Maradu (Malayalam pronunciation: [mɐɾɐɖɨ̆] ) is a municipality [2] in the Ernakulam district of Kerala, India. Maradu is an inner suburb of the Kochi metropolitan area and is located 6 km (3.7 mi) south of the Kochi city centre. As per the 2011 Indian census, Maradu has a population of 44,704 people.
On 8 May 2019, the Supreme Court of India ordered five apartments in Maradu to be demolished within one month, for violation of Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) rules, although only four of these apartments had yet been constructed. The incident received widespread media attention, and generated controversy across Kerala for the alleged corruption in the local government sector. [3] [4]
Maradu was formed in May 1953 as a Grama Panchayath and was upgraded to the level of municipality in November 2010.
Maradu is built on various low-lying river islands at the mouth of the Vembanad Lake [5]

As per the 2011 Indian census, Maradu has a total population of 44,704 and a population density of 3,620 inhabitants per square kilometre (9,400/sq mi). Of this, 49.6% are male and 50.4% are female. 8.01% of the population is under 6 years of age. Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes constitute 17.28% and 0.40% of the population respectively. The total literacy rate was 97.2% (98.3% for males and 96.04% for females), which is higher than the state average of 94% and the national average of 74.04%.
According to the 2011 census, Hindus are the plurality with 49% of the population adhering to the religion. Christians form a significant minority, constituting 36% of the population. Muslims constitute 15% of the population. [8]

The annual Thalappoli festival, also known as the Maradu Vedikkettu, is held in the Maradu Kottaram Bhagavathy Temple every year, in the month of Kumbham in the Malayalam calendar. Though the festival lasts for 8-9 days, it is famous for its large fireworks displays in the last 2 days. [10] However, in 2024, the Kerala High Court denied permission for the fireworks displays, citing safety concerns and lack of proper licensing. [11] [12]
The Maradu Subramanya Swami Temple holds an annual festival in the month of Makaram in the Malayalam calendar during Thaipooyam. The festival is also famous for its Kavadi Aattam in honour of the deity Murugan. [13]
The death anniversary of Fr. George Vakayil (also known as Vakayilachan) is observed every year on 4 November in the St. Mary Magdalene Roman Catholic Church by thousands of devotees. [14] In 2013, he was declared a Servant of God by the Archbishop of Verapoly in the church. [15]
Three National highways pass through Maradu (NH 66, NH 85, NH 966 B). Presence of the National Highways and its assimilation into Kochi city brought the area under the radar of investors and is now one of the fastest-growing areas in Kochi. Maradu also houses two 5 star hotels in addition to several other 2 and 3 start hotels. Several other high-rise buildings and malls are also coming up alongside the highway stretch. Capital Forum Mall of Prestige Group is under construction on Kochi Bypass near Kannadikadu.
NH 66(kochi bypass/Panavel kochi Kanyakumari highway),NH 85(Kochi Madurai highway) and NH 966 B (Kundanoor Willingdon highway) intersects at Kundannoor Junction. There is also an underpass in Kundanooor. A new 6 lane flyover has also been opened recently at the busy junction.
Since the current Kochi Bypass carries over twice the traffic it is designed to handle, the National Highways Authority of India had come up with a proposal for a new bypass for Kochi city a few years ago. As per the selected alignment, the Kochi New Bypass will begin from NH 544 at Karayamparambu, north of Kochi's suburb Angamaly, and end at NH 66 at Nettoor region of Maradu.
In addition to this new greenfield National Highway project, the existing NH 85 (Kochi-Dhanushkodi) starting from Kundannoor junction will be widened to a four lane one under Bharatmala. As per the plans the new widened NH will avoid the current NH 85 as far as Puthenkurishu, starting around 1 kilometre south of the existing Kundanoor Junction. [16]
Maradu municipality oversees the development and administration of Maradu region. Maradu municipal office is in Kundanoor on KRL road.
Maradu is also a part of the region which comes under the Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA).
Muvattupuzha is a municipality in the Ernakulam district of Kerala, India. It is located 26 km (16.2 mi) east of the district headquarters in Thrikkakara and about 170 km (105.6 mi) north of the state capital Thiruvananthapuram. As per the 2011 Indian census, Muvattupuzha has a population of 30,397 people, and a population density of 2,306/km2 (5,970/sq mi).

It is located 18 km (11.2 mi) north of the district collectorate in Thrikkakara and about 187 km (116.2 mi) north of the state capital Thiruvananthapuram. The Hill Palace situated in Thripunithura was the palace of Maharaja of Cochin, the ruler of Kingdom of Cochin. Thrippunithura is known for its rich culture which includes the annual Vrishchikotsavam festival that takes place at the Sree Poornathrayeesa Temple.

Nettoor is a region in the city of Kochi. It is around 5 km (3.1 mi) from Vytilla Junction and around 8 km (5.0 mi) from Ernakulam Junction Railway Station. Nettoor is located on Panangad Island and is a part of Maradu Municipality.
The Kochi Bypass is a segment of National Highway 66 that bypasses the CBD of the city of Kochi in Kerala, India. The highway stretches 17 km from Edapally in the Ernakulam district to Aroor in Alappuzha district, via Palarivattom, Vyttila, Kundannoor, Madavana and Kumbalam. The Government of Kerala began the preliminary works in 1973. After a slow progress, it was partially opened for traffic in the beginning years of the 1980s. The section between Edapally and Vyttila had four lanes from the beginning. The rest of the carriageway was also upgraded to different sections of 4 lane, 5 lane and 6 lanes by 2010.
Kundannoor is a region in the city of Kochi, in the state of Kerala, India. It is located around 3.5 km from Vytilla Junction and around 7 km from Ernakulam Junction Railway Station. Kundanoor is located on the busiest road of the city and state, the Kochi Bypass, at the junction of three National Highways, namely NH 66, NH 85 and NH 966B. NH 966B is the second shortest National highway in India.
The Angamaly-Kundannoor Bypass, also known as Ernakulam Bypass is a proposed partially-controlled-greenfield corridor or highway in the Ernakulam district, Kerala, India. The highway will pass through sparsely populated areas avoiding Kochi city completely and is expected to reduce the traffic on the NH 544 and NH 66. It will begin at Karayamparambu on the northern side of Angamaly on NH 544 and end at south of the NH 66 at Kundannoor.
The Kochi–Theni Greenfield Highway is a 151 kilometre-long planned greenfield controlled-access highway in India, connecting Kochi in Kerala with Theni in Tamil Nadu. The new six lane highway is part of the Kochi - Tuticorin economic corridor which aims at connecting these two major ports enabling smooth movement of cargo between the two. The highway, which will pass through the Western Ghats of Idukki district, will begin from Kundannoor in Kochi and reach Theni almost 67 kilometres lesser than the existing NH 85 alignment and is expected to decongest the 121-km Kochi–Munnar NH 85 stretch.
