Accra is the capital and largest city of Ghana, located on the southern coast at the Gulf of Guinea, which is part of the Atlantic Ocean. Accra covers an area of 225.67 km2 (87.13 sq mi) with an estimated urban population of 4.2 million as of 2020. It is organized into 12 local government districts – 11 municipal districts and the Accra Metropolitan District, which is the only district within the capital to be granted city status. "Accra" usually refers to the Accra Metropolitan Area, which serves as the capital of Ghana, while the district under the jurisdiction of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly is distinguished from the rest of the capital as the "City of Accra". In common usage, however, the terms "Accra" and "City of Accra" are used interchangeably.
The Districts of Ghana are second-level administrative subdivisions of Ghana, below the level of region. There are 261 local metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies.
The Greater Accra Region has the smallest area of Ghana's 16 administrative regions, occupying a total land surface of 3,245 square kilometres. This is 1.4 per cent of the total land area of Ghana. It is the second most populated region, before the Ashanti Region, with a population of 5,455,692 in 2021, accounting for 17.7 per cent of Ghana's total population.

Originally it was formerly part of the then-larger and first Akuapim South District in 1988, which it was created from the former Akuapim District Council; until it was elevated to municipal district assembly status to become Akuapim South Municipal District, with Nsawam as its capital town. However on 6 February 2012, the northeast part of the district was split off to create a new Akuapim South District, with Aburi as its capital town; thus the remaining part has been renamed as Nsawam Adoagyire Municipal District, with Nsawam as its capital town. ZanetorAgyeman-Rawlings (Dr.) is Ghanaian medical doctor and politician who is the eldest daughter of the 1st President under the 4th Republic of Ghana Jerry Rawlings (1993–2001) and former first lady Nana Konadu Agyeman (1993–2001). The municipality is located in the central part of Greater Accra Region and has La as its capital town.

The municipality is located in the western part of Greater Accra Region and has Ofankor as its capital town.
Kpone-Katamanso Municipal District is one of the twenty-nine districts in Greater Accra Region, Ghana. Originally it was formerly part of the then-larger Tema Municipal District, which was created from the former Tema District Council, until the eastern portion of the district was split off to create Kpone-Katamanso District on 28 June 2012, which was established by Legislative Instrument (L.I.) 2031; thus the remaining part has been retained as Tema Metropolitan District. However on 15 March 2018, it was later elevated to municipal district assembly status to become Kpone-Katamanso Municipal District, which was established by Legislative Instrument (L.I.) 2271. The municipality is located in the central part of Greater Accra Region and has Kpone as its capital town.

Originally it was formerly part of the defunct Ledzokuku-Krowor Municipal District on 29 February 2008, until part of the district was split off to create Krowor Municipal District on 15 March 2018; thus the remaining original part has been renamed as Ledzokuku Municipal District. The municipality is located in the central part of Greater Accra Region and has Nungua as its capital town.
