Kath & Kim is an American sitcom version of the Australian television comedy series of the same name starring Selma Blair and Molly Shannon. The series premiered on NBC on October 9, 2008. The Australian version was created by its original stars, Jane Turner and Gina Riley, who also served as executive producers and consultants on this version which is co-produced through Reveille Productions and Universal Media Studios.

<i>Kath & Kim</i> Australian television comedy series

Kath & Kim is an Australian television situation comedy. The programme was created by its stars Jane Turner and Gina Riley, who play the title characters of suburban mother Kath Day-Knight, a cheery middle-aged woman and her self-indulgent daughter Kim Craig. The other main characters are Kath's boyfriend and, later, husband, the metrosexual Kel Knight, Kim's husband Brett Craig, and her lonely, overweight "second-best friend" Sharon Strzelecki. The series is set in Fountain Lakes, a fictional suburb of Melbourne, Victoria. It is primarily filmed in Patterson Lakes.

Selma Blair American actress

Selma Blair Beitner is an American actress. She played a number of small roles in films and on television before obtaining recognition for her leading role in the film Brown's Requiem (1998). Her breakthrough came when she starred as Zoe Bean on the WB sitcom Zoe, Duncan, Jack and Jane (1999–2000), and as Cecile Caldwell in the cult film Cruel Intentions (1999). Blair continued to find success with the comedies Legally Blonde (2001) and The Sweetest Thing (2002), and achieved international fame with her portrayal of Liz Sherman in the big-budget fantasy films Hellboy (2004) and Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008).

The first episode premiered in Australia on October 12, 2008, on the Seven Network. The show's Australian broadcast was cancelled after the second episode the following week. [1] The series was then pushed to a "graveyard" slot of 11 pm on Mondays and then pre-empted for the 2009 Australian Open after the first-run airing of episode 9, "Friends". Although the show initially gained modest ratings and mixed reviews from critics, [2] NBC picked up Kath & Kim for a full season order of 22 episodes on October 31, 2008. [3] On January 15, 2009, NBC cut the episode order from 22 to 17 episodes. [4] [5] The show's season finale aired on March 12, 2009. On May 19, 2009, NBC confirmed the series cancellation.

Molly Shannon American actress

Molly Helen Shannon is an American actress and comedian who was a cast member on Saturday Night Live from 1995 to 2001. In 2017 she won the Film Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the film Other People.

John Michael Higgins is an American actor, voice actor and comedian whose film credits include Christopher Guest's mockumentaries, the role of David Letterman in HBO's The Late Shift and a starring role in the American version of Kath & Kim. He portrayed Peter Lovett in the TV Land original sitcom Happily Divorced and provided the voice of Iknik Blackstone Varrick in The Legend of Korra. He also starred in the NBC sitcom Great News as Chuck Pierce for 2 seasons.

Mikey Day actor

Michael William Day is an American actor, comedian and writer. A native of Orange County, California, Day studied theater at the University of California, Los Angeles, and is a Groundlings alumnus. He went on to write for several television shows. He joined Saturday Night Live as a writer in its 39th season, became a featured player in its 42nd, and was promoted to a repertory player beginning with its 44th.

Production

Prior to being adapted to an American version, the first two seasons of the original version aired in the United States on Trio in 2004. After Trio folded it moved over to the Sundance Channel in early 2006.

Trio was an American cable and satellite television network.

On November 9, 2006, NBC announced a U.S. version of Kath & Kim. A pilot episode was produced by Reveille (the same studio that adapted Ugly Betty and The Office into U.S. hits) and NBC Universal, [6] with Riley and Turner serving as executive producers and consultants. Paul Feig was picked to direct the pilot episode. [7]

<i>Ugly Betty</i> American dramedy television series

Ugly Betty is an American comedy-drama television series developed by Silvio Horta, which was originally broadcast on ABC between 2006 and 2010. It revolves around the character Betty Suarez who, despite her lack of style, lands a job at a prestigious fashion magazine. The series is based on Fernando Gaitán's Colombian telenovela Yo soy Betty, la fea, which has had many other international adaptations. It was produced by Silent H, Ventanarosa, and Reveille Productions partnered with ABC Studios and executive produced by Salma Hayek, Silvio Horta, Ben Silverman, Jose Tamez, and Joel Fields. The pilot was filmed in New York; seasons one and two were filmed in Los Angeles and seasons three and four in New York City.

Paul Feig American actor, writer, film director

Paul Samuel Feig is an American actor, film director, producer and screenwriter. He is best known for directing films starring frequent collaborator Melissa McCarthy, including Bridesmaids (2011), The Heat (2013), Spy (2015), and Ghostbusters (2016). He also directed A Simple Favor (2018).

Originally, NBC wanted the series to air in the 2007–2008 fall television season, but decided against it. [8] The series was greenlighted after the network named Reveille founder Ben Silverman its new entertainment head. Silverman had been trying to bring this adaptation to American screens since 2004. [9] The show was ordered to series in early 2008. [10] The series aired in Australia on Channel 7 in mid-2008, but only aired the pilot and first episode until it was taken off and replaced by repeats of the original series due to popular demand. The full series was later aired in Australia.

Ben Silverman American television executive

Benjamin Noah Silverman is an American media executive. He is the Co-CEO and Chairman of the entertainment production company Propagate.

Casting

Molly Shannon was cast as Kath, [11] and Selma Blair as Kim. [12] Even though they are playing mother and daughter, Shannon is actually only eight years older than Blair: Shannon was born in 1964, Blair in 1972. Similarly, in the Australian version, Jane Turner (Kath) is only five months older than Gina Riley (Kim).

Several names have been changed for the US version. While Kath has retained her full name from the Australian series (in which she was known as Kath Day until her marriage to Kel at the end of Season 1) and Kim has retained her first name, Kim is known as Kim Day (rather than Kim Craig née Day) although in one episode Kath calls her by her full name in which Kim's original middle name of Diane was replaced with Crystal. The two other characters have different first names: Craig Baker (replacing Brett Craig) and Phil Knight (replacing Kel Knight), while the character of Sharon is entirely absent from the series, as Magda Szubanski objected to the casting. Maya Rudolph made the show's first guest appearance as Athena Scooberman in episode 8, "Sacrifice". [14] Pamela Anderson made the show's second guest appearance in episode 9, "Friends". [15]

Location settings

Originally, the series setting was supposed to be set in Fountain Valley, Arizona, a fictitious suburb of Phoenix, Arizona. There were suggestions of using the San Fernando Valley portion of Los Angeles, California, as the setting, after they started shooting episodes on June 13, 2008 in Los Angeles' West Hills neighborhood. Throughout the series there were references to geographical setting as Central Florida; Characters sometimes referenced short, sunny, afternoon rain downpours as are typical of Central Florida's climate.

These plans come under fire when her friend, who is trying to get in the good graces of a man working at the pound, brings over a small group of dogs when Craig's dog is in heat. Meanwhile, Kath finds that her plans for a flamboyant wedding are more expensive than she had thought. Kath has her eyes on an expensive 'pumpkin' carriage, but despite working overtime in her salon, she cannot earn the money needed to reserve the carriage. Phil on the other hand has been left at the altar more than once, and is reluctant to have a large wedding after the experiences. When Phil learns through Kim that Kath cannot afford her dream wedding, he arrives with the carriage, wearing a fairy tale styled tuxedo. The two profess that they want the kind of wedding the other one wants. Kim seems actually impressed by this, despite her dislike for Phil.

Reception

The show received negative criticism from viewers and television critics, [33] especially in the casting, [34] adjusting of the tone of the show [35] and even the show's costume design, [36] which has led to Blair firing back over the claims that it ruins the creativity of the original. [37] Early reviews of the pilot were poor, with the San Francisco Chronicle calling it "a contender for worst remake ever". [38]

Ratings

Despite negative reviews, the series debut's ratings were strong. The show finished third overall with a total of 7.5 million viewers. In the 18- to 49- and 18- to 34-year-old demographics it placed second and first respectively. [39] By its third episode, viewers had dropped to 4.99 million viewers, two thirds of the viewers from the pilot. [40]
