MA Hamid (died 25 July 2008) [1] was a Bangladeshi sports organiser and a Bangladesh Army lieutenant colonel. He was the founder of the Bangladesh Handball Federation, the president of the Army Sports Control Board and the vice chairman of the National Sports Council. [1] He was the recipient of Bangladesh National Sports Award (2006) in the organiser category. [2]

Career

In 1975, Hamid served as the station commander of Dhaka Cantonment. [3]

Hamid wrote a book "Three Army Coups and Some Untold Tales". [3]

Personal life

Hamid's wife, Rani Hamid, is a Woman International Master. [1] Their eldest son, Kaiser Hamid, was the captain of the Bangladesh national football team for several years, the second son, Sohel Hamid, was a national squash champion and the youngest son, Bobby Hamid, was a football player. [1]

The Bangladesh national football team is the national recognised football team of Bangladesh and is controlled by the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF). It is a member of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) since 1973 and of FIFA since 1974, even though the Bangladesh Football Federation was first founded in 1972. Bangladesh was elected as a member of the AFC Executive Committee in 1982–1986 and 1998–2002. Hamidur Rahman, BS was a sepoy in Bangladesh Army during the Bangladesh Liberation War. Rahman was killed on 28 October 1971 at Dholoi during the Battle of Dhalai, Srimangal during an attempt to capture the Pakistani Army's position. The advancing Mukti Bahini column finally captured the Dhalai Border Outpost on 3 November 1971. He was posthumously awarded the Bir Sreshtho, the highest recognition of bravery in Bangladesh. The Dhalai post was eventually captured permanently by three infantry battalions belonging to 61 Mountain Brigade, one battalion belonging to East Bengal Regiment and 7 Rajputana Rifles supported by an artillery brigade of the Indian Army fought against 12 Frontier Force Regiment of the Pakistan Army.

Rani Hamid is a Bangladeshi chess player. She became the country's first Woman International Master in 1985. She has been the national champion 20 times, most recently at the 38th Women National Championship at the age of 75. She won her 20th National Women's Chess Championship title in September 2019. She is also a three-time winner of the British Women's Chess Championship. She became Zonal Champion in 2018, received the Journalists Choice Award in the Chess World Cup 2018 in Russia, and won the gold medal in Commonwealth Chess 2017 in Delhi.

He also represented Bangladesh at the national level. In 2003, he received Bangladesh's National Sports Award.
