The KiHa 40 series (キハ40系, Kiha-yonjū-kei) is a diesel multiple unit (DMU) train type introduced by Japanese National Railways (JNR) in 1977 and operated by all of the Japan Railways Group companies on suburban and rural services in Japan. [2] It also served in other private railway companies in Japan since 2017 following the removal of service which have been pulled out by Japan Railways group and also served in overseas operations in Myanmar since 2011.

Overview

The KiHa 40 series diesel multiple unit was introduced in 1977 by JNR to replace ageing KiHa 10 series DMUs on suburban and rural services nationwide. [3] A total of 888 vehicles were built between 1977 and 1982, broadly divided into three main types: KiHa 40, KiHa 47, and KiHa 48. These were subdivided as shown below, with further variants and modifications made later in their lives by the various JR Group companies. [1]

JR Hokkaido

Following the privatization and splitting of JNR in April 1987, JR Hokkaido received a total of 157 KiHa 40 series vehicles (150 KiHa 40s and 7 KiHa 48s). As of 1 April 2010, JR Hokkaido operates 153 KiHa 40 series vehicles, classified as follows. [1]

JR East

Following the privatization and splitting of JNR in April 1987, JR East received a total of 219 KiHa 40 series vehicles (117 KiHa 40s, 28 KiHa 47s, and 74 KiHa 48s). As of 1 April 2010, JR East operates 159 KiHa 40 series vehicles, classified as follows. [1] KiHa 48 502 and KiHa 48 1512 were derailed and badly damaged by the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami on 11 March 2011, and were withdrawn.

JR Central

Following the privatization and splitting of JNR in April 1987, JR Central received a total of 59 KiHa 40 series vehicles (14 KiHa 40s, 5 KiHa 47s, and 40 KiHa 48s). By April 2010, JR Central operated 59 KiHa 40 series vehicles, classified as follows. [1] These were withdrawn by 2016.

JR-West

Following the privatization and splitting of JNR in April 1987, JR-West received a total of 257 KiHa 40 series vehicles (63 KiHa 40s, 189 KiHa 47s, and 5 KiHa 48s). As of 1 April 2010, JR-West operates 255 KiHa 40 series vehicles, classified as follows. [1]

JR Shikoku

Following the privatization and splitting of JNR in April 1987, JR Shikoku received a total of 53 KiHa 40 series vehicles (11 KiHa 40s and 42 KiHa 47s). As of 1 April 2010, JR Shikoku operates 43 KiHa 40 series vehicles, classified as follows. [1]

Following the privatization and splitting of JNR in April 1987, JR Kyushu received a total of 142 KiHa 40 series vehicles (36 KiHa 40s and 106 KiHa 47s). As of 1 April 2010, JR Kyushu operates 140 KiHa 40 series vehicles, classified as follows. [1]

Nishikigawa Railway

In 2017, 1 KiHa 40-1009 diesel carriage was taken over by Nishikigawa Railway, that ended operation on the Karasuyama Line by JR East in March 2017, the former diesel train is remodeled in retro style, and started operation on September 16 of the same year. [4]

Kominato Railway

2 KiHa 40 carriages (KiHa 40-2021 and KiHa 40-2026), which ended operation on the Tadami Line in March 2020, were transferred in May 2020 with the Tohoku livery. [5] [6]

Overseas operations

A large fleet of former KiHa 40 series cars from JR East, JR Hokkaido, JR Shikoku, and JR Central were shipped to Myanmar between 2011 and 2016. A total of 48 diesel cars (including KiHa 40, KiHa 47, & KiHa 48) have been shipped to Myanmar for overseas operations. [7] The cars are used on the Yangon Circular Railway.

KiHa E200 Japanese train type

The KiHa E200 (キハE200形) is a single-car hybrid diesel multiple unit (DMU) train type operated by East Japan Railway Company on the Koumi Line in Japan. Three cars were delivered in April 2007, entering revenue service from 31 July 2007.

KiHa 25 Japanese diesel multiple unit train type

The KiHa 25 (キハ25形) is a diesel multiple unit (DMU) train type operated by the Central Japan Railway Company on local and rapid services in Japan, since March 2011. Following electrification of the Taketoyo Line in 2015, they replaced KiHa 40 series DMUs on the Takayama and Taita Lines.

The KiHa 100 and 110 series (キハ100・110系) are diesel multiple unit (DMU) trains operated since 1990 by East Japan Railway Company on non-electrified rural lines in Japan.

Karasuyama Line

The Karasuyama Line is a railway line in Tochigi Prefecture, Japan, owned and operated by East Japan Railway Company. It connects Hōshakuji in the town of Takanezawa with Karasuyama in Nasukarasuyama.

The KiHa 150 (キハ150形) is a single-car diesel multiple unit operated by Hokkaido Railway Company in Japan.

KiHa 160 Japanese train type

The KiHa 160 (キハ160形) was a single-car diesel multiple unit (DMU) train operated by Hokkaido Railway Company on the Hidaka Main Line in Japan. A single car was built in 1997 by Niigata Tekko to replace the KiHa 130 DMU car withdrawn due to collision damage sustained in a level crossing accident in January 1996. From 2007, the unit was rebuilt as an experimental hybrid car, branded "Inno Tech Train", before being finally withdrawn in fiscal 2013.

KiHa 261 series Japanese train type

The KiHa 261 series (キハ261系) is a tilting diesel multiple unit (DMU) train type operated by Hokkaido Railway Company on limited express services in Hokkaido, Japan, since 2000.

KiHa 181 series Japanese train type

The KiHa 181 series was a diesel multiple unit (DMU) train type operated in Japan on limited express services between 1968 and 2010. Initially introduced by Japanese National Railways (JNR), the trains were later operated by West Japan Railway Company (JR-West) and Shikoku Railway Company following privatization in 1987.

Resort Shirakami

The Resort Shirakami is a limited-stop "Rapid" service operated by the East Japan Railway Company as a sightseeing train along the scenic coastal Gonō Line in the north of Japan since March 1997.

KiHa 52 Japanese train type

The KiHa 52 is a Japanese Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) type formerly operated by Japanese National Railways (JNR), JR Group companies such as JR East, JR West, JR Shikoku & JR Kyushu; and later by the private operator Isumi Railway based in Chiba, Japan, by overseas operators such as Myanmar Railways in Myanmar, and PNR in the Philippines.

The KiHa 59 series (キハ59系) is a diesel multiple unit train type operated by Japanese National Railways and then later operated by JR Hokkaido, JR West, and JR East between 1985 and 2010, and by the Philippine National Railways (PNR) on the Metro South Commuter and Isarog Express lines since 2012. It is a reconditioned diesel train remodeled from aging JNR-Era rolling stocks converted from KiHa 56, 28 & 58 units for conversion into chartered-type trains across Japan.

KiHa 285 series Japanese train type

The KiHa 285 series (キハ285系) was a tilting diesel multiple unit (DMU) train type developed by Hokkaido Railway Company, originally intended for use on limited express services in Hokkaido, Japan. One three-car trainset was completed in September 2014 by Kawasaki Heavy Industries in Kobe, but plans to construct any further KiHa 285 series trains were cancelled the same month, and the trainset built was scrapped without entering revenue service.

South Hokkaido Railway Company

The South Hokkaido Railway Company is a third-sector railway company based in Hakodate, Hokkaido, Japan.

KiHa 35 Diesel multiple unit train type

The KiHa 35 series (キハ35), along with the similar KiHa 30 and KiHa 36 series, are Japanese diesel multiple unit (DMU) train types formerly operated by the Japanese National Railways (JNR) and JR Group of companies, and later operated by the private railway operators Kanto Railway and Mizushima Rinkai Railway. They were built from 1961 until 1966, and were widely used around Japan. Most units were withdrawn in 2012 with the exception of those used by private railways, which remained in service. Some were later operated by Philippine National Railways on Bicol Commuter Train since 2015, and on Metro South Commuter services since 2017.

The KiHa 01 series and the related KiHa 02 (キハ02) and KiHa 03 (キハ03) were railbus types operated by Japanese National Railways (JNR) from 1954 until 1969.

KiHa 38 Diesel multiple unit train type

The KiHa 38 (キハ38) is a Japanese diesel multiple unit (DMU) train type introduced by the Japanese National Railways (JNR) in 1986. These are converted from ageing KiHa 35's to come up for the modernization through conversion into a new rolling stock before it was privatized in 1987.
