Urban local bodies in Tamil Nadu, consisting of municipal corporations, municipalities, and town panchayats, have been established by the Government of Tamil Nadu in accordance with the Constitution of India. [1] Municipal corporations cater to larger urban areas, municipalities serve smaller urban areas, and town panchayats cater to areas that are under transition from rural to urban. [2] As of 2024, there are 25 municipal corporations, 138 municipalities and 490 town panchayats in Tamil Nadu. [3] [4]
A municipal corporation is headed by a mayor, who presides over elected councilors representing individual wards. Chennai Corporation, established in 1688, is the oldest urban body in India and is the second oldest corporation in the world after London. [5] As of 2024, there are 25 municipal corporations in Tamil Nadu. [6]

Tiruchirappalli, is a major tier II city in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu and the administrative headquarters of Tiruchirappalli district. The city is credited with being the best livable and the cleanest city of Tamil Nadu, as well as the fifth safest city for women in India. It is the fourth largest city as well as the fourth largest urban agglomeration in the state. Located 322 kilometres (200 mi) south of Chennai and 374 kilometres (232 mi) north of Kanyakumari, Tiruchirappalli sits almost at the geographic centre of Tamil Nadu state. The Cauvery Delta begins 16 kilometres (9.9 mi) west of the city where the Kaveri river splits into two, forming the island of Srirangam which is now incorporated into the Tiruchirappalli City Municipal Corporation. The city occupies an area of 167.23 square kilometres (64.57 sq mi) and had a population of 916,857 in 2011.
Mayiladuthurai is a special grade municipality and district headquarters of Mayiladuthurai district in Tamil Nadu, India. The town is located at a distance of 256 km (159 mi) from the state capital, Chennai.
Karaikudi is the largest city of Sivaganga district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is the centre of the Karaikudi Metropolitan Area, the 21st largest urban area of Tamil Nadu based on 2011 census data. It is part of the area commonly referred to as Chettinad and has been declared a City Municipal Corporation by the Government of Tamil Nadu, on account of the palatial houses built with limestone called Kaarai veedu. Karaikudi Municipal Corporation spreads about 94.31 km2 (36.41 sq mi) consists of 100 wards which undergoes major developments as part of Government Schemes.

Tamil Nadu's first woman Asian Games competitor, Santhi Soundarajan, is from Pudukkottai.
Pattukkottai is a major town in Thanjavur district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu and also important town in Delta districts and Commercial town of Thanjavur, Thiruvarur and Pudukkottai district Coastal areas. The town came to prominence throughout Southern India after the construction of the fort by Vanaji Pandithar, a feudatory of the Thanjavur Maratha ruler Shahuji I in 1686–87. The recorded history of Pattukkottai is known from the 17th century and has been ruled, at different times, by the Thanjavur Marathas and the British. It is the headquarters of the Pattukkottai taluk of Thanjavur district and is one of the two municipalities in the district.
Ariyalur is a town and district headquarters of Ariyalur district in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu and is rich in limestone, surrounded with seven cement factories and two sugar factories. The town is located at a distance of 310 km (190 mi) from the state capital Chennai.

Salem City Municipal Corporation (SCMC) is a civic body that governs Salem city, Tamil Nadu, India. It consists of a legislative and an executive body. The legislative body is headed by the city mayor while the executive body is headed by a Chief Commissioner. This corporation consists of 60 wards and is headed by a Mayor who presides over a Deputy Mayor and 60 councillors who represent each ward in the city. SCMC is the fifth largest municipal corporation in Tamil Nadu. For administrative purposes, the Salem corporation is divided into four zones: Suramangalam, Hasthampatty, Ammapettai, and Kondalampatty. Each Zonal Office has its own Zonal Chairman and an Asst. Commissioner to take care of Zonal Activities.

It is the principle rail-head in the city that serves it's metropolitan area, falling under the jurisdiction of Madurai railway division of Southern Railway zone. It the major junction of the Chettinad region and the surrounding areas of Sivaganga district. It is one of the 73 stations in Tamil Nadu to be named for upgradation under Amrit Bharat Station Scheme of Indian Railways.

Tambaram City Municipal Corporation (TCMC) is a local government of the City of Tambaram within the Chennai Metropolitan Area of Tamil Nadu, India. It covers an area of 87.64 sq. km in the Chengalpattu district, and has a population of 722,982.

Chengalpattu district came into existence on 29 November 2019 when it was carved out of Kanchipuram district after the announcement about the bifurcation of districts on 18 July 2019.

Karaikudi City Municipal Corporation is the civic body governing city of Karaikudi in Tamil Nadu state of India. It was the 22nd Municipal corporation in Tamil Nadu, and was established on 15 March 2024. It consists of 100 wards, the second highest in Tamil Nadu after Greater Chennai Corporation. It is headed by the mayor, who presides over a deputy mayor, and is administrated by the City Commissioner. Karaikudi Urban Agglomeration area has adjoined with the surrounding areas of Sankarapuram, Kottaiyur, Kandanur, and Puduvayal town panchayats; and village panchayats that includes Koviloor, Ariyakudi, Amaravathiputhur, Iluppaikkudi and Managiri. The annual tax revenue of the corporation is expected to be about 57.25 crore rupees. Karaikudi is one of the major educational cities and tourist attractions in Tamil Nadu and had a population of 303,291 and area of 94.31 km² as in 2023.
