The Khanna family is a prominent Punjabi Hindu family that originates from India. Members of the family have been involved in various fields, including business, finance, politics, philanthropy, sports, and sports administration. [1] [2] [3]
The Khanna family's history stems from the city of Lahore in the Punjab Province of British India, where they were a wealthy family as a result of the manufacturing business founded by Shanti Lal Khanna in 1939, during the British Raj. [4] [5] The family has Punjabi Hindu origins. [4] [6] During the Partition of India in 1947, the Khanna family fled the city and resettled in Delhi, India. The family initially lost their wealth in the Partition and had to rebuild in Delhi. [4]
The Khanna family's rise began in independent India after they settled in Delhi following the Partition. Family members first came to prominence from the 1950s onwards, when they started businesses, initially focusing on the manufacturing of various products, mainly in and from Delhi. [7] [8] [9] [10] From the 1960s, the success of the brothers Vipin Khanna and Vinod Khanna, sons of Shanti Lal Khanna, and their descendants grew the Khanna family's business, financial, and political reach. [1] [11] [12] [13] Members of the Khanna family are primarily based in Delhi, although some members also reside in various other locations within India and in other countries, and some members are not Indian citizens. The Khanna family initially rose to prominence due to the success of its members in business and finance, fields in which many family members continue to be involved and expand their interests in. Although various members of the family have jointly owned businesses with certain relatives at different times since the 1960s, they generally maintain separate business and financial interests. [19] [20] [21] The Khanna family has been noted for its power and influence, both within India and internationally, which they have successfully used to expand their business and financial interests, along with enhancing their network of connections. Since the 1960s, various members of the Khanna family have had interests in a wide array of industries, including commodities trading, general trading, mining, railways, real estate, agriculture, infrastructure, logistics, power, technology, hospitality, alcohol, consultancy, and manufacturing. [26] [27] [28] [29] [3] Beginning in the 1980s, some members of the Khanna family, starting with Vipin Khanna and followed by his son Arvind Khanna, have been particularly noted for their business interests in the arms and aerospace industries, and they have also allegedly exerted significant control over the approval of defence procurement contracts in India. From the 2000s, members of the Khanna family, beginning with Vipin Khanna and his youngest child Aditya Khanna, entered the financial services industry by co-founding an investment bank that included an asset management division. [32] Aditya Khanna later founded his own investment bank and investment company, and maintained ownership interests in private equity asset management companies. [33] Other members of the family have also been involved in investing, fundraising, and providing investment advisory services. [34]
From the 1980s onwards, some members of the family have been involved in sports. In professional sports, Navin Khanna, son of Vipin Khanna, is a former professional polo player who played a significant role in promoting polo in India through financial contributions; Arvind Khanna is a former golfer who also helped other professional golfers financially; and Rajeshwari Kumari, the daughter of Vinita Singh (née Khanna) and the granddaughter of Vipin Khanna, is an Olympic-level trap shooter and won a silver medal in the 2022 Asian Games. The family has also been involved in the sports industry. From 1997 to 2006, Arvind Khanna's Tiger Corporation joint venture company, Tiger Sports Marketing managed the Indian Golf Tour. [39] In 2006, Tiger Sports Marketing established the first Professional Golf Tour of India. [40] [41] Aditya Khanna was a co-founder of Punjab Kings, which was known at the time as Kings XI Punjab, an Indian Premier League cricket team founded in 2008, and Arvind was also a co-owner of the team. Members of the family, along with their close and extended relatives, have held positions in sports administration. Arvind Khanna served as the president of the Professional Golfers Association of India, president of the Fencing Association of India, and as the Secretary-General of the Punjab Olympic Association. [44] [45] [46] Vinita Singh's husband, Randhir Singh, has been a member of the International Olympic Committee, is serving as the Acting President of the Olympic Council of Asia, and has also held other positions in sports administration. [47] [48] Ravi Khanna, who was married to Amrit Kumari Khanna, and Vipin Khanna, who was married to Naginder Kumari Khanna, shared a father-in-law, Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala, one of the co-founders of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the national governing body of cricket in India. Various members of the Khanna family have been involved in philanthropy and social work. Arvind Khanna founded the non-governmental organisation (NGO) Umeed Foundation in 1997. [51] The Umeed Foundation is one of Punjab's largest NGOs and is involved in healthcare, employment generation, and social and economic empowerment initiatives. [52] [53] [54] Rajesh Khanna, the youngest son of Vinod Khanna, and his wife, Priya Khanna (née Mehra), serve on the board of the Mehra Foundation, which was founded by Priya Khanna's grandfather, Ram Gopal Mehra, in 1968. [55] The Mehra Foundation is involved in healthcare, education, academia, and scholarship initiatives. [56]
Aditya Khanna is involved with a broad spectrum of Indian and global NGOs, and is on the advisory board of the United Nations’ UNAIDS Health Innovation Exchange. [57] Sundeep Khanna, eldest son of Vinod Khanna, is a member of Rotary International and served as the President of the Rotary Club Delhi Garden City. [58] [59]

The Kapoor family is a prominent Indian show business family with at least 4 generations of the family over 95 years being active in the Hindi film industry. Numerous members of the family, both biological and those who have married into the family, have had prolific careers as actors, film directors and producers. "The Pioneer" founder of the dynasty was "The Patriarch", Prithviraj Kapoor, who was the first member of family to begin acting in movies with his 1929 debut film Be Dhari Talwar. He was a pioneer of Indian theatre and the founding member of Indian People's Theatre Association (IPTA). His son Raj Kapoor was the most influential actor and director in Hindi cinema. The genesis generation or the earliest linear generation of the Kapoor family tree to ever act in the films was Prithviraj Kapoor's father, Basheshwarnath Kapoor, who debuted as actor in 1951 film Awaara, which was produced, directed and starred in lead role by his grandson Raj Kapoor.
Arvind Kejriwal is an Indian politician, activist and former bureaucrat, who is serving as the 7th and current Chief Minister of Delhi since 2015, after his first term in the post from 2013 to 2014. In 2020, he co-founded Faarms, an Indian technology company, which merged with Connect India E-Commerce Services in 2024 to form Bharat Supply, a logistics technology, e-commerce and financial technology company. In 2023, Khanna became a partner at Ethiopotash, a company that mines sulphate of potash in Ethiopia.
Navin Khanna is an Indian businessman and former polo player. Khanna's business interests are in the commodities, alcohol, food and drinks industries. In his business career, he has facilitated the import of commodities to India for a diverse range of foreign companies. Khanna's name appeared in the Offshore Leaks report that was published by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists in 2013. Khanna has been a noted polo player and contributed towards growing the popularity of the sport in India.
Shanti Lal Khanna was an Indian businessman and doctor. Khanna was born in the Punjab Province, British India. He initially established a dental practice before founding a business in Lahore with interests in the travel and agriculture industries. In 1939, Khanna founded a manufacturing company that became the sole authorized manufacturer of weights and measures in the Punjab Province.
