Live! Woodstock '94 is a live album by the American punk rock band Green Day. The album was released specially through Record Store Day on April 13, 2019 in honor of the 50th anniversary of Woodstock and the 25th anniversary of the now-famous set the band played Woodstock '94. This was the first live Green Day album to feature the entire set list.

Punk rock is a rock music genre that emerged in the mid-1970s in the United States, United Kingdom, and Australia. Rooted in 1960s garage rock and other forms of what is now known as "proto-punk" music, punk rock bands rejected perceived excesses of mainstream 1970s rock. They typically produced short, fast-paced songs with hard-edged melodies and singing styles, stripped-down instrumentation, and often political, anti-establishment lyrics. Punk embraces a DIY ethic; many bands self-produce recordings and distribute them through independent record labels.

Background

Green Day played the Woodstock festival on the South Stage on August 14, 1994, 5 months after their first major label album Dookie was released. The performance was one of the most memorable of the festival, with the band getting involved in a mud fight with their fans. [2] Tré Cool said of the event: "It was a crazy set – a set that changed our whole lives." [3] On March 1, 2019, the band announced on their Instagram, "Look at that! Woodstock 1994 Live (remixed + remastered) drops on vinyl for the first time ever this Record Store Day. No better way to celebrate 50 years of Woodstock and the 25th anniversary of when we got a little muddy."

Album cover

The album cover was created by Billie Joe Armstrong. The cover photo features the same image featured on the front of the band’s 1994 album Dookie, but with duct tape over the cover, splattered with mud and written on. The band name on top of the mushroom cloud is covered by a piece of duct tape with "Green Day Live!" written on it, the monkey on the bottom left is wearing sunglasses, four of the missiles are saying "Never Trust a Hippy" and the word "Dookie" is covered by another piece of duct tape, with "Woodstock 1994" written on it. Billie Joe Armstrong American musician

Billie Joe Armstrong is an American singer, songwriter, musician, record producer, and actor. Armstrong serves as the lead vocalist, primary songwriter, and lead guitarist of the punk rock band Green Day, co-founded with Mike Dirnt. He is also a guitarist and vocalist for the punk rock band Pinhead Gunpowder, and provides lead vocals for Green Day's side projects Foxboro Hot Tubs, The Network and The Longshot.

Notes on performance

Woodstock '94 has also been referred to as Mudstock, or Mudstock '94, partly due to the rainy weather that resulted in mud pits; the band Nine Inch Nails performed covered in mud, and the crowd threw mud onto the stage when Primus performed "My Name Is Mud". During Green Day's performance, the crowd also started to pelt the stage with mud, some of which hit the guitarist and lead vocalist Billie Joe Armstrong. Armstrong then started a mudfight during their song, "Paper Lanterns", with the crowd. In the documentary VH1 Behind The Music: Green Day, bassist Mike Dirnt was mistaken for one of the fans jumping on stage, and was spear-tackled by a security guard, knocking out one of his teeth. It was this incident that caused Dirnt to need emergency orthodontia. A gag order was put in place regarding this incident. In spite of the now-famous mud-fight and Dirnt's injury, Woodstock quickly propelled Green Day's then recently released album, Dookie , into success.

Primus (band) Rock band from the United States

Primus is an American funk metal band from El Sobrante, California, currently composed of bassist/vocalist Les Claypool, guitarist Larry "Ler" LaLonde and drummer Tim "Herb" Alexander. Primus originally formed in 1984 with Claypool and guitarist Todd Huth, later joined by drummer Jay Lane, though the latter two departed the band at the end of 1988. Featuring LaLonde and Alexander, Primus recorded their debut Suck on This in 1989, followed by four studio albums: Frizzle Fry, Sailing the Seas of Cheese, Pork Soda, and Tales from the Punchbowl. Alexander left the band in 1996, replaced by Bryan "Brain" Mantia, and Primus went on to record the original theme song for the TV show South Park and two more albums, Brown Album and Antipop, before declaring a hiatus in 2000.

"My Name Is Mud" is a song by the American funk metal band Primus and is the first single from the 1993 album Pork Soda. The lyrics are written from the point of view of a blue-collar man, Aloysius Devandander Abercrombie, who has killed his friend after an argument and is now trying to bury him. The song samples the line "Where are you goin' city boy?" from the film Deliverance.
