Mariam Alexander Baby is an Indian politician and member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) from Kerala. [1] He was elected to the Politburo of CPI(M) in the 20th Congress held at Kozhikode,Kerala,in 2012. [2]
M.A. Baby was born to P.M. Alexander and Lilly Alexander on April 5,1954 at Prakkulam in Kollam district of Kerala. Baby did his schooling from Prakkulam Lower Primary School and Prakkulam NSS High School. It was during his high school days where he was first acquainted with politics. After completing basic schooling,Baby went to SN College,Kollam for pre- degree(plus two). Later,Baby joined for BA in Political Science in SN College itself. However,he was unable to finish his bachelor's degree. [1]
He is married to Betty Louis and has a son Ashok Betty Nelson. [1]
M.A. Baby joined Kerala Students Federation,the predecessor of Students Federation of India,while he was studying at NSS high school,Prakkulam. He has held many responsible positions in Students Federation of India,Democratic Youth Federation of India,Communist Party of India (Marxist). Currently he is a Politburo member of CPI(M). [1]
He was the Minister of Education in Kerala during the period 2006-2011.
He unsuccessfully contested from Kollam against N. K. Premachandran of Revolutionary Socialist Party during 2014 Indian general elections.
The Communist Party of India (Marxist) (abbreviated as CPI(M)/CPIM/CPM) is a communist political party in India. It is the largest communist party in India in terms of membership and electoral seats and one of the national parties of India. The 34 years of Left Front rule (where CPIM was the Largest Party) in West Bengal was the longest-serving democratically elected communist-led government in the world. It had been the third largest party of Parliament of India for many decades. The party emerged from a split in the CPI in 1964. As of 2022,CPI(M) is a part of ruling alliances in three states —the LDF in Kerala,Mahagathbandhan in Bihar,and the SPA in Tamil Nadu. CPIM has representation in the legislative assemblies of 8 states.The Party is currently the main opposition in Tripura along with Congress (SDF Alliance) and local bodies in West Bengal and Tripura. The fall of CPIM from West Bengal has led to a gradual decline in its memberships and seats.
Communist Marxist Party (CMP) was a political party in Kerala. The party was founded in 1986 when CPI(M) leader M. V. Raghavan was expelled from the CPI(M) due to a grave difference of opinion regarding the formation of alliances with the IUML. His support for forming a united front with non-secular parties such as the Muslim League in order to take on alliances led by the INC was ultimately rejected by the CPI(M) leadership. He was subsequently expelled from the Party.
