Raja, starring Jayam Ravi, Asin Thottumkal, Nadhiya, and Prakash Raj in the lead roles while Vivek and Subbaraju play supporting roles. The film's score and soundtrack are composed by Srikanth Deva. The film was emerged as a blockbuster and one of the most profitable movies of 2004. This movie was a remake of the Telugu film Amma Nanna O Tamila Ammayi .

Tamil language language

Tamil is a Dravidian language predominantly spoken by the Tamil people of India and Sri Lanka, and by the Tamil diaspora, Sri Lankan Moors, Douglas, and Chindians. They also tend to be musicals that include songs, often filmed in picturesque locations. The genre is named after the masala, a mixture of spices in Indian cuisine. According to The Hindu, masala is the most popular genre of Indian cinema. Masala films have origins in 1970s Bollywood (Hindi) films, and are most common in Bollywood and South Indian films.

Jayam Ravi Indian actor

Ravi Mohan, better known by his stage name Jayam Ravi, is an Indian Tamil actor who works in the Tamil film industry. The son of veteran film editor Mohan, Ravi made his debut as an actor in the romantic drama film Jayam (2003), directed by his elder brother Mohan Raja and produced by his father. The success of the film prompted the title to become a prefix to his stage name, and he continued to collaborate with his brother for other films including Jayam (2003), M. Kumaran S/O Mahalakshmi (2004), Unakkum Enakkum (2006), Santhosh Subramaniam (2008), Thillalangadi (2010) and Thani Oruvan (2015).

Plot

For Kumaran (Jayam Ravi), life is about his mother Mahalakshmi (Nadhiya), who was separated from her husband Eeshwar (Prakash Raj). Eeshwar goes on to pursue his passion in kickboxing and becomes a world-renowned trainer based in Malaysia. Mahalakshmi stays in India and devotes her life to bringing up her son. Kumaran is also passionate about kickboxing and shares a special relationship with his mother. In between, he falls in love with Malabar (Asin Thottumkal), but his life is destroyed after his mother's death. On her deathbed, she tells him to meet Eeshwar, and Kumaran goes to Malaysia to meet him. Kumaran gets a job at his father's kickboxing academy but finds him with another wife (Aishwarya) and a daughter. Kumaran feels betrayed and angry, and this causes plenty of friction between him and his father. Eeshwar trains a boxer named Anand (Subbaraju), who he is sure will win the championship. Anand is Eeshwar's devotion, and on many occasions, he demonstrates his preference for him over Kumaran. However, Anand soon makes Eeshwar's daughter pregnant and dumps her. He then turns traitor to Eeshwar and joins another team when they offer him a better contract. The rest of the story is about how Eeshwar trains Kumaran against Anand and wins the kickboxing competition, while Kumaran helps his half-sister with her love. Kumaran wins the kickboxing championship. The movie ends with Kumaran seeing a final apparition of his mother looking at him proudly and waving goodbye.

Zareena Moidu , known by her stage name Nadhiya, is an Indian film actress who predominantly appears in Tamil and Malayalam films. She has also acted in a few Telugu films. She made her debut in the Malayalam film Nokketha Doorathu Kannum Nattu (1984), alongside Mohanlal and Padmini. This movie was re-made in Tamil as Poove Poochudava in 1985 with Padmini and marked her debut in Tamil. She has acted alongside most of the leading artists in the Tamil and Malayalam film industries. After her marriage in 1988, she settled in United States with her husband Shirish Godbole and two daughters.

Prakash Raj Indian film actor, director, producer, and television presenter

Prakash Raj is an Indian film actor, director, producer, thespian, television presenter, activist and politician who is known for his works in the South Indian film industry, and Hindi films. He acted in back-to-back stage shows for 300 a month in the initial stages of his career, when he joined Kalakshetra, Bengaluru, and he has 2,000 street theatre performances to his credit.

Kickboxing group of stand-up combat sports based on kicking and punching

Kickboxing is a group of stand-up combat sports based on kicking and punching, historically developed from karate mixed with boxing. Kickboxing is practiced for self-defence, general fitness, or as a contact sport.

Cast

Saritha is a South Indian actress who has acted in more than 150 films in Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada and Telugu languages. She was one of the popular and critically acclaimed lead actresses during the 1980s. She also appeared in a television serial, Selvi. She is also credited as a dubbing artist. She has dubbed her voice for Tamil and Telugu movies for actresses like Vijayashanti, Tabu, Sushmita Sen, Ramya Krishnan & Soundarya in 1990s. She has dubbed in Kannada and Malayalam movies too.

Vivek (actor) Indian actor

Vivekanandan, known by his stage name Vivek, is an Indian film actor, comedian, television personality, playback singer and activist working in the Tamil film industry.

Penmetsa Subbaraju is an Indian actor who has acted in many Tollywood films in a variety of roles, from negative to supporting characters. His most notable works include Amma Nanna O' Tamil Ammayi, Arya,Pokiri, Leader, Mirchi, Baahubali 2: The Conclusion, and Geetha Govindam.

Production

After the success of Jayam (2003), Raja decided to remake successful Telugu film Amma Nanna O Tamil Ammayi (2003) with his brother Ravi in lead role. Asin, who appeared in the Telugu version made her debut in Tamil cinema with this film. Nadhiya made her acting comeback with this film portraying Ravi's mother as Raja felt that he wanted to portray her as a modern mother as opposed to the usual portrayal of mothers and she was the right choice for the role. [3] [4] The film was originally titled M. Kumaran S/O Bhagyalakshmi before reverting to original title. [5] The film was extensively shot in Malaysia.

Soundtrack

The songs and background score was done by Srikanth Deva. [6] The song "Ayyo Ayyo" is based on the Malaysian song "Hati Kama", composed by Pak Ngah. [7]

Srikanth Deva is a music director of Tamil films. He made his debut as music director in the Tamil movie Doubles in 2000. He is the son of Tamil music director Deva.

Critical reception

The film received generally positive reviews with Indiaglitz.com saying "If you like films with sentiments, M Kumaran...is for you". [9] Behindwoods.com stated that "Raja has done well for his second film" and "he has well defined the relationship between a mother and a son in this movie", while The Hindu wrote that "casting is a main draw", praising the inclusion of Nadhiya. [10] [11] Rediff.com also listed the film amongst the "best Tamil films of 2004", stating that the film was "a big success". [12]

The film went on to become a commercial success and a major leap in Jayam Ravi's career. [13]

Box-office

The film collected share of 54 lakh in 40 days in Chennai [14] and 5 crore throughout Tamil Nadu selling 3 million tickets.

Mohan Raja Indian film director

Mohan Raja is an Indian film director and a story writer who has primarily worked in the Tamil film industry. After making his debut with the Telugu movie Hanuman Junction (2001), he went on to remake several successful Telugu movies into Tamil, beginning with Jayam (2003) which also launched his brother Ravi as a leading actor. Raja then collaborated with Ravi for three consecutive commercially successful movies, M. Kumaran S/O Mahalakshmi (2004), Something Something...
