odakyu Electric Railway between Shinjuku and Gotemba via the Odakyu Odawara Line and JR Central's Gotemba Line.
