List of Uplift Universe species

A list of fictional (and mostly extraterrestrial) species in the Uplift Universe series of novels by David Brin.

The Uplift Universe is a fictional universe created by American science fiction writer David Brin. A central feature in this universe is the process of biological uplift.

David Brin novelist, short story writer

Glen David Brin is an American scientist and author of science fiction. He has received the Hugo, Locus, Campbell and Nebula Awards. His novel The Postman was adapted as a feature film and starred Kevin Costner in 1997. Brin's nonfiction book The Transparent Society won the Freedom of Speech Award of the American Library Association and the McGannon Communication Award.

When formally referenced, a species's name includes all of its surviving patrons and clients. The prefix "ul-" indicates a client and is an abbreviation for UpLifted. The prefix "ab-" indicates a patron race and is an acronym of Aided-By. Therefore, for instance, the species Dolphin is formally Dolphin-ab-Human. Humans, in turn, are formally Human-ul-Chimpanzee-ul-Dolphin. Other Prefixes also exist (such as "zor-" representing former patrons when clients choose to change patrons). Among powerful clans species names can become quite involved.

Jellyfish soft-bodied, aquatic invertebrates

Jellyfish and sea jellies are the informal common names given to the medusa-phase of certain gelatinous members of the subphylum Medusozoa, a major part of the phylum Cnidaria. Jellyfish are mainly free-swimming marine animals with umbrella-shaped bells and trailing tentacles, although a few are not mobile, being anchored to the seabed by stalks. The bell can pulsate to provide propulsion and highly efficient locomotion. The tentacles are armed with stinging cells and may be used to capture prey and defend against predators. Jellyfish have a complex life cycle; the medusa is normally the sexual phase, the planula larva can disperse widely and is followed by a sedentary polyp phase.

Carnivore An organism that eats other animals as its diet for nutrition and strength

A carnivore, meaning "meat eater", is an organism that derives its energy and nutrient requirements from a diet consisting mainly or exclusively of animal tissue, whether through predation or scavenging. Animals that depend solely on animal flesh for their nutrient requirements are called obligate carnivores while those that also consume non-animal food are called facultative carnivores. Omnivores also consume both animal and non-animal food, and, apart from the more general definition, there is no clearly defined ratio of plant to animal material that would distinguish a facultative carnivore from an omnivore. A carnivore at the top of the food chain, not preyed upon by other animals, is termed an apex predator.
