List of French marquisates

Last updated

The following page contains an incomplete list (A-Z) of French marquisates created or confirmed by the Kings of France or created by sovereigns of former territories subsequently annexed by France (Spanish Netherlands, Duchy of Lorraine, Duchy of Savoy, Comtat Venaissin, and other sovereign lords) recognized in France by the French sovereigns after the annexation of these territories.

Contents

From the late Middle Ages until the French revolution, marquisates were mainly raised by letters patent. In a few cases other official acts, such as brevets royal, were used to create or confirm marquisates. These marquisats were created or confirmed in favor of noble families as a reward or in favor of princely houses.

The creations of marquis titles were numerous especially during the reigns of Louis XIV and louis XV. Currently, there does not exist a complete list of marquisates (or other marquess titles).

Nobility was a pre-condition in France for bearing a title of nobility and some French noble families assumed a title of "marquis" without this title being legally created by the king or transmitted irregularly, in this case it is a Courtesy title without legal recognition.

The title was attached to the fief, therefore a non-noble purchaser of a marquisate could formally only be styled seigneur du marquisat de X (Lord of the marquisate of X) and he did not become noble by buying the marquisate. With the French revolution, feudalism was abolished and titles became disconnected from the land to which they were previously attached.

In France, the authentic titles of nobility are transmitted only (except with rare exceptions) in the male descendants of the first beneficiary and in an order of primogeniture. This means many titles became extinct when the last direct male descendant of the first titleholder died. Some rare title from First French Empire (1804-1815) could be transmitted by adoption (with the authorization of the Sovereign) but Napoleon did not create marquis titles.

Although France is a Republic since 1870, and there is no more nobility in France, titles are protected by law. The Departement of Justice maintains a register of titles and can deliver decrees of investiture to heirs of titles whose succession has been recognized. This investiture is needed to use legally a title, but many members of former noble families use so-called "courtesy title" without much sanction.

Some non-noble French families assumed a title of "marquis" (especially from the 19th century). These False titles of nobility are not included in this list of marquisates in France since they have been fabricated or invented and not created or recognized by a French sovereign.

In the "Type" column is an acronym or symbol that identifies the type of marquisate
