Sudheer Kumar (born 20 April 1955), better known by his stage name Maniyanpilla Raju (Malayalam:മണിയൻപിള്ള രാജു), is an Indian actor and producer who works in Malayalam film industry. [4] [5] His debut film was Mohiniyaattam in 1976. He has played a variety of roles as a character actor, appearing in over 400 films. [6] His stage name was derived from the character he played in the film Maniyanpilla Adhava Maniyanpilla (1981), his break-through role. [7]

Early life

Raju was born as the youngest among four in 1955 to Shekharan Nair and Saraswati Amma at Thycaud, Trivandrum. He has two sisters, Ramani and Radha, and a brother Surendran. [8] He had his primary education from Government Model Boys Higher Secondary School, Trivandrum. He did his pre-degree in Victory Tutorial College. [2] He learned diploma in acting course during 1973–1975 from Adyar Film Institute, Madras (now Chennai). [9]

Personal life

Maniyanpilla Raju married Indira in 1985, and the couple blessed with two sons, elder one is Sachin. Younger son Niranj made his debut in Renjith's Black Butterfly . [10] He wrote a book titled Chirichum Chirippichum containing his memoirs in 2012. In 2019, he opened a restaurant Be @ Kiwizo in Kannur, which has Kerala's first robot servants. [11]

His son Manu Varma is also an artist and his son-in-law Viji Thampi is a film director. Nandalal Krishnamoorthy better known by his stage name Nandu is an Indian actor primarily working in Malayalam films. Although he has been in the industry for more than 30 years, he is acclaimed for his performance in Mohanlal' s Spirit, directed by Ranjith. He was also seen in many Priyadarsan films. He received SIIMA award for best supporting actor, for the movie Spirit.

Santhakumari is an Indian actress best known for her work in Malayalam cinema. She has acted in more than 250 films and short films like 'Nerariyathe' which is critically acclaimed.

Maniyan Pilla Adhava Maniyan Pilla is a 1981 Indian Malayalam-language comedy film written, directed and scripted by Balachandra Menon. The film stars Sudheer Kumar, Venu Nagavally, Jose Prakash and Ambika. The film revolves around Maniyanpilla, an illiterate man from a poor household, who goes to the city to make a living. The film was produced and distributed by E. J. Peter under the banner of St. Martin Films. The producer had signed Kamal Haasan for the film as the lead actor, but due to circumstances, Menon replaced Haasan with his real life friend Sudheer Kumar as the lead actor. The film has a musical score by G. Devarajan. The cinematography was handled by Ramachandra Babu. The film was release on 1 May 1981 and was a commercial success and was a breakthrough for Sudheer Kumar, who adopted the hypocorism Maniyanpilla Raju after the success of the film.
