The UEFA Europa Conference League is a seasonal football competition established in 2021. [1] It was envisaged as a way for UEFA to accommodate at least 34 of its national associations in the group stage and is third-tier of European football behind the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League. [2] The winner automatically qualifies for the subsequent season's Europa League, unless they have already qualified for the Champions League through their domestic league. The format features eight groups of four teams, with the winners of each group qualifying for the round of 16 and a playoff round held between the teams that finish second in their group and those that finish third in their Europa League groups to determine the remaining eight teams. Matches are held over two legs with the final held at a neutral venue. [3]

Contents

The introduction of the Europa Conference League into European football was announced in 2018, with the competition starting in 2021. The competition aimed to offer more matches for more clubs and have more representation from associations that might not qualify for the group stages of the Champions League or Europa League. [4] This is determined via the UEFA country coefficients with three teams participating from nations ranked 16 to 50, two teams participating from nations ranked 6 to 15 and 51 to 55, and one team participating from nations ranked 1 to 5. [5]

Roma won the inaugural competition with a 1–0 victory in the 2022 final against Feyenoord. [6] West Ham United are the current champions; they beat Fiorentina 2–1 in the 2023 final. [7] Italian and English have won the competition the most times with one win each, while Italian and Dutch clubs have each lost one final.

This page details statistics of the UEFA Cup and UEFA Europa League. Unless notified these statistics concern all seasons since inception of the UEFA Cup in the 1971–72 season, including qualifying rounds. The UEFA Cup replaced the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in the 1971–72 season, so the Fairs Cup is not considered a UEFA competition, and hence clubs' records in the Fairs Cup are not considered part of their European record.

Italian football clubs have entered European association football competitions since season 1955–56, when Milan took part in European Cup competition. Nowadays, Italian football is the fourth force in Europe according to UEFA ranking, following the English, Spanish and German leagues. Italian clubs have also entered several times worldwide inter-club competitions since the 1963 Intercontinental Cup.

The 2014–15 season was Associazione Sportiva Roma's 87th in existence and 86th season in the top flight of Italian football. The team competed in Serie A, the Coppa Italia, the Champions League, and the Europa League. Roma finished second behind Juventus for the second consecutive season after a poor run of form in 2015. The club finished third in their Champions League group and thus dropped down to the Europa League, where they were knocked out by Fiorentina in the Round of 16. Incidentally, Roma were also knocked out of the Coppa Italia by Fiorentina at the quarter-final stage, losing 2–0 at the Stadio Olimpico.
