MakerSquare was a provider of software engineering bootcamp based in Austin, TX, with additional campus locations in San Francisco, CA, Los Angeles, CA and New York, NY. MakerSquare provided a career-focused program that includes job training and employer outreach within its curriculum. [1] In January 2015, MakerSquare was purchased by software engineering bootcamp Hack Reactor, [2] and in 2016, all MakerSquare campuses were rebranded to share the Hack Reactor name. [3]

History

MakerSquare was founded in 2013 by Harsh Patel, Shaan Shah, Shehzan Devani, and Ravi Parikh. [4] [5] The four created the company with no investor funding and initially operated from Parikh's parent's home. [6] [7] [8] MakerSquare was acquired by Hack Reactor in January 2015 for an undisclosed amount. Since the acquisition, MakerSquare has adopted the Hack Reactor curriculum, course structure and name. [2]

Locations

MakerSquare was originally located on Congress Avenue in downtown Austin, TX; however, it was since relocated to the offices of Capital Factory, within the Omni Hotel, still in downtown Austin. [1] MakerSquare opened a second campus in SoMa in San Francisco, CA in 2014 and subsequently two more campuses in Los Angeles (2015) and New York City (2016). [9] [3]

Programs

MakerSquare has adopted the Hack Reactor program which is a course where students spend 12-weeks learning software engineering for 60 to 80 hours a week. [6] [10] Cohorts usually consist of 15 to 30 students with a low student-to-teacher ratio. [11] Students are expected to have an intermediate level understanding of JavaScript before entering. Following completion of the course, MakerSquare students are assisted in their job search by the MakerSquare Student Outcomes team, and connected to their hiring network of 300+ employers. [12] The Student Outcomes staff also provide support for resume preparation, technical interview readiness, personal branding, online presence management, and personal portfolio creation. Immersive courses start every seven weeks. [1] Currently, MakerSquare has achieved a 96% placement rate. Graduate salaries average $106,000 in San Francisco, $92,000 in Los Angeles, and $75,000 in Austin with a 96% success rate of graduates who were placed in a full-time programming job within 3 months of graduation. MakerSquare offered a part-time course which allowed students to focus on a particular division of web development. [13] MakerSquare's part-time courses were geared towards professionals seeking not to become developers, but to understand more technical aspects of their career. [14] As of November 2014, these classes have been discontinued and have been replaced with MakerPrep, a part-time evenings class for aspiring programmers. [15] [16]

MakerSquare offered a K-12 web development program called Hatch After School in which younger students attend a weekly session to learn programming basics. Consisting of mostly middle school students, Hatch After School consists of three 8-week phase. [17] [18] As of 2015, Hatch After School has been retired.

Student intake and outreach initiatives

The MakerSquare application process includes an online application and technical interview. [19] Accepted students are assigned approximately 75 hours of pre-work that is due prior to the start of their cohort. [20] Currently, MakerSquare has an 18% selectivity rate. [11] The typical MakerSquare student is a college graduate with 4 to 5 years of experience in finance or marketing. [21]

MakerSquare has created a partnership with 3 Day Startup to offer a scholarship to a 3 Day Startup Alumni. [22] It has also created financial partnerships with Climb Credit and WeFinance to assist students with paying tuition, [23] and is partnered with Thinkful to help students achieve the level of technical proficiency required to pass MakerSquare's technical interview for admission. Dev Bootcamp was an immersive 19-week coding bootcamp founded by Shereef Bishay, Jesse Farmer, and Dave Hoover in February 2012. It is designed to make graduates job-ready by the end of the program. Dev Bootcamp was headquartered in San Francisco, California, with additional locations in Seattle, Chicago, New York City, Washington DC, San Diego, and Austin. It was acquired by for-profit education company Kaplan, Inc in 2014. Dev Bootcamp closed in 2017. The Dev Bootcamp domain was acquired by Noble Desktop in 2019.

Pluralsight, LLC is an American privately held online education company that offers a variety of video training courses for software developers, IT administrators, and creative professionals through its website. Founded in 2004 by Aaron Skonnard, Keith Brown, Fritz Onion, and Bill Williams, the company has its headquarters in Farmington, Utah. As of July 2018, it uses more than 1,400 subject-matter experts as authors, and offers more than 7,000 courses in its catalog. Since first moving its courses online in 2007, the company has expanded, developing a full enterprise platform, and adding skills assessment modules.

Lighthouse Labs is a tech education company that offers 12-week boot camps for web development and data science, as well as part-time up-skilling courses, with locations across Canada. In previous years, they organized an annual free learn-to-code event, The HTML500, in partnership with Telus.

Hack Reactor is a software engineering coding bootcamp education program founded in San Francisco in 2012. The program is remote-only and offered in 12-week full-time, 19-week full-time, and 38-week part-time formats.

Fullstack Academy is an immersive software engineering coding bootcamp located in New York City. Students of the full-time flagship course learn full stack JavaScript over the course of a 13-week, on-campus program. Fullstack Academy offers beginner courses in JavaScript and front-end development, as well as a summer program for college-age students, and a part-time version of their full-time curriculum (Flex).

HackerEarth is an Indian software company headquartered in San Francisco, US, that provides enterprise software that assists organizations with technical hiring. HackerEarth is used by organizations for technical skill assessments and remote video interviewing. In addition, HackerEarth also has built a community of over 4 million developers. In the community, HackerEarth has conducted over 1,000 hackathons and 10,000 programming challenges to date. HackerEarth has raised $11.5 million in funding over three rounds. Currently, more than 750 customers worldwide use its technical coding assessments platform, including Amazon, Walmart Labs, Thoughtworks, Societe Generale, HP, VMware, DBS, HCL, GE, Wipro, Barclays, Pitney Bowes, Intel, and L&T Infotech. HackerEarth is backed by GSF Global and Angelprime.

Coding bootcamps are intensive programs of software development. They first appeared in 2011.

WeFinance is a technology-enabled platform headquartered in San Francisco, which connects lenders with borrowers. The platform allows borrowers to pick their own interest rate, length, and other terms. Typical loans are non-restrictive and can be used for educational expenses, tuition refinancing, coding bootcamps, or moving.

Michelle Sun is a Chinese entrepreneur from Hong Kong. She founded First Code Academy, a K-12 coding school headquartered in Hong Kong which taught children 4 and up how to code and create mobile applications. The academy had presence in 6 different cities in Asia, including Hong Kong, Singapore, Taipei, Shanghai and Shenzhen. Teaching was given either in their school classrooms or in the firm's own offices.

Flatiron School is an educational organization founded in 2012 by Adam Enbar and Avi Flombaum. The organization is based in New York City and teaches software engineering, computer programming, data science, product design, and cybersecurity engineering. In 2017, the company was sued for making false statements about the earning potential of its graduates. It was acquired by WeWork in 2017 and sold to Carrick Capital Partners in 2020.

Bloom Institute of Technology, also known as BloomTech, is a for-profit massive online course. When it launched in 2017 under the name Lambda School, it gained attention for being a coding bootcamp that offered income share agreements as a method of financing. Following several layoffs and cost cutting measures, it transitioned from a bootcamp model to MOOC, and refocused on traditional student loans. It currently faces several lawsuits for deceptive marketing, allegedly lying about how many students find jobs, among other issues.
