The 3DO Interactive Multiplayer is a 32-bit home video game console developed by The 3DO Company and designed by New Technologies Group, released in North America by Panasonic first on October 4, 1993. [1] It was the first programmable console developed under the 3DO brand and the only one to be officially released on the market. The following list contains all of the known games released for the 3DO platform as well as aftermarket (homebrew) titles and arcade games that used the 3DO hardware.

Contents

Unveiled at the May's 1992 Summer Consumer Electronics Show, hosting a number of cutting-edge technologies and highly promoted during launch including being named Time magazine's "1993 Product of the Year", the 3DO Interactive Multiplayer is unique from all fifth generation consoles in that its technical specifications could be licensed by third parties such as GoldStar (now LG Corp) and Sanyo for manufacturing while The 3DO Company would collect a royalty on each console sold and on each game published. [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] The system was released to compete with 16-bit consoles such as the Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo Entertainment System and other systems such as the Amiga CD32, Atari Jaguar, Philips CD-i and later in its life cycle the PlayStation and Sega Saturn. The 3DO struggled to achieve a substantial success during most of its life and by late 1996, the platform and game development for it were discontinued. [7] [8] A total of more than 200 games were developed and released for the console during its official commercial run. Originally released at US$699.99, [9] later 3DO models were less expensive to manufacture than the launch unit and were sold for considerably lower prices. [10] [11] Around 2 million units were sold in total. [12] A successor, the Panasonic M2, was slated for release but its launch was aborted. [13]

Commercially released games

There are 251 [lower-alpha 1] officially released 3DO Interactive Multiplayer games on this list.

Part of the fifth generation of video game consoles, it competed with the 16-bit Sega Genesis, the Super NES and the 32-bit 3DO Interactive Multiplayer that launched the same year. Powered by two custom 32-bit processorsTom and Jerryin addition to a Motorola 68000, Atari marketed it as the world's first 64-bit game system, emphasizing its 64-bit bus used by the blitter. The 3DO Company, also known as 3DO, was an American video game company. It was founded in 1991 by Electronic Arts founder Trip Hawkins, in a partnership with seven other companies. After 3DO's flagship video game console, the 3DO Interactive Multiplayer, failed in the marketplace, the company exited the hardware business and became a third-party video game developer. It went bankrupt in 2003 due to poor sales of its games. Its headquarters were in Redwood City, California, in the San Francisco Bay Area.

3DO Interactive Multiplayer Home video game console

The 3DO Interactive Multiplayer, also referred to as simply 3DO, is a home video game console developed by The 3DO Company. Conceived by entrepreneur and Electronic Arts founder Trip Hawkins, the 3DO was not a console manufactured by the company itself, but a set of specifications, originally designed by Dave Needle and RJ Mical of New Technologies Group, that could be licensed by third parties. Panasonic produced the first models in 1993, and further renditions of the hardware were released afterwards by GoldStar, Sanyo, Creative Labs, and Samsung Electronics in 1997.

Atari Games American arcade game developer

Atari Games Corporation, known as Midway Games West Inc. after 1999, was an American producer of arcade games. It was formed in 1985 when the coin-operated arcade video game division of Atari, Inc. was transferred by Warner Communications to a joint venture with Namco. It was one of several successor companies to use the name Atari. The company developed and published games for arcades and across consumer gaming consoles such as the Commodore 16, Commodore 64, Game Boy, Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) and other platforms using the Tengen label. Some of the games Atari had developed include Tetris, Road Runner, RoadBlasters and Primal Rage. After Time Warner reassumed full ownership in 1994, the company was sold to WMS Industries in 1996, and became part of Midway Games when that company was spun-off by WMS in 1998. It ceased operations in 2003 and its former assets were sold back to Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment in 2009 following Midway's bankruptcy.

Shinobi (1987 video game) 1987 video game

Shinobi (忍) is a side-scrolling hack and slash video game produced by Sega, originally released for arcades on the Sega System 16 board in 1987. The player controls ninja Joe Musashi, to stop the Zeed terrorist organization from kidnapping students of his clan.

The fifth generation era refers to computer and video games, video game consoles, and handheld gaming consoles dating from approximately October 4, 1993, to March 23, 2006. For home consoles, the best-selling console was the Sony PlayStation, followed by the Nintendo 64, and then the Sega Saturn. The PlayStation also had a redesigned version, the PSone, which was launched on July 7, 2000.

Wayne Gretzkys 3D Hockey 1996 video game

Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey is a video game developed and published by Atari Games for the arcade in 1996. A port for the Nintendo 64 console was released almost simultaneously with the arcade version, on November 15, 1996, making it the first-ever 4-player game for the Nintendo 64, beating Mario Kart's Japanese release by more than a month. The game was followed by a sequel, Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey '98.

The Panasonic M2 is a video game console platform developed by 3DO and then sold to Matsushita, a company known outside Japan by the brand Panasonic. Primal Rage 1994 arcade video game

Primal Rage is a fighting game developed and released by Atari Games to arcades in 1994. The game takes place on a post-apocalyptic version of Earth called "Urth". Players control one of seven large beasts that battle each other to determine the planet's fate. Matches feature many of the conventions of fighting games from the era, including special moves and gory finishing maneuvers. Ports were released for home consoles and personal computers. Efforts to perfectly emulate the arcade original have been unsuccessful due to the use of an unusual copy protection method. Toys, comics, a novel and other merchandise tie-ins were produced. More than 1.5 million copies of the game were sold.
