Doctors is a British medical soap opera which began broadcasting on BBC One on 26 March 2000. [1] Set in the fictional West Midlands town of Letherbridge, the soap follows the lives of the staff and patients of the Mill Health Centre, a fictional NHS doctor's surgery, as well as its sister surgery located at a nearby university campus. The following is a list of characters that first appeared in Doctors in 2010, by order of first appearance. All characters are introduced by the programme's executive producer, Will Trotter. Charlie Bradfield (Philip McGough) makes his first appearance in January, with Elaine Cassidy (Janet Dibley) joining in August. Homeless man Ed Harman (Chris Reilly) arrives in October. Ag Penrose (Lynda Baron), the aunt of Rob Hollins (Chris Walker), begins appearing in November and in December, Barry Bamford (David Gant) debuts as a friend of Julia's. Additionally, multiple other characters appeared throughout the year.

Charlie Bradfield

Charlie Bradfield, portrayed by Philip McGough, first appeared on 5 January 2010 and made his final appearance on 23 September 2010. Charlie is disliked at the Mill Health Centre due to his sexist, homophobic and racist views. When he begins working there, he bullies colleague Simon Bond (David Sturzaker) for being gay, which contributes to Simon having a breakdown. Charlie's former friend Heston Carter (Owen Brenman) tries to defend Charlie's behaviour at first, but when he sees it for himself, Heston is appalled. It is revealed that at his former workplace, he sexually assaulted a receptionist and blackmailed both her and the practice manager to stay quiet. Under the influence of Lyme disease, Julia Parsons (Diane Keen) mistakes Charlie for her ex-husband and Charlie takes advantage of her state by having sex with her. When it is discovered, Heston punches him and Charlie is thrown out by his wife. He is then dismissed from the Mill and reported to the medical board.

On his BBC profile, it noted that Charlie's arrival in Letherbridge made an impact, but not a positive one. He was billed as an "unashamedly unreconstructed man" who speaks his mind, regardless of the consequences that follow. The profile alluded that Charlie's homophobic bullying of Simon led to Simon's eventual breakdown and that Charlie's firing was "comeuppance" for the character. [2] For his portrayal of Charlie, McGough received a nomination for Villain of the Year at the British Soap Awards. [3]

Elaine Cassidy

Dr. Elaine Cassidy, portrayed by Janet Dibley, made her first appearance on 31 August 2010 and made her final appearance on 28 September 2012. [4] [5] [6] In September 2012, the character was involved in a week of BBC Red Button episodes focusing on the return of her former lover and murderer Harrison Kellor (James Larkin), who changes his plea in Lauren Porter's (Alexis Peterman) murder case. [7] Not long after the announcement of the spin-off episodes, Daniel Kilkelly of Digital Spy confirmed that Dibley's character Elaine would leave Doctors at the conclusion of the Harrison storyline. [8] In 2010, Dibley was longlisted for the British Soap Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of Elaine. [9] [10] She received another nomination for the award in 2011. [11] [12] Andrew Liddle of The Yorkshire Times branded Elaine a "memorable" character. [13]

Ed Harman

Ed Harman, portrayed by Chris Reilly, first appeared on 15 October 2010 and made his final appearance on 13 May 2011. He is homeless, suffers from mental illness and is a former soldier, having fought in Afghanistan. In 2011, he tries to kill Heston Carter (Owen Brenman), but Elaine Cassidy (Janet Dibley) hits him over the head with a fire extinguisher. Ed ends up in hospital, and he is visited by Elaine every day. After he was released from hospital, he went to live with Elaine.

Ag Penrose

Agatha 'Ag' Penrose, portrayed by Lynda Baron, first appeared on 9 November 2010 and made her last regular appearance on 12 December 2010. Ag returned for an episode in 2011, as well as an episode in 2014. It becomes known that she is not liked by the female members of the Hollins family; Imogen (Charlie Clemmow) and Karen (Jan Pearson), but is very popular with her nephew, Rob (Chris Walker) and great-nephew Jack (Nicholas Woodman). She frequently attacks Karen and Imogen with her rude comments, but they bite their tongues as Rob and Ag are very close. Ag often mentions how bad a father Billy was to Rob.

Barry Bamford

Barry Bamford, portrayed by David Gant, first appeared on 17 December 2010 and returned on 15 October 2012, both for one episode. Barry appears when Julia Parsons (Diane Keen) sees him on the streets, homeless. Julia helps Barry by offering him and place in her garden at her house, which he accepts. In October 2012, Barry re-appears, expecting to see Julia. [14] However, Julia is in Wales, so Heston Carter (Owen Brenman) house sits Julia's house and is surprised to find Barry in the garden. [14] Barry is ill, so Heston persuades Barry to go to the hospital and get checked, which he does. [14] Digital Spy described him as "ridiculously stubborn" and "eccentric", as did the Radio Times . Doctors is a British medical soap opera, first broadcast on BBC One on 26 March 2000. Filmed in Birmingham and set in the fictional West Midlands town of Letherbridge, the soap follows the lives of the staff of both an NHS doctor's surgery and a university campus surgery, as well as the lives of their families and friends. Initially, only 41 episodes of the programme were ordered, but due to the positive reception, the BBC ordered it as a continuing soap opera. Doctors was filmed at the Pebble Mill Studios until 2004; production then relocated to the BBC Drama Village, where it will film until 2024. Episodes are filmed three months prior to transmission. The soap is typically broadcast on weekdays at 1:45 pm on BBC One, as well as having classic episodes broadcast on Drama. It takes three annual transmission breaks across the year: at Easter, during the summer and at Christmas.

Ian Kelsey is an English actor. He is known for his roles as Dave Glover in the ITV soap opera Emmerdale, Patrick Spiller in the BBC medical drama Casualty, DI Richard Mayne in the ITV crime drama Blue Murder and Howard Bellamy in the BBC soap opera Doctors. As well as appearing in the BBC drama Down to Earth, he also portrayed the role of Vinny Ashford in the ITV soap opera Coronation Street from 2016 to 2017.

She was introduced as the ex-wife of Mac McGuire who begins working as a receptionist at the Riverside Health Centre alongside him. She met with Doctors producers in September 2002 where she was offered the role of Julia for a three-month stint. She made her onscreen debut on 13 January 2003 and her storylines throughout her tenure see Julia get remarried to Mac, become the practice manager of the surgery and expanding their endeavours, getting accused of blowing up their surgery, a second divorce from Mac and meeting a new love interest in Martin Millar.

During her time on Doctors, Lily is depicted as a talented and devoted doctor who "does everything by the book". She struggles with social interaction and does not find it easy to trust people. Lily made her final appearance on 31 March 2010 when she leaves the fictional Mill Health Centre to go on sabbatical leave to take care of the drug-addicted Sapphire Cox. Producers of the soap felt Lily was a successful character since she provided a contrast between herself and other colleagues.

Jack Hollins is a fictional character from the BBC soap opera Doctors, portrayed by Nicolas Woodman. Jack first appeared on 4 August 2009 and left Doctors on 21 September 2012. He returned for brief stints in 2013 and 2014. His storylines in the series have included his secret relationship with Zara Carmichael and completing a degree at university. Following the completion of his degree, it was confirmed by producer Peter Eryl Lloyd that the character would face numerous life decisions that ultimately resulted in his exit.

In 2009, Clemmow began portraying the role of Imogen Hollins in the BBC soap opera Doctors; she initially left the soap in 2012, later making a guest appearance in 2014. Clemmow had appeared in Doctors on a recurring basis since 2019. For her role as Imogen, she has received nominations at the RTS Midlands Awards, the British Soap Awards and the Inside Soap Awards. Away from Doctors, Clemmow has appeared in two films and voiced a character in a period drama podcast.

Dr. Elaine Cassidy is a fictional character from the BBC soap opera Doctors, portrayed by Janet Dibley. She made her first appearance during the series 12 episode "Frozen", broadcast on 31 August 2010. She departed Doctors on 28 September 2012.

She is introduced on 5 January 2011 as a new receptionist at the fictional Mill Health Centre as a replacement for Ruth Pearce. Despite initially being introduced as Mrs Tembe, she later reveals her forename to be Winifred. In April 2016, Mrs Tembe's role within Doctors changed as she becomes the practice manager. On 8 January 2019, it was announced that Laidlaw was to leave Doctors after 8 years. Mrs Tembe's exit storyline saw her move away with Gordon Clement to Newcastle after accepting a new job working as a manager for a children's charity. Laidlaw's final scenes aired on 13 February 2019.

Howard Bellamy (<i>Doctors</i>) Fictional character from Doctors

Howard Bellamy is a fictional character from the BBC soap opera Doctors, portrayed by Ian Kelsey. Howard first appeared on 28 May 2012, where he is introduced as the practice manager of the fictional Mill Health Centre. Kelsey was cast in the soap following the departure of Julia Parsons, the practice manager prior to Howard. He is an ex-army captain, and producers deliberately made his personality different to Julia's. Howard was based on a real person since producers had heard of a situation where somebody quit the army to become the practice manager of a doctor's surgery. Kelsey spoke to a real-life practice manager to aid his accuracy in the role.

Slater family (<i>EastEnders</i>) UK soap opera family, created 2000

The Slater family are a fictional family from the BBC soap opera EastEnders, that have appeared since Episode 1,997, first broadcast in September 2000. The family are introduced as a central family unit, originally consisting of father Charlie Slater, grandmother Mo Harris, Charlie's daughters, Kat Slater, Lynne Slater, Little Mo Morgan and Kat's teenage daughter Zoe Slater, and Lynne's partner Garry Hobbs. A fifth sister, Belinda Peacock, was introduced one year later. The family were the eighth to be introduced in the soap's history, replacing the di Marco family who departed during the previous month. The Slaters were created by Tony Jordan and introduced by John Yorke. The Slater sisters were cast in an improvisation session. In their first years on the show, the family were involved in storylines about child sexual abuse and domestic violence.
