Generally, the defensive coordinator, the offensive coordinator and the special teams coordinator represent the second level of a team's coaching structure, with the head coach being the first level. The primary role of the defensive coordinator is managing the roster of defensive players, overseeing the assistant coaches, developing the defensive game plan, and calling plays for the defense during the game. The defensive coordinator typically manages multiple position coaches, each of whom are responsible for various defensive positions on the team.

He recently served as the defensive coordinator for the New York Jets of the National Football League (NFL) from 2019 to 2020. Previously, he was head coach of the Buffalo Bills from 2001 to 2003, and defensive coordinator of the New Orleans Saints from 2009 to 2011, and the Cleveland Browns, acting as an interim head coach in the 2018 season. Williams is known for running aggressive, attacking 4–3 schemes that put heavy pressure on opposing quarterbacks and for his key role in the New Orleans Saints bounty scandal, also known as "Bountygate".

Charles Richard LeBeau is an American former professional football player and coach in the National Football League (NFL). He was active at field level in the NFL for 59 consecutive seasons, 14 playing cornerback with the Detroit Lions and 45 as a coach. LeBeau spent the majority of his coaching career as a defensive assistant, most notably as the defensive coordinator of the Cincinnati Bengals and Pittsburgh Steelers. Described as an "innovator" and "defensive football genius", he is considered to be one of the greatest defensive coordinators of all time.

Gregory Paul Landry is an American former professional football player who was a quarterback in the National Football League (NFL) from 1968 to 1981, and again in 1984. He played for the Detroit Lions, Baltimore Colts and Chicago Bears. He played college football at Massachusetts from 1965–1967. He became an assistant coach after his playing career.

Robert Allen Ryan is an American football coach who is currently the senior defensive assistant for the Las Vegas Raiders of the National Football League (NFL). Ryan has served as a defensive coordinator or assistant coach for seven different NFL teams. He was the linebackers coach for the New England Patriots when they won both Super Bowl XXXVI and Super Bowl XXXVIII. Ryan is the son of Buddy Ryan and the twin brother of Rex Ryan.

Sonny Jack Cumbie is an American football coach and former quarterback who is currently the head coach at Louisiana Tech University. He previously served as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Texas Tech University and was the interim head coach after the departure of Matt Wells in 2021. He also previously served as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Texas Christian University (TCU). Cumbie played college football at Texas Tech and was their starting quarterback during the 2004 season, when he led the nation in passing and total offense, a guided the Red Raiders to win in the 2004 Holiday Bowl, earning MVP honors for the game. Cumbie played professionally in the Arena Football League, the Indoor Football League, and briefly in the National Football League (NFL).

Corey Mayfield is a former American football offensive lineman/defensive lineman and coach of the Arena Football League. Mayfield is currently the Defensive Coordinator of the Texas Revolution of Champions Indoor Football (CIF). Mayfield played in the National Football League and the Arena Football League.

Bob Slowik is a gridiron football coach who is currently the linebackers coach for the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League (CFL). He was also a defensive coordinator for the Denver Broncos, Green Bay Packers, Cleveland Browns and Chicago Bears in the National Football League (NFL) and for the Montreal Alouettes in the CFL. He has also been a coach for Rutgers, East Carolina University, and the Dallas Cowboys.

Shawn Halloran is an American high school sports administrator and former football player and coach. He played college football as a quarterback for the Boston College Eagles and professionally for St. Louis Cardinals of the National Football League (NFL). Halloran served as the head football coach at Franklin & Marshall College from 2003 to 2005, compiling a record of 17–15. He is currently the athletic director at Bishop Lynch High School in Dallas, Texas, a position he has held since 2017.

Jim Cordle is a former American football center that played in the National Football League (NFL). He was signed by the New York Giants as an undrafted free agent in 2011. He was part of the Giants team that won Super Bowl XLVI over the New England Patriots. He played college football for the Ohio State University. Cordle was previously the offensive line coach and offensive coordinator at Long Island University. He is currently the offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at Ohio Northern. Father is Jim Cordle who was a teacher for special education.

Kevin Coyle is an American football coach who is currently the defensive coordinator at Fresno State. Prior to that, Coyle was a senior analyst at LSU. He served as head coach of the Atlanta Legends of the Alliance of American Football (AAF) and also spent 13 seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals of the National Football League (NFL).

Glen Young is a Canadian gridiron football coach and former linebacker. He is currently the defensive coordinator for the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League (CFL). He played professionally as a linebacker for eight seasons in the (CFL) for the Argonauts, Montreal Alouettes, and Edmonton Eskimos, from 1998 to 2005. Prior to his time in the CFL, he played two seasons in the National Football League (NFL) for the San Diego Chargers, from 1995 to 1996.
