Esch-sur-Alzette is a city in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and the country's second-most populous commune, with a population of 35,040 inhabitants, as of 2018. It lies in the south-west of the country, on the border with France and in the valley of the Alzette, which flows through the city. The city is usually referred to as just Esch; however, the full name distinguishes it from the village and commune of Esch-sur-Sûre which lies 45 kilometres further north. The country's capital, Luxembourg City, is roughly 15 km (9.3 mi) to the north-east. Esch was selected as the European Capital of Culture for 2022, alongside Kaunas and Novi Sad.
The German-speaking Community, also known as East Belgium, is one of the three federal communities of Belgium, with an area of 854 km2 (330 sq mi) in the Liège Province of Wallonia, including nine of the eleven municipalities of Eupen-Malmedy. Traditionally speakers of Limburgish, Ripuarian and Moselle Franconian varieties; the population numbers 77,949 – about 7.0% of Liège Province and about 0.7% of the national total.
The 12 cantons of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg are areas of local government at the first level of local administrative unit (LAU-1) in the European Union's Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics for Eurostat purposes. They were subdivisions of the three districts of Luxembourg until 2015, when the district level of government was abolished. The cantons are in turn subdivided into 100 communes.
Fischbach is a commune and village in central Luxembourg. It is part of the canton of Mersch, which is part of the district of Luxembourg.
Wiltz is a canton in northwestern Luxembourg. Its capital is the city of Wiltz. It covers an area of 264.55 km2, and as of 2018 it has a population of 16,735.
Grevenmacher is a canton in the east of Luxembourg. Its capital is Grevenmacher, a commune with town status. The canton's name derives from its principal municipality. Neither the canton, town, or commune of Grevenmacher should be confused with the former district of Grevenmacher, one of three administrative units in Luxembourg abolished in October 2015.
Redange is a canton in the northwest of Luxembourg. The capital is Redange, otherwise known as Redange-sur-Attert. It borders the cantons of Wiltz to the north, Diekirch and Mersch to the east, Capellen to the south and Belgium to the west.
