Khairkot District (Pashto : خیرکوټ ولسوالۍ), also known as Katawaz or Zarghun Shar District (Pashto : زرغون‌ښار ولسوالۍ, Dari : ولسوالی زرغون‌شهر), is a district of Paktika Province, Afghanistan. The district is within the heartland of the Sulaimankhel tribe of Ghilji Pashtuns. [1] The district capital is Khairkot town.

In 1998, the district had an estimated population of over 75,000. [2] However, by June 2004 the post-Taliban government separated off three new districts from the large Khairkot District. The new districts were Janikhel District, Yahyakhel District and Yusufkhel District. [3] [4] The district population in 2004 of the reduced district was 38,024. [3]

History

On 3 May 2020, the Taliban threw a hand grenade into a mosque in Khairkot District, injuring 20 worshippers who were offering the night prayer after having broken their Ramadan fast. [5] [6] [7] [8]

It borders Khakrez District to the west, Naish District and Oruzgan Province to the north, Zabul Province to the east and Daman and Arghandab districts to the south. The population is 38,400 (2006). The district center is located in the most southern part of the district. The district has been known as a stronghold of the Taliban forces.

Nika District District

Nika District, also known as Naka, is one of the most remote districts in Paktika Province, Afghanistan. It lies in a bowl-shaped valley and is only accessible by a few rocky river beds and a single dirt road, the latter of which is not passable in winter. The valley's economy is rudimentary and relies on wood cutting and subsistence farming. The district is within the heartland of the Zadran tribe of Pashtuns. The population in 2019 was estimated at 16,747. It was, until the US invasion 2001, a bastion for the Taliban, with mid-level and a few senior Taliban commanders spending time there, including Jalaluddin Haqqani, who has since taken up a prominent role in Al Queda and is rumored to have been one of Osama bin Laden's senior advisors.

Janikhel is a district in Paktika Province, in eastern Afghanistan. It was created in 2004 out of a part of Khairkot District.

Zarghūn Khār, Zarghūn Shār or Zarghūn Shār-e ‘Alī Kheyl, is a large irrigated area in Mohammad Agha District, Logar Province, eastern Afghanistan. It is west of the Pastah Plains and south of the Qal‘ah-ye Dowlat Plains, and supports the villages of Shah Qal‘ah, Mālī Khēl, Deh Mēnah, ‘Alī Khēl and Deh-e Manakah.
