There are currently thirty-six Presidents on the list and seven living Presidents since Jair Bolsonaro was inaugurated as the 38th President of Brazil on January 1, 2019. The list is in descending order and is correct as of August 4, 2019. The oldest president is Venceslau Brás (1868–1966), who died at the age of 98 years, 78 days. The oldest living former president, José Sarney (born April 24, 1930), will tie Venceslau Brás if he lives to July 11, 2028. The second oldest living former president, Fernando Henrique Cardoso (born June 18, 1931), will also tie Brás if he lives to September 4, 2029.

Jair Bolsonaro 38th President of Brazil

Jair Messias Bolsonaro is a Brazilian politician and retired military officer, serving as the 38th President of Brazil since 1 January 2019. He served in the country's Chamber of Deputies, representing the state of Rio de Janeiro, between 1991 and 2018. He currently is a member of the conservative Social Liberal Party.

President of Brazil Head of state and head of government of Brazil

The President of Brazil, officially the President of the Federative Republic of Brazil or simply the President of the Republic, is both the head of state and the head of government of Brazil. The president leads the executive branch of the federal government and is the commander-in-chief of the Brazilian Armed Forces. The presidential system was established in 1889, upon the proclamation of the republic in a military coup d'état against Emperor Pedro II. Since then, Brazil has had six constitutions, three dictatorships, and three democratic periods. During the democratic periods, voting has always been compulsory. The Constitution of Brazil, along with several constitutional amendments, establishes the requirements, powers, and responsibilities of the president, their term of office and the method of election.

Venceslau Brás

Venceslau Brás Pereira Gomes was a Brazilian politician who served as ninth President of Brazil between 1914 and 1918, during the First Brazilian Republic. Brás was born in Brasópolis, Minas Gerais State. He became governor of that state in 1909, and in 1910 he was elected vice-president under Hermes Rodrigues da Fonseca. As Vice President, he also served as the President of the Senate. He was elected president in 1914 and served until 1918. His government declared war on the Central Powers in October 1917 during World War I. He was the longest-lived Brazilian president, reaching 98 years of age.

Contents

The president with the longest retirement is Venceslau Brás. He left office on 14 November 1918 and died 47 years and 182 days later on 15 May 1966. The president with the shortest retirement is Artur da Costa e Silva, who died on 17 December 1969, 64 days after he left office on 14 October 1969.

Artur da Costa e Silva President of Brazil

Artur da Costa e Silva was a Brazilian Army General and the second President of the Brazilian military government that came to power after the 1964 coup d'état. He reached the rank of Marshal of the Brazilian Army, and held the post of Minister of War in the military government of President Castelo Branco.

To account for the different number of leap days within the life of each president, two measure of longevity are given. The first is the number of whole years the president lived, and the number of days past their last birthday. The second list the total number of days lived by the president, accounting for differing numbers of leap years within the lifespans of different presidents.

Oldest living Presidents of Brazil

Not all presidents live to become the oldest of their time. Of the 29 deceased presidents, 14 eventually became the oldest of their time, while 15 did not (including both presidents who died in office, and 13 others). Venceslau Bras became the oldest living president when Epitácio Pessoa died in 1942 and remained so until his death in 1966, for a record 24 years and 91 days. Juscelino Kubitschek became the oldest living president after the death of Gaspar Dutra but he survived Dutra by only 2 years and 72 days.

Epitácio Pessoa Brazilian politician and judge

Epitácio Lindolfo da Silva Pessoa was a Brazilian politician and jurist who served as 11th President of Brazil between 1919 and 1922, when Rodrigues Alves was unable to take office due to illness, after being elected in 1918. His period of government was marked by military revolts that would culminate in the Revolution of 1930, which brought Getúlio Vargas into control of the federal government.

Eurico Gaspar Dutra president of Brazil from 1946 to 1951

Eurico Gaspar Dutra was a Brazilian military leader and politician who served as 16th President of Brazil from 1946 to 1951. He was the first President of the Second Brazilian Republic which immediately followed the Vargas Regime.

On one occasion the oldest living president lost this distinction not by his death, but due to the inauguration of a president who was older. Prudente de Morais lost this distinction when Campos Sales was inaugurated in 1898.

Prudente de Morais President of Brazil

Prudente José de Morais e Barros was the third President of Brazil. He is notable as the first civilian president of the country, the first to be elected by direct popular ballot under the permanent provisions of Brazil's 1891 Constitution, and the first to serve his term in its entirety. His presidency, which lasted from 15 November 1894 until 14 November 1898, was marked by the War of Canudos, a campesinant revolt in the northeast of the country that was crushed by the Brazilian Army. He also had to face a break in diplomatic relations with Portugal that was successfully mediated by Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom.

Gaspar Dutra was the oldest to acquire this distinction at the age of 82 years, and 362 days. Washington Luis, who was 87 years, and 282 days old when he died, on 4 August 1957 was the oldest president to die without ever acquiring this distinction. Itamar Franco, who died on 2 July 2011, at 81 years and 4 days old is the most recent president to die without ever acquiring this distinction.

Itamar Franco Brazilian politician

Itamar Augusto Cautiero Franco was a Brazilian politician who served as the 33rd President of Brazil from December 29, 1992 to December 31, 1994. Previously he was Vice President of Brazil from 1990 until the resignation of President Fernando Collor de Mello. During his long political career Franco also served as Senator, Mayor, Ambassador and Governor. At the time of his death he was a Senator from Minas Gerais, having won the seat in the 2010 election.
